Welcome to Maggie’s First Dance BOM

Today kicks off the introduction blog hop for Maggie’s First Dance Block of the Month by Jacquelynne Steves.  I’m so excited and grateful to be one of the featured bloggers again!  This is a FREE, six-month BOM program that starts in June, and I really hope you’ll join us.

MaggiesFirstDanceBOMButtonRect

To start things off, we’re introducing all of the featured bloggers and then there’s a giveaway for you, too!(now closed).  There are seven participating bloggers this year and you’ll be able to see everyone’s progress each month as we make our way through the pattern.  Some of us will be doing different forms of applique, maybe some embroidery or just piecing.  Make sure to get acquainted with the talented quilters below, starting with Jacquelynne Steves.

Greg at Grey Dogwood Studio
Monique at Farm House Quilts
Julie at The Crafty Quilter (you are here!)
Beth at EvaPaige Quilt Designs
Kim at My Go-Go Life
Jacque at Lily Pad Quilting
Brenda at The Quilting Nook

If this is your first time visiting The Crafty Quilter, thank you for popping in and welcome to my creative space!  I’m so glad you’re here.  This truly is my happy place and I love to share my latest projects, tips, tutorials and other quilty and crafty things.

Julie Cefalu, The Crafty Quilter

  • This year I’m focusing on UFO’s and getting them finished.  I have a monthly challenge and link up that you can find easily at the Hello 2016, Goodbye UFO’s tab at the top of the page.
  • My Sew Thankful Sundays are very popular; I do a roundup of new tutorials and ideas that I’ve found on the first Sunday of each month.
  • You can also find me on The Quilt Show, where I share tips and technique videos.
  • I’m always looking for new projects to make and new tips to share.  You can find my past tips and tutorials by navigating to the menu tabs at the top of the page.

Now that we’re acquainted, let me show you the fabrics I’ll be working with for my version of Maggie’s First Dance.  I recently purchased this bundle of Rhapsody Bop by ADORNit  and it’s going to be perfect for this project.

Rhapsody Bop fabric from Adorn it

The main print is full of fun words and phrases along with some sweet graphics.  That will be my border fabric.  Along with the applique, I’m going to embroider (I think) words or phrases in the alternating blocks to compliment the main print.  I still need to add a few coordinating fabrics from my stash and then I’ll be set.

If this is your first time participating in one of Jacquelynne’s BOMs, you are going to love it!  I’ve made her last two block of the months and I, personally, love the combination of applique and piecing.  Her instructions are well written and easy to follow.  Here is last year’s BOM, Cozy Afternoon.

Sew Sweet Simplicity was the first of Jacquelynne’s BOMs that I made.  Alas, this one has become another UFO.  The blocks are complete, but it hasn’t been put together yet.  Maybe this year?

Now it’s time for the giveaway!  Jacquelynne is giving away two of her own digital patterns which means that international entries are welcome.  This giveaway has ended.

  1. Hi Julie, I am so late in leaving a comment about this upcoming J. Steves quilt a long. I too have signed up for this, my first time doing one of her quilt patterns. I love to machine applique and I just love the fabric you picked out for this project! I too chose some of the same fabric you did. I was wondering how you are going to use the smaller grey graphic fabric? as the background for the blocks? You have also chosen a lt. grey burnished fabric. Are you going to use this one for the background? Also, is that dark burnished fabric a navy color? how are you going to use this in the blocks? Sorry for all the questions but I am still having a hard time choosing fabric. I am also working on the Splendid Sampler quilt a long and that is taking up a good part of my time. My Janet Stone ABC quilt top is done but not quilted yet. I have emailed you before and I just want you to know how much I enjoy your blog, I feel we are quilting friends. I have just retired ( a little earlier than planned) to take care of my 92 year old mother. My time is limited for my 2 passions— quilting and needlepoint but I am trying to find more balance in my life… time for me as well as time taking care of my Mom. Well, sorry this is so long and thank you for your time.

  2. My favorite right now would be Jenny Doan’s Block books, as she shows us easy ways to make blocks and quilts

  3. I don’t have a favorite quilt designer. I love them all and troll the internet for more quilt designs. Jacquelynne Steves has the most diversity in quilts: she uses fabric, embroidery, and love to create. I have been enjoying her block of the month from last year and am sure this year’s BOM will be just as wonderful.

  4. Honestly I can’t answer your question, I like browsing the Internet so I really don’t pay much attention to names, I like some patterns according to fabrics used and pattern itself (pinwheel for instance)
Thank you in any case for the chance

  5. I love so many!!! I’m new to quilting but I had to have Lori Holt’s book Farm Girl Vintage, I love everything of her’s I’ve seen.

  6. One of my favorite designers is Eleanor Burns from Quilt in A Day. and I have so many of her books.
    [email protected]
I follow your blogs and I love the tutorials on Sew Thankful Sundays. Keep up the good work.

  7. Hi Julie, At the present time, my favorites would be Jenny Doan (for her easy projects) and Lori Kennedy (for her machine quilting tutorials).
Love your choice of fabrics for this project.

  8. My favorite designer is Sindy of FatCatPatterns. I have made a couple of her quilts and am in the middle of two of last year’s BOMs (felled by breast cancer in July). I am currently trying to get caught up. I also love Esther Aliu’s designs and am working on one of her current BOMs.

  9. I am just learning about designers and their quilts and/or fabrics. I am learning a lot from Pat Sloan and just bought 2 of her books. I am working on Jacquelynne’s quilts with that she has designed and really enjoyed how easily she explains the process.

  10. You are so cute sitting on your lawn with your fabrics!! Lately I keep seeing quilts/patterns by Nancy Rink that I’m quite taken with!

  11. I love Annie Smith’s Quilts. I did her BOM which was really neat as we talked online once a week via the computers. This was very helpful. Love her new applique book.

  12. Good morning. My favorite is Kaffe Fassett and Lori Holt. Both are different in their style but the colors and fun are reflected in each.

  13. I love the quilts and fabrics by Edita Sitar from Laundry Basket quilts. I would love to take a class with her.

  14. Just one favorite? There’s no such thing! LOL! One of the things that has always appealed to me with quilting was the diversity of techniques and designs (and designers)! I have collected Jacquelynne’s last two BOMs because they were darling — especially the last one, with it’s tea-themed blocks — but I haven’t gotten around to making either. Yours are both darling — I love the color scheme you used for the last one, particularly! For now (in this moment) I’m going to say my designer of choice would be Jaybird Quilts. I love Julie’s use of geometrics and her offerings of smaller projects (which are my preference, due to RV living) and the specialty rulers! (But Edyta Sitar, of Laundry Basket Quilts, would be a close runner up … as would Jacquelynne!) 🙂

  15. Hi from the Netherlands. I am Riya and I am up to start my first quilt ever…I will make a nice topper for my sidetable. I am really looking forward to start the BOM.
Right now I don’t have a favourite quilter yet…I just love everything, there is so much inspiration…

  16. I really don’t have a favorite current designer. I love all the old traditional blocks and enjoy working with them for the most part. I do follow Bonnie Hunter because she makes a lot of scrappy type quilts.

  17. Well ,I’m here on Julie Cefalu’s blog ,so yes she is my inspiration and guides me to so many fun, beautiful and amazing Quilting ! Through her I got to know about Jaquelynne Steves and a lots and lots of other great quilting the page could not be long enough to write it all down !
It would be amazing if I would win ,I love quilting so much and live on a tiny Island with no sewing store ! Many thanks to all the bloggers ,that make it possible for people like me to learn and see what we can make !

  18. Love so many designers…Bonnie and Camille are my faves right now but I love Bunches more. So many talented designers come to mind.

  19. I guess my favorite book would have to be the last book I purchased. Underground Railroad Sampler by Eleanor Burns and Sue Bouchard. Not only are the patterns wonderful and easy to understand, but the history is so interesting.

  20. My daughter, Lacey, is my inspiration for quilting.
    She has the knack for finding the right pattern, right material and is always encouraging;

  21. I like all of Me and My Sister’s books and patterns by Barbara Groves & Mary Jacobson. I make so many quilts for Project Linus, and so many of their patterns make small quilts perfect for little ones.

  22. My favourite quilt designer is Judy Niemeyer and I love all her patterns and books. Her paper piecing method is quite unique, and although a little challenging, the results are always worth the extra effort.

  23. I have a hard time choosing a favorite, the books I have used the most have been Camille Roskelley’s and Joanna Figueroa’s. I have learned so much from the tutorials quilting bloggers have shared.

  24. I would say at this time my favorite quilt designer is Jenny Doan. I am ‘cutting accurately’ challenged and using the precuts help in that area of my frustrations. Another reason why I am attracted to her designs is that there are not so many different sizes for each of the blocks. So far I have way more UFO’s that completed quilts. I am a collector of all quilt designers and fabric designers. They all ‘lying in wait’ baskets for their turn to be created in the next ‘UFO’…oops! meant quilt! I am having a fantastic time increasing my stash and dreaming of the next quilt to attempt.

  25. I don’t have a favorite book or designer. I tend to try them all. To list a few Eleanor Burns, Jaybird Quilts, Sassafras Lane Designs, Alex Anderson, and so on.

  26. I have two favorite quilt designers. I have been following Jacquelynne for quite some time and she is at the top of my list along with Michelle from Raspberry Rabbits. I remember your quilt blocks from the Cozy Afternoon Bom and I think that your quilt turned out so beautiful with the fabrics you chose. I am looking forward to seeing your new blocks with this BOM.

  27. Only choosing one is not easy. It seems they all have contributed to my quilting journey; including you. But if you make me choose, I would have to say for today it is Anita Grossman Soloman. She makes me laugh and is very innovative in her thinking.

  28. I am loving jacqueline steves designs and pat sloans. I have made several irish chain quilts and love that pattern too.

  29. My favorite designer: Maureen Craknell
My favorite quilt book right now: Scrap Quilt Secrets by Diane D. Knott
Your fabric choices are wonderful. Cant wait to see how you put them together.

  30. I first started being interested in quilting when I found Missouri Star on line. I was amazed watching Jenny Doan explain how easy beginning quilting can be. I’ve been following her ever since.

  31. Pat Sloan’s Camera, Color, Quilts! by Pat Sloan is a lovely book! Although there are many, many more favorites that I have!

  32. Well, I am really new to quilting, so the only designers I know so far are Jacquelynne Steves and Pat Sloan. Pat is currently doing the Splendid Sampler, and I thought it would be a good way to learn new techniques. I love both of these ladies work, but I am sure that there are many wonderful and inspiring teachers/quilters I haven’t met yet!

  33. Hi I have many favorite designers I rely on but I love youtube for tutorials and Missouri Quilts is the best and the next best is Moda they have great designers there too .

  34. My first quilt was from a book by Lynette Jensen, now I’m working on one by Kim Diehl. But I’d give anything in the world to go quilt fabric shopping with my sister again. This is something I can never do again as she passed away from cancer on 9/14/2014. I miss her input into brighter, happier colors.

  35. I wish I could choose just one designer to love. It would be so much cheaper. I love Jenny from Sew Kind of Wonderful, Jaybird quilts, Bonnie and Camille, Pat Sloan………to name just a few.

  36. Hi, I just had a look at some of your designs, and works in progress. My you do some lovely work, so much so that I would like to go shopping you and with all of the blogger’s, who could choose, so much talent.
In fact just to be able to shop in the US would be wonderful. Thank you for sharing your work. Kindest Regards Judy Wheldon

  37. It’s hard to limit my favorite to just one, so I’ll pick two: Silvia Pippin, and Brenda Henning. I’ve met both, back when I still lived in San Jose and was a member of SCVQA, and found them to be great teachers!

  38. This is very hard to pick. I first started quilting when I
found Missouri Star Quilt Co and Jenny Doan. I love her easy explanations and tricks. I learn visually so it works great for me.

  39. I love Alex Anderson for her beautiful design and clear instructions. Her quilts can be made quickly which I often need. My favorite designer is probably Judy Neimeyer but her designs are so complex that they become UFOs. I also like Jenny Doan for her easy patterns and the enthusiasm and happiness with which she shares them. I could go on forever, there are so many fabulous designers out there. Of course, I also love Jacquelynne Steve for her creative patterns and willingness to share.

  40. This is a very hard question! I love scrappy quilts so Lynn Roddy Brown, Bonnie Hunter, and Pat Speth are some of my favorites.

  41. I love Jim and Jan Shore’s “Passion for Quilts. I love all the block designs, the colours and the integrated approach with Jim’s sculptures, so talented. At least I can have a go at the quilts.

  42. My favorite is always the one I am working on at the moment. I love Jenny Doan and Eleanor Burn’s approach to quilting reminds me of my Grandmother. When I want a challenge I head to Edita Star or Judy Martin.

  43. I would have to say I have two favorite designers. Edyta Starr and Kim Diehl. I love both of their styles. Thanks for the wonderful giveaway.

  44. My favorite designer is Lynette Jensen so any book that has Thimbleberries on it is one I will buy

  45. Its hard to pick just one. But coming to mind are Darlene Zimmerman and Heather Mulder Peterson( Anka’s treasures). Thanks, Patty B.

  46. Hi Julie,

I love the fabrics you chose. Some of them to me have a linen look, which I totally love. I like Bonnie Hunters quilts. Vicky

  47. I loooove Jenny Doan…and also Amy Gibson now too!

Thank you for chance to win your Give-a-way!! 🙂

  48. Hello Julie, I could say my favorite quilter is you, but I must confess I do love your print choice for the color of aqua,,,which I love in your blocks…I just love that tangerine color of Joanna’s of Fig Tree and Co. Thank you for sharing your fabric choices for the 2016 BOM. I can’t wait for your block to see how you place the fabrics together to make something so pretty…..

  49. I have been trying to organize all and I do mean ALL my quilting books. I have to so many different type of quilting books — as I look at them, it is like visiting with “my friends.” I like Alex Anderson’s quilt books. I am wanting to purchase her newest quilt book. As I am reading the comments, I go yes, I love this person’s books also. As many have commented, it is hard to select just one.

  50. Love creating new designs with Katja’s book “the New Hexagon”. I feel so artistic as the pieces come together to create a new design.

  51. I have just recently come to love Jacqueline Steve’s quilts she designs I really don’t have any favorite books. I usually find quilts I like online.

  52. It is so hard to pick just one designer, but guess I would have to narrow it down to Eleanor Burns, as I have followed her for many years and think I have all of her books. But natch, I have to give credit to Jenny Doan, Bonnie Hunter and Pat Sloan. These are all the ladies that have gotten me hooked on quilting. Thanks for the chance and am excited to start on this quilt.

  53. I love your fabric choices.
The book on my wish list is The Ultimate Guide to Machine Quilting by Angela Walters and Christa Watson.
My go-to patterns for a quick gift quilt are the Disappearing 9 Patch and Tricia Cribbs’ Turning Twenty Again.

  54. Amy Gibson’s BOM on Craftsy was the first time I’d participated and her directions and enthusiasm were great. I’m very happy with the finished quilt. I follow her latest BOM too. You, Julie, are a great designer and write easy to follow, detailed instructions. I’ve signed up for Maggie’s First Dance too. As for books, I really like Farm Girl Vintage by Lori Holt, but haven’t made any blocks from it yet….

  55. Not fair to just pick on. Hmmmmm….I’m still working on finishing my Farm Girl Vintage by Lori Holt so this book is fresh in my old weary mind. I really had fun working from this book.

  56. I love Jacquelynne Steves and Lynette Anderson. I am enrolled in Maggies First Dance patterns. crystalbluern at tds dot not

  57. Well, this one is pretty easy for me. I have only just begun to get into quilting. I’ve admired it from afar for as long as I can remember, but I’ve never had the time to get involved until now. So far the only book I own is “Quilting for Dummies ” therefore that’s the only one I’ve done any reading from and it’s my favorite.

  58. So many great designers and wonderful quilt books…I love anything scrappy though, and Bonnie Hunter is one of my favorite scrappy quilt designers.

  59. Because I’m new to quilting, I don’t know too many designers but I do love the first quilt I worked on and am trying to complete by Jenny Beyer. It has every color in it and it it hand sewn and I will hand quilt it as soon as I complete the last border.

  60. I have to say Jacquelynne Steves is one of my favorite designers. I too did Cozy Afternoon and it’s in my UFO pile to finish. One of my favorite books is “Egg Money” by Eleanor Burns.

  61. Don’t count me in the draw, just stopping by to say “howdy” and see your post. Love, love your fabrics for the BOM, it’s going to be fun to see everyone’s variety! My fav designer is Jacquelynne, and after that there’s Debbie Mumm. Lynette Andersen, and Amanda Murphy, and Pat Sloan, and, and….. Hehee! And I love to design my own stuff, too!

  62. I love your sew thankful Sundays! My current favorite is lori holt, and I have been working on 2 of her quilts

  63. I can’t decide. There are sooooo many wonderful designers and everyday I find new ones that interest me. Right now I like my book on scrappy quilts.

  64. I am just learning to quilt so I don’t know many books or designers but I do love Jennie Doan of Missouri Star Quilt Company. I love all her wonderful videos on quilting, on You Tube.

  65. I have a new favorite designer! Her name is Diane Califano. She just had her first book published. I met her at the AQS Quilt Show in Lancaster, Pa. She was speaking in the “Author’s Corner” and I sat down and listened to her talking about her new book. I fell in love with her. I bought her book, “Building Blocks-Back to Quilt Basics. The book is a great instructional book for beginners or a wonderful reference book for the experienced quilter. The quilt from the book is gorgeous. You really must check the book out. It is well written and beautifully illustrated!

  66. My favorite book??? Wow that is a tough question. I am just loving so many things I see. Right now I am very attached to Half Scrap Quilts by Mickey Depre. Like you, I have UFO’s to finish, while the stack of “To Be Started” keeps growing. I really appreciated your videos for The Quilt Show for their BOM A to Z for Ewe and Me, which is in a UFO box waiting for me.

  67. It’s so hard to pick one designer or one book! I’m currently collecting books on FMQ designs-I like Angela Waters’ books.
As for a designer, I really like all of Amy Gibson’s designs.
I also love following you on the blog and on the Quilt Show!
    Thanks,
    Liz

  68. I have so many “favorite” designers, so to pick just one is tough. I love doing Anka’s Treasure’s patterns as they are so well written. That is a major plus in my book!
Can’t wait for the block of the month.
This is my year of finishing U.F.O’s as well.

  69. I like wild and crazy books – Diane S. Hire is one of my favs! Seeing her tomorrow in Atlanta….yipee!!
I love creative quilt books – something out of the ordinary! mumbird3atgmaildotcom

I love the combination of piecing and applique (which is why I love jacquelynne’s patterns so much, too) and many of Jens have both.

  71. My favorite Quilt designer is Sue who teaches Five At the Hive BOM at the Honeybee Quilt Store in Austin Texas.

  72. I am such a traditionalist that I go for Jinny Beyer fabrics on just about anyone’s design or
Civil War designs using Kansas Troubles fabric.

  73. I don’t really have a favorite designer but I do like Jenny Doan’s designs. Maybe she’s my favorite and I just don’t realize it.

  74. Hi Julie! Di Ford-Hall is my favorite designer and I adore her book “Primarily Quilts, 19th Century Inspirations,” just luscious stuff.

  75. I love it when I have an email from you in my “inbox.” You are so creative, and I always love your fabric choices for projects. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. I don’t have a favorite designer, but I do like Jacquelynn Steves patterns. Thank you for introducing me to her work. I currently tend to read quilt magazines rather than books. My favorite quilting books, however, are the Jennifer Chiaverini novels.

  76. I am currently doing a 365 challenge – a block a day for a year. Not much time for anything else! I think I can fit in time for a block a month though! I love Kaffe Fassett fabrics and plan on doing one of his quilts next.

  77. Eleanor Burns is the lady that caught my eye back in the 90’s and started me on my road to quilting. I’m not sure if I should thank her or not. LOL. I love doing it, but it is easy to get caught up in the madness. I took a break for 15 years, busy with 3 kids, now I’m back and loving this whole New Online Quilting World! I’ve discovered BOMs and am enjoying Lori Holt’s current program. If I could just stop buying fabric…

  78. I rarely buy a book but the last one I did buy was CULTURAL FUSION QUILTS by Sujata Shah.
I’m looking forward to seeing this new B.O.M. and it could possibly be my first sew-a-long 🙂

  79. Within the past year, I have come to enjoy Pat Sloan’s fabrics and designs. Everything she brings to us is so cheerful. Very much like your designs, Julie. I look forward to seeing what you do with that great group of fabric. Thank you for all the inspiration you give us.

  80. I love the mystery of the blocks and the ability to learn new skills in completing each one!

  81. I don’t really have any favorite books. But I have gotten a big kick out of working on-line projects with Michelle Foster, Jacqueline Steves and Pat Sloan. It’s really interesting trying to keep up with all three of them at the same time. Keeps and older brain active!

  84. I only get to pick one?! I just love “The Big Book of Nickel Quilts” by Pat Speth with Charlene Thode. So many wonderful ideas……Can’t wait to participate in the BOM this June!

  85. My favorite designer(s) has to be Minick and Simpson. I’m enthralled with reproduction prints. UFOs can also be found at my house…too much inspiration is available on the Internet. However, I’m looking forward to Jacquelynne’s BOM because I love to hand embroider.

  86. I have to say Jacquelynne Steves is my favorite!!! I, too, did Cozy Afternoon. I love teapots and teacups and it was a draw I could not fight! I ordered the fabric and her directions were so clear. I am not quite finished (got a late start due to the arrival of my first great granddaughter), but I love how it is turning out. Her selection of fabrics was perfect and I am looking forward to participating in this BOM!

  87. I subscribe to your blog and before you wrote you had signed up for the Maggie’s First Dance I had signed up also and purchased the fabric selections she used in her quilt. This is my first BOM and I’m looking forward to following you along the process.

    I love Amanda Murphy’s works.

    Sandy

  88. My favourite designer is Di Ford and favourite book is Primarily Quilts by Di Ford. It is full of stunning, heirloom quilt patterns and the instructions are very well written.

  89. I guess my favorite of all is Alex Anderson because it was through her wonderful TV program that I was introduced to quilting. It is through people like Ms. Anderson and the wonderful Eleanor Burns and yes, of course Jennie Doan that my world of quilting grew. Quilting has been a life saver for me. I have been unable to work for the past two and a half years due to back issues. If it wasn’t for the wonderful friends that I have made through my local Quilting Guilds, I don’t know what I would do. Thank you Alex Anderson for getting me started in the wonderful world of quilting.

  90. Wow, a super hard question! My favorite book would be the one I most recently decided to actually buy. Among contemporary quilt designers I see online, I would say that ColorGirlQuilts hits all the points,Mitch interesting patterns and use of color in her designs.
@susansquiltstudio. Sgrancio at Comcast dot net

  91. I don’t really have a favorite, but since I’ve recently become enchanted with scrappies I think (for the moment) I like Bonnie Hunter and Pat Speth. Thanks for a great giveaway!

  92. Right now I am loving Blueberry Park and Zen Chic. The book I’ve used most recently was one by Jacquie Gering on machine quilting using a walking foot.

  93. At the moment, I enjoy Jenny Doan’s designs because I am using up stash fabric for charity quilts and her ideas are simple and fast. But, I also tend towards Cluck Cluck Sew Sew….. her designs are fresh and fun and look crisp. Too many great ideas and inspiration, not enough hours in a day!

  94. Yes, quilting is an addiction but completely harmless to all! My favourites are Lawrie Holt, Jenny Doan and lynnette Anderson, love them all for different reasons. My particular face is appliqué I find it so relaxing.

  95. I have so many designers whose work I love. If I had to pick just one, it would probably be Sue Garman.

  96. The How to Create an Heirloom Quilt: Learn Over 35 Machine Techniques to Build a Beautiful Quilt
by Pauline Ineson I love Pauline’s designs her quilts are amazing. I’ve been lucky enough to meet her at shows and she’s vry modest and willing to share her techniques which she makes looks so simple.

  97. I have two favorites……….Lori Holt and Jenny Doan. They both write easy directions and their fabric choices are always so pretty and perfect for the project they are doing..

  98. My husband just informed me he thinks quilting must be an addiction! I think he is right. I so much enjoy it. I appreciate Amy Gibson’s quilt designs as she incorporates traditional blocks with a more modern twist. Hers was the first online class I took and she is still a favorite. I also look forward, Julie, to your posts, particularly the Sew Thankful Sunday ones. I have become acquainted with far more quilting and sewing blogs as a result of your posts. Thanks! I am looking forward to BOM with Jacquelyne Steves. and others.

    Joyce [email protected]

  99. Favorite quilt book is Still Stripping by Eleanor Burns…..so easy and where my first ever quilt came from.

  100. I’ve only been quilting for a year so I don’t really have a favorite book or instructor yet, other than my sister!
