A Little Pillow Talk

I have a two little pillows to show you today.  I made these in a few hours (each) and they really brighten up my new leather couch!

pillows stacked copyThe first pillow was made as part of an online class, The Penny Sampler, at Stitched in Color.

We used a turned edge applique technique with sketch stitching.  This means that I straight stitched around the edges several times without trying to be perfect.  That’s a new (and very freeing) way to stitch for me!

dogwood applique detailI started with a quilted (by me) base fabric made out of Essex Linen and I love the texture!

Pillow stripes copyThe quilting is simple too.  I stitched 1/4″ from each horizontal seam.

I didn’t take any pictures of the pillow construction since I wasn’t planning on doing a tutorial.  But I know you’re going to ask.  It’s a 16″ pillow and I used strips that were 2 1/4″ wide x 12 3/4″ long for the jewel-tones and 2 3/8″ wide strips for the linen.  I bordered it with rectangles that were 2 3/8″ wide also.  The small squares are 2 1/4″.  That’s the long and the very short of it!

I hope you all enjoy your day!

  1. These are super cool pillows! How was the quilter’s linen to work with? I have to fuse stabilizer to the back sometimes, so I can cut it. Otherwise, it changes shape and size, I swear! Did you have any issues with it? I’d love to try this kind, if it behaves…the colors are really nice with the brighter fabrics.

  2. These pillows are really pretty, and I love the look of the sketch stitching! and you’re right, the linen with the brights is simply gorgeous!

Thank you so much for sharing this at Needle and Thread Thursday!
