Cozy Afternoon BOM, block 5

Hi everyone!  I’ve just finished the last applique block for the Cozy Afternoon BOM from Jacquelynne Steves.  You can find out the latest information for this month’s block here.

I’m so excited to see what everyone’s blocks will look like once they’re put together. And I’m excited about this month’s giveaway, too! You’ll find the details toward the end of this post. First, here is what my final appliqued block looks like:

I’m cheating a little bit in that I haven’t finished stitching around the applique shapes. It makes such a big difference when it’s totally complete.

I love the design of this block and it has an interesting (and easy) pieced setting. Let me show you how I trimmed the setting triangles down, since it is over-sized. I placed the setting unit on my mat so that it lined up with the lines of the mat. Then I placed the 45 degree line of the ruler on the bottom raw edge of the unit, and the corner of the ruler was placed on the center top of the unit (as shown below).

Then I trimmed the two sides. Repeat with all setting triangles.

And now for the giveaway! Jacqueylnne Steves is giving away this lovely pattern pack that includes a Merry Go Round Quilt Pattern and Megan’s Flower Punchneedle pattern.  All you need to do is leave a comment for me here by September 20th.  Remember, international readers are welcome!

  10. I am following this block of the month. Unfortunately, it is one of those “save till someday” patterns. I have so many things I want to make and it seems like what actually gets accomplished is minimal. Oh well, I need to take comfort in what I do finish. I am finishing a 2014 BOM, by piecing borders and putting them on. It will probably be another two weeks before it’s finished. I only have time to sew on the weekend, and only a little bit at that. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

  11. Your colours are so bright and fresh! Thanks for the demonstration of how to square the corners so accurately. I will definitely be trying that.

  12. downloaded the pdf last night and will embroider my block today, making the block will have to wait as machine out of bounds due to knee injury, loved doing these blocks maybe will do some applique ones too about time I had a go at the technique. Good tip for squaring but the triangles thanks for that

  23. I love pinwheels and have made hundreds but never one like the Merry Go Round. It’s an interesting variation. I used to do punch needle and don’t know why I packed my stuff away. Work got in the way I guess. I love the Cozy Afternoon designs.

  32. Thanks for showing how to square up the side blocks. I enjoy your quilt tips on the quilt show. You’ve asked for suggestions of future tips. I would suggest a segment on thimbles. Seems people use everything from pads to metal thimbles to leather thimbles. My current favorite is the Comfort Thimble made in Eugene, Oregon. It comes in sizes XX-small to X-large so it’s a problems to figure out your size if it’s not at your local sewing shop. Thanks for your blog. I get many good ideas from your your blogging.
