I had one of those “Wow” moments when I was following Jacquelynne’s instructions for this month’s block.  She has a really cool trick to make the type of units which are located in the corner squares (shown below).  It’s worth signing up for the BOM just to find out how Jacquelynne made this unit super easy and precise.

For the sides of this block, I strip-pieced the center rectangle and the squares together which improved my accuracy (and speed). I used a 3 1/2″ x 9″ rectangle for the center and two 2″ x 9″ rectangles on each side.

The applique turned out really well.  I used a small zig zag stitch to mimic the string of the tea bag.  I also used blue thread to stitch around the tea bag which is a great way to accent a color like yellow that might not have shown up well otherwise.

  1. Hey I love applique and love all forms of it.It depends on my mood which technique I fancy at that moment. But sometimes the amount of fabric I prefer to use for applique determines it cause smaller the piece makes the decision easier on the type of applique. Love all that you do and love this Bom. Thanks for this opportunity.

  2. I like your tea cup. Thank you for the tips on making the block. I’ve dome appliqué by hand, turning 0.25″ under as I went. It makes a tidy edge, but is very slow. I prefer appliqué by machine and usually use blanket stitch, but have used a narrow zig-zag stitch too.

  3. I love the look I get from the freezer paper applique. I enjoy doing hand applique but in a pinch will take it to the machine and finish it up really quick. I love using the different stitches on my machine.
    Your Blocks are so cute!!

  4. I hope to do all three versions of her quilt…I just love it! I usually do needle-turn applique or blanket-stitched machine applique….which is what I’ll use on this quilt.

    1. Thank you for every other informative site. Where else may just I get that type of information written in such an ideal method? I have a project that I’m simply now operating on, and I’ve been on the glance out for such information.

    2. there would be answers in the final episode but you are still left confused. Only answer I got was why the plane crashed but nothing else seemed to make sense and others I have spoken to about it came to the same conclusion.

  5. I’ve done a tiny bit of fusible machine-applique and the envelope style of applique. Have never tried needle-turn applique.

  6. I machine applique most all of my appliques. I would love to do some needle turned, I feel it looks neater but I just don”t have the time, plus I have done a lot machine applique so I’m pretty good at it.

  7. I prefer the look of applique done by hand. However, there are some projects that just do not warrant that amount of effort so I use the fusible web, or the diluted liquid thread, and iron on the applique.

  8. Yes, I do mostly machine applique. I have done needle turn in the past, but life is too short and I want to complete some projects, lol.

  9. Your block is beautiful! Yes I have done applique by hand mostly just a little on the machine so I need more practice on the machine!

  11. I love appliqueing, I usually use fusible web and hand blanket stitch around the shape, but am trying my hand at needle turn, little apprehensive!

  12. I’ve done applique a few times using both the buttonhole stitch and the satin stitch on raw edge applique. I also did a small runner with poinsettia flowers and leaves doing the starch method of hand applique. I probably prefer the machine applique just because it goes faster!

  13. I’ve only done raw edge machine applique before. I’m reluctant to try needle-turn as I’m not much for hand work – it’s not my fave. I did do the ” To the Moon and Back” as a present for my most recent granddaughter. You can see it as my avatar on The QuiltingBoard.com or in their photo gallery.

  14. I love your blocks they are beautiful..I have appliqued before, I love using the satin stitch on my old sewing machine for doing applique that is my favorite, but I have also done hand applique I really depends on my frame of mind which one I use..

  15. my favorite method is to baste my piece to freezer paper, starch and press it and take the freezer paper out just before i pin it to my piece and hand stitch. looks like needle turned with less work, even with basting first, and portable. most of the time i use a window paned fusible and machine stitch with a straight stitch or blanket stitch….. faster but confining to the machine.

  16. I love appliqué! I have done several ways my favorite is needle turn but I like the way fusible makes it faster to get to the finished product.

  23. Yes, I’ve done applique, only machine applique. I have wrist problems and sewing by hand is painful, but there are lots of cute stitches you can use to tack down the appliques. I’d love to try more elegant ones you have to hand stitch…but not unless my wrist heals.

  24. I live the look of hand appliqué, but I am so much in a hurry that most of mine is fused and machine stitched!

  25. I love the colors you’ve chosen for your blocks. I’ve done machine appliqué but I really like hand appliqué using wool felt.

  27. I am a fairly new quilter and I haven’t tackled applique yet, so I am not sure which method I will prefer. I’ll be trying some with this quilt (I’ve had a crazy busy few months so I am saving them until I have some time to breath…and quilt!).

  28. I love doing applique! I do raw edge most often but will sometimes make the extra effort and use fusible interfacing that rolls the edges once turned inside out. The second method is used for blocks that are going into an actual quilt as opposed to a smaller project.

  29. I love how your blocks are turning out. The color scheme you are using is really nice. My favorite appliqué is the same as you used – fusible raw edge with machine stitching.

  70. Hi Julie,

I learned how to appliqué from you few years ago at the Granery, it’s called ‘Oopsie Daisy’. You helped me picked the fabrics; it is still one my favorite quilts. I am also trying to do better with ‘turned edge applique’ as well as hand appliqué but fusible method is my favorite.

    Thank you, Ruth

Thanks.
