Hope Blooms Quilt

Welcome to my stop on the Fat Quarter Shop’s Top 10 Video tour!  They’ve invited some bloggers and designers to celebrate with them, and I’m glad to be able to join in the fun.

Today’s top video is the Hope Blooms Quilt Block.  It reminds me of why I love log cabin blocks so much!

The video shows you how to make an 8 1/2″ log cabin block using the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tool.  If you want to make your own Hope Blooms Quilt, you can buy the pattern here.

I used a Jolly Bar of First Crush by Sweetwater for Moda.  I love all the shades of gray, black and red, plus the text prints are my favorite.  This pattern isn’t designed for a Jolly Bar but I made it work.  Plus, I have left over scraps to play with.

The fabric inspired me to make a Valentine themed wall hanging, and I’m gonna be honest with you – I {heart} it!

One of the things I love about applique is the way it can adapt a project to any style or occasion.  For my hearts, I sewed together some leftover strips of fabric and then applied fusible web to the wrong side and cut out the shapes.  For a full lesson on machine applique, you can check out my tutorial here.

This was a quick and easy project.  It took me four days to cut, piece, baste, quilt and bind it.  The Log Cabin ruler is truly genius.  It gives you perfect 8 1/2″ square log cabin blocks every time.  I will definitely be using this again.

I added a flange between the inner and out border.  It gives it a little pop of definition.  You can find my tutorial on how to add a flange here.

I think the name “Hearts Bloom” fits my version of this quilt nicely.  It would make a great gift for a wedding, an anniversary or a Valentine’s Day wall hanging.
