Happy quilting day!

Happy quilting day!  It’s official, today is National Quilting Day!  As if you need an excuse to spend some time quilting this weekend, but maybe there is a little less guilt and a lot more community involved with today.

I will be working on a project that has a March 31st due date, but you’ll have to wait until then to see what it is.

Today I want to share a mini quilt that I recently finished as part of the March Mini Madness going on at the Fat Quarter Shop.  They challenged us to make a mini quilt by the end of March and to post it on social media with the hashtag #fqsmarchminis.  And to top it off, they’re having a giveaway.  One winner will be chosen on March 31st from all who enter.  You have plenty of time to join the fun!

My mini quilt was made using the pattern Mini Shine by A Quilting Life Designs.  I LOVE this quilt!  It makes me happy whenever I look at it.

The fabric came from a fat 1/8 bundle of Mimosa by Another Point of View for Windham Fabrics.  This is a bright and cheery line of fabric inspired by traditional feedsack prints.

It took me two days to make this quilt from start to finish.  I think I could just make mini’s from now on.  It satisfies my need for instant gratification.

The quilting was done using a serpentine stitch on my Bernina 440QE and a walking foot.

I love the texture it adds without much fuss.  No marking the quilt and just straight (ish) lines.

The settings on my machine for stitch #4 (in case we happen to be sewing machine twins) looks like this:

For such a small quilt (17″ square), it’s easy to use one fat quarter for the backing:

And since Spring has sprung (especially in Northern California), I took my quilt outside to be photographed amongst the flowers.

Are you inspired to whip up a little quilt?  I really think you should.  It’s National Quilting Day after all!

  4. Hi Julie,
Just love your mini quilt, great job on all those tiny stars! Thanks for the quilt stitch tip too, I have never thought to use that one, must go and try it. I tend to go for a free motion wave pattern but of course that one will give straighter lines when using the walking foot.
Hope you enjoyed your National Quilting Day
