BOM progress & some retail therapy

I have a few BOM’s (block of the month) going on that I want to show you.  The first is my February blocks from The Quilt Show‘s BOM, A to Z for Ewe and Me.  The letters for this month are B (for Basket), C (for Colorado Beauty) and D (for Duck & Ducklings).

I am making two versions of this quilt.  One is with fabrics from my stash and it includes brighter colors on low volume backgrounds.  It’s going to be a bit “scrappy”.  Here’s my bright and scrappy version:

The other version is from the kit that is offered at the TQS website.  I am working with these fabrics as I make up the examples for the online video tutorials that I do for the website.  I like them both!  Here is the original version using the kit fabrics:

You can really see the blanket stitching in the letter “D” above.  I’m using a new thread from Superior Threads called Magnifico.  I LOVE it!  It’s a high-sheen, 40 wt. polyester thread that really shows off your applique.  Now I have something else I need to collect!

I also finished the February block of the Classic Meets Modern QAL at Sew at Home Mummy.  This one was a bit of a challenge with set in seams and templates, but it was good to try something new and different.

Modern Block Feb

I’m happy with the colors I picked. It all started with the center square of fabric, which is extremely cute!  So, pink and gray it is!

Speaking of fabric, I did a little retail therapy last week at The Intrepid Thread (a great online store and local quilt shop) and look at what I found!  I love these corals, grays and low volume prints together:

orange and low vol copyWhat is low volume?  It’s a light colored (white, gray, cream, or tan) fabric with small print that can be used as a background fabric.  The print can be text, small florals, or geometric and it’s subtle enough that it reads as a soft solid.  You can see it used in my bright and scrappy version of the TQS blocks.

Next, are some Riley Blake fabrics that I’ve had my eye on (the top two pieces):

red white and pink copyAnd these turquoise prints (mostly Sphere by Zen Chic for Moda) I couldn’t live without:

teals copyHave you heard of Mochi Dots from Moda?  They are linen and cotton, and I think they would make a perfect bag.  The top fabric is all cotton – In My Room from Free Spirit.

mochi dots copyAnd a few charm packs never hurt anybody:

charms packs copyI love this Mousey Mouse from Andover Fabrics.  The three blind mice and the mouse on the bike are just too cute!

mice and bikes copySome sweet Moda Candy (it was Valentine’s Day after all!):

moda candy copyAnd from my favorite LQS (local quilt shop), The Granary, I found polka dots (mostly from Nancy Halvorsen’s new line, This ‘n That from Benartex:

polka dots copyThese next dots are fun and a little different.  They are Dot’s Right! from Marcus Fabrics:

miller dots copyand a little bit of Kate Spain’s new fabric for Moda, Daydream:

martinis copyOh, how I love fabric!  I absolutely have to live until I’m 100 so I can make a dent in my stash!  Does this make you feel envious or grateful that you’re not alone? Or possibly you’re thinking that I need real therapy and not retail therapy!

Have a great day!

  1. Julie,
I really enjoy following your blog and I’m so jealous of the fabric that you just purchased! Great choices and I also love your BOM’s!! Keep up the good work!! Happy quilting.
    Dawn : )

  2. You certainly did some stash building:) Love that color me happy and sphere. That thread looks perfect on your applique too! I havent tried any 40wt….like you said, all I need is another thing to collect:)

  3. For a few months I can buy online in my country, but the fabrics are not so diversified. I love the range Mochi Dots from Moda with In My Room from Free Spirit. Hope someday I’ll sew something like this.
I like th block of the month, again, your fabric choice is briliant!

  4. Great photos of these mouthwatering fabrics and projects! I came back to see them a second time this evening, when I had more time to spend drooling over them! I think the Good Lord knows that we quilters need lots of sewing time, and that’s why you see lots of older ladies who quilt.

  5. Love the fabrics, and I totally have the same problem with fabric, I can say that I need to live well into my 100’s to use up my stash and make all the projects that I want to make. The BOM’s are really nice too, love the “D” you did with the Magnifico Thread.

  6. I’m so glad you showed your new fabrics– it’s great vicarious enjoyment! And it will be good to see some of your projects, blocks, you make with them. I definitely have my own problem with buying and already having too many fabrics though too. I give myself a “gold star” for each day I don’t buy fabric!

  7. Oh what beautiful things you are sharing with us! Your blocks are gorgeous… especially that pink and gray Feb. block with the Y seams.
And I was drooling on my keyboard , while looking over all of your fabrics!!
    You have some real gems!!

  8. I’m doing the TQS BOM too, mine is lots of polka dots (I seem to be addicted to them) and a lot of my solids are Cherrywood fabrics because I love their texture and colors. I’m really trying to improve my precision on the little pieced blocks. I need the practice (and patience). I love your fussy cut star! Thanks for further inspiration. Barb in CA

  9. I noticed in the basket block direction on the BOM pattern it doesn’t mention what size you cut your rust fabrics or any info about the rust fabric other than to cut the squares and place them in the block for sewing. Is it me or did the pattern delete the reference to rust fabric.

  10. You are so lucky to have LQS to visit! I have to do most of my retail therapy online….and it’s just not the same as seeing and touching the fabrics in person! Question….if you don’t have a project in mind when you purchase fabric, what quantity do you generally buy? I have a meager stash because I tend to buy for particular projects. And when I do pre-buy, I end up scrambling to find just another 1/2yard of something I have run short on! ;}

  11. Julie – thanks for this post. I thought I knew all our local quilt shops but I hadn’t heard of The Intrepid Thread. Now I’ll have to go visit.
