W.i.P. August 28

Here is a quick look at my W.i.P’s for this final week of August.

I finished my third block from the Fat Quarter Shop’s 2013 Designer Mystery BOM.  I just LOVE this basket block!

I have a few tips if you’re making this one:  Over-size the quarter-square triangle blocks (hour glass blocks)and then trim them down to the exact size.  I did this by cutting all of the original squares at 3 1/2″ instead of 3 1/4″.  Also, don’t cut the squares into quarters, but leave them whole.  Draw a diagonal line on each light square and put them right sides together with the coral squares.  Stitch on each side of the line.

qst step 1Cut in half and press towards the coral fabric.  You will end up with this:

qst step 2

Join the two opposite halves together and draw another diagonal line.  Because you only need a total of 6 units, you won’t be using all of the pieces.  This is what mine looked like after laying them out:

Finally, you trim them down to 2 1/2″ units.

qst last stepsAnother tip that I have for you comes from Cathy, one of the customers at The Granary.  She uses office label dots to distinguish the right and wrong sides of the cream fabric.  As you’re cutting your fabric, place a dot on the right (or wrong, just be consistent) side of the fabric.  It’s barely noticeable, but there is a difference – just ask me how I know!

label dotsI am going to be teaching a new curved piecing technique using the Quick Curve Ruler from Sew Kind of Wonderful.  I wanted some more practice, so I’m making a table runner for my daughter using the ruler, (which I’m really loving!).

qcr projectAnd I’m picking fabric for a new project!  Like I need a new project to work on, but you know that little voice inside that says, “sure, what’s the harm?”  I’m taking an online class called The Penny Sampler, from Rachel at Stitched in Color.  There is still time to join, if you’re interested (there’s that voice again!).  Here’s the color palette I’ll be working with:

I made a pillow already as one of the projects for this class, but I forgot to take a picture.  It’s really cute, trust me.

  1. Love that block and what great tips! I agree with all the cutting suggestions and appreciate the visuals! : D thanks!! I hear the little voice but I haven’t even started last years BOM!

  2. I’m in love with that basket block at the top of your post!
I can see why you are too. Is the whole quilt made of baskets? It’s wonderful. You’re the second person to take that class from Rachel–hope you enjoy it. And yes, lovely palette of fabrics there; I’m sure you’ll enjoy working with them.

I laughed when I read your comments about how you are starting another project and can’t believe it. Yep–I’m the same way. I have an idea for a quilt pinned up on the wall, as I’m sewing two skirts and thinking about what I’m supposed to do for my Bee Blocks next month. Too much swirling around in my brain!

I enjoyed reading your blog–thanks for the tips on the hourglass blocks!

  3. I made my 3rd block of the Designer BOM, had it done and realized I too had a little piece of the cream color wrong side out. I like your tip for knowing which side is the right side. Im finding that each block I make becomes a little easier to do. Ive only been quilting for just about a year. Took a beginners quilting class with a friend because she want to, but she didnt want to go alone. So I went kicking and screaming, saying Im not going to like it….. But look at me now, Im completely addicted!!

  4. Beautiful block, Julie. I adore the Avalon line and look at your perfectly matched points!! I imagine that is due to your wonderful tip – I like to make block sections too big and trim them down, too. It sure helps everything line up when they are the exact same size!!!
