A Nordic mini quilt and other stuff

Hello everyone!  I keep being reminded that there are only so many weeks left until Christmas and that means I have lots to do!  Among them is a Nordic mini quilt and some other stuff such as BOM’s and QAL’s.  I’m so good at starting new projects but terrible at finishing them.  I know I’m not the only one (right?).

So, is anyone interested in a Nordic Mini-Quilt Along?  I think the only way I might get this one finished is if I include you all in it!  Here’s what one block looks like:

I love that little star!  And by little, I mean 4 1/4″ finished!  That center red square is 1/4″.  I am enjoying the challenge of working with such a small scale, but the pressing of seams is driving me crazy!  It’s not easy to press 1/2″ of seam allowance into a 1/4″ of space.

I’ve decided to work in a miniature scale, and I am going to make this a row-style quilt. I’ll post the instructions for each row as I go along.  This will be pretty informal, but the plan is to have it finished by December 1.  Are you with me?

Some of the other stuff I’ve been working on is the finishing of El’s Kitchen BOM.  I’ve got one more block to make and then I will put the sashing on.

I couldn’t resist the Sew Sweet Simplicity Block of the Month by Jacquelynne Steves.  I’m using up some old Bonnie & Camille fabric which will be perfect for a little baby girl:

I decided to add my own applique center and I’m going to keep it the same for each block.  I loved making this one!

I also made a quick gift for a baby shower, a portable changing pad.

It has flannel on the inside and a pocket to hold a few diapers and wipes.  It folds up into a cute little clutch.

I used fusible fleece and waterproof lining (Pul) in between the layers.  It fastens shut with a little Velcro.  Super easy to make!

A little bit of bias binding around the edges finishes it off.

I’ve already had a request for a tutorial for this one, so I’ll add that to my list.  For now, I’m working on the Nordic mini quilt.  I’ll be back soon with more on that one.

Have a great day!

Julie

  2. Hi Julie, what a pretty Nordic star in red and white, quite minimalistic as is the Scandinavian style. But How beautifully you have sewn it on such a small scale!

  3. I’ll be migrating during your Nordic adventure, but that doesn’t mean I can’t play catch-up later! Love your El’s Kitchen BOM so far and your sweet Sew Simplicity block. I’m making extras so I can have a larger finished quilt and I like how you used your own applique in the center. Duh!! Why didn’t I think of that for my extra blocks?? Have a great day!

  6. I have always wanted to do a mini quilt. Also I am on block Z in the TQS BOM. I appreciate all your help. Hopefully I will start the borders in January. Will I still have access to your tutorials then? I realize I am behind. Having 3 grandbabies born this year haven’t left much sewing time.

  8. Love the mini quilt block! Love the idea but not sure I can do it. I have a daughter in law that loves nordic so I might be able to put something together for her. Looking forward to your directions…maybe I’ll give it a go.

  9. I love the little mini and would love to make some too! My question is….why do the squares in the center look like half square triangles? And why? I love minis but this would add to the bulk which we sure don’t need!

  10. Oh, how I wish I could join that Nordic mini quilt sew along, but I’m way overbooked between now and December 1. I love what you did with the Jacquelynne Steves block – that applique is the perfect finish and will make the blocks tie together so sweetly. Can’t wait for a changing pad tutorial someday – what a great baby gift!!!

  13. Hi Julie,
I just finished reading your latest post – as usual, I loved everything!! I always come away inspired and excited to try something I’ve seen you do. I especially liked the portable changing pad. My niece just had a baby boy and I would love to make one for her. I think i’ll do a little experimenting to see what I come up with! And if all else fails, I’ll wait and read the instructions!
Thanks for sharing your talents so generously!
