More poinsettia pillows

Are you ready for some poinsettia pillows?  In 2013, I kicked off my Christmas Once a Month Series with a Poinsettia Pillow tutorial.  It’s a cute little pillow that adds a nice touch to your Christmas decorations.

A few weeks ago, one of my blog followers, Gina, sent me a picture of her Poinsettia Pillow that she had just completed.  I love it when you guys share photos with me!  And I’m sure you’re going to love Gina’s pillow, too.  That gingham (or plaid?) really sets off the cream poinsettia nicely.

I was so inspired byGina’s pillow that I had to make one using a white poinsettia, too.  However, I didn’t have any plaid, so I busted out my stash of Winter’s Lane by Kate & Birdie Paper Co. for Moda (2013).  I love the way it works with the poinsettia.  I added my own button to the center that I made with a bit of coordinating fabric.

I tried a different material (instead of felt) for the poinsettia and at first it seemed like a win.  It’s 22 count Aida Cloth, the stuff that cross stitcher’s use.  I thought it would hold up well, but it’s already starting to wear along the edges.  And while the white is a beautiful statement, I can see it getting dirty right before my eyes!

Ah, well.  It’s still pretty.  I like my pillows to have a zipper, so I added one in the bottom seam.  It’s mostly invisible and very practical.

I’m glad the fabric for the pillow back finally found a good home.  It’s another favorite piece from the same line.  I always line my fabric for the pillow back with fusible interfacing.  It adds a nice bit of stability to the pillow.

How’s your holiday decorating going so far?  All perfect and complete, I hope!  Enjoy your weekend!

  1. Hi Julie, I saw a similar white poinsettia pillow in Joann’s Fabric recently and it dawned on me that i had wanted to make one of these (actually 4) but did not get around to it this year. I will be printing your petals pattern now as I already have the felt in white (with some sparkle), red (with some sparkle, too) and maroon. I have Christmas pins my mother once gave me that she wore and this will make a VERY cute and memorable gift for my sisters and daughter (oh, and one for me), displaying the pin in place of a button. Thank you for sharing– I continue to enjoy your ideas and projects. Have a Merry Christmas!!

  2. All of the pillows are beautiful. I would love to make one this year but don’t think I will get to it. I have completed my decorating but have 4 more pillow cases to make for my grandchildren. Maybe I still have time to make one or two poinsettia pillows. Thanks for sharing.

  3. The fabrics that you used for your pillow are beautiful! Interfacing the back and inserting a zipper make for a very professional finish!

  4. Julie, I have a great of zippers. I avoid any project that uses a zipper and I know I’m limiting my creativity but I don’t know how to put in a zipper. I love to make pillows buy I like to be able to take the cover off for washing. I’m a bit of a clean freak. I will admit to carrying a small blacklight made to identify pet urine in carpet with me when I stay in hotels so I can uncover any kind of body fluids on hotel furnishings/need clothing. I told you I was a bit of a clean freak…drives my husband crazy. So, my fear of zippers needs an intervention. Any suggestions?

  5. the pillows have all worked beautifully, loving the backing you have used too would love to have had some of that in my stash

  6. Worked in a fabric store for years and never thought to line the fabric with interfacing. Great idea. I now know what to make for gifts next year. All the kids, grand daughters-in-laws and others. Thanks!

  7. So festive and pretty! I like the suggestion of using interfacing for the pillow back to give stability – why hadn’t I thought of that??!! Thank you, Julie!

  8. I made about a dozen of these pillows last year as gifts using lined burlap as the background fabric. Everybody loved them! This is such a quick a easy project to do and is so striking in most any fabric.
