Christmas in July Blog Hop Day SEVEN!

Today is the seventh day of the Christmas in July Blog Hop and it’s finally my turn to give you some holiday inspiration!

Christmas in July button 150If you’re new to my blog, welcome!  I’m Julie, The Crafty Quilter, and I love sharing my creativity with you here at my blog.  I live in Northern California with my family, and I teach quilting classes and work in a quilt shop (so I practically dream in quilt colors)!  This year, I made a promise to myself that I would get ready for Christmas all year long.  I have been working on one holiday project every month and you can find all of my previous Christmas projects here.

I coordinated this blog hop so that I could share even more holiday inspiration with you from some of my favorite blogging friends.  So far, they have brought you a Christmas Tree Topiary Pillow, JOY and Gingerbread Bunting, a Christmas Door Banner, a Winter Wonderland Table Topper, a Christmas Tree Skirt, and a Christmas Windows Wall Hanging.

And now I am adding a Christmas Holly Table Runner to the mix.  You’ll find the tutorial in a pdf file towards the end of this post.

Christmas Table Runner

I have been so excited about sharing my project with you for this Blog Hop!  I made a cute and simple Christmas table runner using easy patchwork, a little applique and some jumbo ric rak to add some punch.

Christmas table runner tutorial

Another little detail that makes this table runner so fun is the thread that I used for the quilting.  This is a metallic thread called Sliver by Sulky and it adds a touch of sparkle to your stitches.  I’m so glad I thought to use it here!  I did all of my straight line quilting with it and I outlined my applique shapes with it also.  The free motion quilting was done with white cotton thread.

I really enjoyed making this little project and it’s so nice to make something quick and easy!  But if you’re thinking, “Oh no!  It’s got applique…”, I’m giving you an alternative that leaves the applique out.  I wouldn’t want anything to prohibit you from making this table runner!

patriotic runner_edited-1

I made this same runner in a patriotic version without the applique.  I just added another border to the end and an extra row of jumbo ric rak.  I think it’s still as cute as ever.  I’m telling you, though, it was painful for me to not add stars in the border!

The Christmas version uses one mini-charm pack of Moda Candy in Aspen Frost and some white background fabric.  The patriotic version was made using some of my scraps (it didn’t make much of a dent).  The finished size is 12 1/2″ x 28 1/2″.  It fits perfectly on my entry table, but it could be made larger to fit any size table.

My tutorial can be found here:  Christmas Holly Table Runner.  This is a separate pdf file that I made for you so that’s it’s easy to save and print out for future reference.  I  hope you enjoy it, and please let me know if you have any questions!

Now that you’ve made it this far, I have a giveaway to offer you!  (UPDATE:  This giveaway is now closed).  Actually TWO, because I can’t stand picking just one winner!   First, I have one kit that includes everything you need to make my Christmas Holly Table Runner:  One Moda mini-charm pack of Aspen Frost, all other fabrics required (including backing & binding), jumbo ric rak, Sliver metallic thread, and a printed copy of the instructions!

All you need to do is leave a comment on THIS post telling me what your favorite hand made gift would be (to give or receive) this Christmas (pretend that I’m Santa).  UPDATE:  Giveaway has ended.

They gave them to us for my husband to wear around the farm but they are all 100% cotton and quite a few nice plaids, etc so I couldn’t just let him get them greasy. I will probably have to make something for my husband because he gave up the shirts. I think anything handmade that has the recipient in mind is a wonderful gift.

  48. I loved your table runner. I have used the jumbo rick rack and like it very much. I made a plastic template from the rick rack and use it to cut out rick rack from fabric. A little 505 spray holds it in place while I stitch down both sides and when I wash the item, it chenilles to give a very cute fluffy look. Thanks for posting the Christmas ideas.
My favorite Christmas gift is more fun thread to embellish my quilts.

  49. The best Christmas gift that I could receive would be anything made by my husband. He is a very talented artist-he is a concept artist, graphic designer and he also makes stained glass, pencil sketches & paintings. He designs leather wrist bands and guitar straps. There are so many more venues in art that he is accomplished in. My most favorite drawing is the pencil sketch he did of a photo that was taken of us when we started dating.

Christmas-time will be a bit hectic this year as my daughter is getting married on the 14th and I’m gonna be busy with all the myriad details as well as making two flower girl dresses and the ring bearer pillow. To try to save what’s left of my sanity, I took your one-a-month approach this year. I’ve made casserole carriers with matching potholders for the womenfolk and lounge pads (using bed pillows) for the 7 kidlets. The guys are getting gift baskets tailored for their interests (popcorn fixings, ice cream social, etc.
Me? I’d be more than pleased with my daughter happy, my husband happy and maybe a gift card from some place fabric-related.

I like to make an ornament for each of my children reflecting something important in their year – the ornaments can be quilted, needlepointed, embroidered or beaded. I like anything handmade.

  99. First of all, I want to thank you for sharing these wonderful ideals with us. I love making small projects and giving them as little tokens of love to family and friends at Christmas or other special days. Thanks again, I have enjoyed following you this week.

  100. My favorite giftt to give for Christmas is flannel rag quilts. I have made one as a gift for just about everyone in my family. Just a few more to go.

  101. Thank you for all the wonderful projects – love them all. I am looking forward to making each of the children in my Kindergarten class a Santa ornament this year. I love the look on their faces at Christmas when we make things in class, too. Thanks for the chance to win!

  102. Cute table-runner, love both versions! I love giving quilts, lap, baby, or bed-size as gifts. hmmm, what would I like to receive? A quilt that someone else made!! LOL Thanks for the chance for the give-away!

  103. Santa – Thank you for the wonderful hop. I had a great time with all the great tutorials. I love the sparkly thread. Your table runner is dynamite in both versions. I think a quilt in any size is a hit to give. My daughter thought she had given away all her t-shirts from her college sorority. The kids kid me about keeping everything. When she was home a few years ago, she found a large box of them in a closet. She has asked me to make her a t-shirt quilt. So, I would love to get her t-shirt quilt done for her for Christmas. She is not a saver of things but dropped a hint that she is starting to save shirts of her two sons. Again, Julie thank you and the great team you assembled to give us great ideas for Christmas. I can hardly wait to put them to good use.

  104. Thank you Julie for the great tutorial. I have linked it in the web site of our Swedish National Quilt Guild to share to our members and other visitors on our site.
I think that Christmas mug rugs are so wonderful to make and to receive, that they will be the best handmade Christmas gifts for this year.
And thanks again for the Christmas blog hop, I have enjoyed it very much.

  105. Hi Julie, you haven’t disappointed us! Such a jolly Christmas project for a mini charm pack, and the jumbo ric rac looks great on it. Thanks for sharing your excellent tutorial, and for the time you have spent organizing this fun blog hop! We’ll all expect you to do it again of course!
My favourite Santa gift to make and give is from a pattern I found on my travels for a teabag holder. It’s a pocket divided up to hold your favourite teas. It folds together and fastens with a magnet. Great to pop in your bag on trips or to have at work etc. I give it with a selection of teas in it of course!
    Greetings from Scotland!

  106. I love to make small Make Up Purses for Christmas. A girl can never get enough of those 😉 I am happy for all the gifts I recieve but anything homemade is the best 🙂

  107. I would enjoy making the Christmas Holly Table Runner for several family members along with matching Pocket Pot Holders.
Thank you for the Christmas in July inspirations!

  108. Not quite a craft, or maybe it is, since it’s cooking.

I hate to make the dumb turkey, so my best gift would be for some other member of my family to cook the dang thing. And carve it. And clean up after – oops, maybe I’m getting carried away now.

Really – just somebody else cook the bird.

  109. Since I do the Christmas dinner I make a quilted tablecloth every year. This is my gift to whomever shares my holiday dinner at the end of the dinner there has been either a chair marked or under a plate or somewhere that someone is sitting at that says “Merry Christmas from my family to yours” and they get to take that Christmas table cloth home. We all sign the back of it and it is theirs to do as they wish. I can tell you I have been doing it for over 10 years and I have anywhere from 12 to 21 people every year and it is something that they all look forward to a well as my dh and I look forward to giving it. Happy Holidays and thank you for a lovely pattern and give a way.

  110. Giving gift- I love creating with fabric–to me it could be quilt, clothing etc. Receiving- OK—-love receiving fabric or any trinket that goes in the fiber world.

  111. This has been a fun blog hop! Thank you so much for hosting it!
My favorite gift to give would be a new purse for my mother-in-law. She loved the last purse I made for her & has about worn it out!
