Keeping up with BOM’s and QAL’s

I’m keeping up with all some of the block-of-the-months (BOM’s) and quilt alongs (QAL’s) that I’ve signed up for.  As I typed the word “all”, I realized the white lie I was telling.  I’ve had to put two BOM’s and one QAL on the back burner.  What was I thinking at the beginning of the year when I signed up for all of these?  I’m sure some of you can relate; they were just too cute and intriguing to pass up.  Let’s take a look at what I’m left with.

The Sugar Block Club is alive and well in my sewing room.  As soon as April’s block was posted, I had it sewn together the next day.  Amy has made another cute interpretation of a classic block, the Ohio Star.

I love the “sugar” blocks this year and how quickly they can be put together, yet still look intricate.  The first four blocks are playing well together.  I’m using a fat eighth bundle of Prairie by Corey Yoder for Moda fabrics.  So happy and fun!

The Splendid Sampler blocks keep on coming and I’m just barely able to keep up.  I enjoy the variety and the 6″ block size.  Here are the last four I’ve made.  The embroidered block took me the longest, but it was worth it!

Now I have twelve blocks finished and three or four to go.  The dent in my Fig Tree stash is barely noticeable.

I am co-leading a BOM at my local quilt shop, and we’re making all of the blocks from Farm Girl Vintage, by Lori Holt.  Each block has been a blast to make.  We’re making the smaller size blocks (6″ finished), but we throw in a 12″ block now and then for demonstration purposes.  Aren’t they adorable?

Behind the scenes, I’m getting ready to participate in Jacquelynne Steve’s next BOM, Maggie’s First Dance.  Sign ups have begun, and I’ll have more to share towards the end of April.  For now, I’m deciding on a color palette and getting my fabric together.

With all of this activity, I’d better get back to my sewing room!  Busy, busy, busy!

  1. I hope you will keep posting your progress. I love your fabric choices and that has motivated me to get going.

  2. I love love love your fabric choices! Will you be placing borders around each block besides the outside borders so they really pop? Thank you for sharing.

  3. They are looking beautiful, Julie! I just don’t know how you keep up! Love your fabric choices. I need to get out of the scrappy mode and start stocking up on some coordinated bundles. Will your fat eighth bundle be enough to finish the “sugar” blocks, my favorites? XO

  4. You have done a much better job of keeping up than I have. I had planned to do the Sugar Blocks and Splendid Sampler but have not had time. I love the fabrics you are using on all of your projects you shared.

  5. You have some lovely blocks here, like you I find BOMs hard to resist and have told myself none next year! A bit behind with the splendid sampler applique and FPP not been able to do so far but maybe one day I will learn.

  6. This maybe a silly question, but as a newbie (recently retired) to quilting, can I ask what do you do with all these BOMs? Do they all go into quilts?
Love the blog and your work, wish I could put colours together like that!
    Thanks

  7. You always have the best choices of colors and fabrics. You inspired me to catch up with the Sugar blocks. They are so beautiful…..

  8. Beautiful blocks! I’d love to know how you did such perfect piecing – I’ve been quilting forever and have tried every way there is (I think!) and they are seldom exact like yours are. What’s the secret? Gorgeous.

  9. I know what you mean about the BOMs. This year they are everywhere. I’m not complaining and I wish I could make them all. I especially enjoyed the video you suggested earlier today. Everyone is so productive this year. I am in the finishing stages of projects number 6 and 7 for the year: a shawl, a pair of socks, felted booties, two sweaters and a quilt will be done for the year and 3 of them are pretty old projects. I’m trying to do every other one as an old UFO and so far so good. Not bad for April… oh yah, I’m seeing the bottom of a bag of Shetland so knitting, quilting and spinning projects are moving right along. Yeah Me!

  10. I wrote last month about the Sugar Block Club. I did do my orange peel block over and am much happier with it. Also have done the April Block. I like how you are able to choose fabrics that complement each other. I’ve been quilting forever and still don’t have that skill.
Your last post mentioned the super sized stars. It’s a coincidence that I started a star quilt 2 years ago that each block is 16 inches. I made 20 blocks. I finally finished the quilt last week. It’s ready do go to the long arm quilter. I did it all in blues & greens. The star blocks are almost identical to yours. Interesting.

  11. Love your fabric on the sampler blocks, I’m downloading them but not starting them for long while. It amazes my how fabric choice can change a block’s appearance.

  12. Julie, your choice of fabrics, and your skilled work on these blocks is just inspiring! I am a fairly beginner quilter, and my eyes are just drinking in the colors and the patterns, thank you for sharing with us!

  13. Julie All your blocks are beautiful I like Splendid Sampler Block 11 you did. I did not do that block or Block 15 but I did the bonus blocks that Pat Sloan designed, The Sugar block club blocks are really great.
