UFO progress and more projects

Happy Monday!  Let me update you on my UFO progress for January and tell you about some more projects that I’m working on.

If you remember from this previous post, my goal is to finish one UFO each month.  January’s UFO is my simple heart quilt which I started last year.  (The pattern for the quilt came from a free tutorial by Allison at Cluck Cluck Sew.)  It’s almost the end of the month and I’m just now getting to work on it.  I’ve drawn some quilting lines using a water soluble pen.  Now it’s time to start quilting.

Heart Quilt being marked

If you happen to be making this quilt and wondering how to quilt it, I found that you can get a nice grid of 5″ squares (on point) as a starting point.  You’ll end up with alternating plain squares which are perfect for some free motion quilting.  I’m going to quilt the marked lines with my walking foot and then I’m going to add some FMQ.  Nothing too fancy because I want this finished!  Done is better than perfect.

How are you doing on your UFO’s?  Do you need a little motivation?  I’m going to have a link up on January 31st, for those of you that have finished your UFO project for January.  It will be open until February 7 at midnight (PST).  I’ll pick one entry from the link up and that person will be the winner of a Frivols, courtesy of me!  More details about the link up and how to enter will be given on January 31st.

Speaking of Frivols, I’m almost finished with the sample for The Granary which is being made from Frivols #6.  There was more piecing involved than I thought, but it’s going to be beautiful when it’s done!  The fabric is Strawberry Fields Revisited by Fig Tree Quilts for Moda.

I have a little project that I’m working on which involves some hand embroidery.  The next step will be to add the applique.  I don’t consider myself very good at embroidery, but it’s good to keep practicing.  I had to re-do “Happiness” once and then I was “happy” with it!

I also have a very old UFO that I’ve brought into the living room for some hand quilting.  This is my Rabbits Prefer Chocolate Quilt which I hand appliqued about 4 years ago.  I’m definitely not proficient at hand quilting, so this is painfully slow for me.  But if I do a little each day, it will get done (hopefully before I die).  Plus it’s great to have something to keep your hands busy while watching TV.

  1. Julie, I am curious why you are hand quilting that adorable rabbits prefer chocolate quilt. I have only known you to machine quilt. I too have made a similar quilt but now need to quilt the top and I have never thought of hand quilting it. I struggle with free motion quilting. Maybe I should hand quilt my top and finally get it finished!

  2. That is how I hand quilted a baby quilt that I started for our first grand-daughter. Start it in July…she was born in Oct. She received the finished quilt on her 18th birthday. The only way I finished it was by taking it camping with us. It worked!!

  3. I’m working on some quilt blocks that were made in 2004 by my SILs mother who has since passed away. My goal is to have a completed quilt top before I head back to the northeast in April. My other UFOs are still in the bottom of a box. You are keeping so busy, and your projects are all lovely!

  4. Wow, you sure have been busy. Everything looks great. Are the chocolate bunnies a Bunny Hill pattern? They are adorable.

  5. My sister and I have the same goal each week: finish and/or repurpose a UFO. We call it Leftover Monday. I love the colors and the spring themes in your post. They inspire me on a cold and snowy January. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing!

  6. Everything is beautiful as usual!! I’m so glad we are doing the UFO challenge. I too have just completed one (actually a set) for this month. I’m really excited about this year!

  7. So many great projects. I have been working on finishing up some projects this month, it feels great to share a finish. Hand quilting is something I enjoy but it takes me quite a while too.

  8. I finished a baby blanket I was putting off this month I don’t know how to add pics or I would show you!

  9. Julie, you are so talented. I am working on a UFO from last year – Quilters’ Garden. It will take a while but I have set a goal to at least have all the blocks done by next month. Happy quilting!

  10. you have 3 lovely projects on the go here, not really got a UFO plan as all but 2 of my projects are at the flimsy stage and still not confident to quilt them yet

  11. I loved seeing your heart and bunny quilt progress– darling quilts! And sweet embroidery and the one you’re doing for the Granary is gorgeous! I’m feeling motivated!

  12. I’m making that heart quilt too! I decided to use one of my leaf templates for the quilting. I love hand quilting – it’s my favorite part!

  13. Thanks you once again for a lovely blog, I so enjoy reading all that you are involved with, I like the ‘thought’ better done that in the cupboard waiting.
Have a great day, looking forward to the next instalment

  14. Did you ever finish the Cozy Afternoon block of the month quilt? That is my UFO. I am att Hong the boarders tomorrow! I would love to see your strategy for quilting. I’m planning to do some stitching in the ditch with the walking foot then moving to my mid arm for some fmq. I’m kind of new to fmq and I think this is a great quilt to experiment with some patterns.

  15. Someone said recently, “Better done than another UFO!” Keep plugging away on the hand quilting & it’ll be a finish too.

  16. Your projects are so beautiful! I also have a goal to finish UFO’s but it’s been put on hold while I start/work on/finish a queen size quilt for my sister’s wedding. Gotta love short engagements. :/ Good luck with your UFO’s!
