Triangle Tricks class sample finished and visit with Baby Amelia

I feel like I’ve been gone a while, and yes, it’s been 12 days since my last blog post.  It doesn’t take much to get behind, and throw in a short trip to Austin to visit my baby granddaughter and I’m definitely spread thin.  But totally worth it!

We visited  Springdale Farm in East Austin and had a wonderful breakfast there while checking out the gardens and the farm animals.  I love seeing the world through a little one’s eyes!  Amelia had almost as much fun as we did.

My iPhone is full of pictures and videos of Amelia, and I could write an entire blog post on the joys of being a grandparent.  But I’m not going there today.  Let’s just say we had an amazing visit and we miss her already!

I did finish (except for the binding) a class sample called Triangle Tricks which I snapped a few pictures of before heading to class.  I love the vintage feel of this little table topper.

The pattern is called “Boden” and it’s from Pat Sloan’s new book, Teach Me to Sew Triangles, which is one of the best books I’ve seen when it comes to working with half-square triangles, quarter-square triangles, flying geese and equilateral triangles.  Plus, it has a “Triangle Tricks Cheat Sheet” that gives you all of the formulas used in an easy to read format.  Love it!

Pat teaches you several methods for making those units, so you can find the one that works for you.  The instructions and photos/diagrams are excellent, plus the projects are lovely.   I’m using it for a new class I’m teaching at The Granary which is perfect for confident beginning quilters.

If you compare my sample to the one in the book, you’ll notice that my blocks are a little different.  It’s one of those times when I was in a hurry and I flipped my units around which created a slightly different block.  Oh well!  It’s a good lesson on how you can mix things up (albeit unintentionally) to get a unique look.

I used a charm pack of Bread ‘n Butter by American Jane for Moda Fabrics and a white print for the background fabric.  It looks like it’s ready for a good old-fashioned picnic.

  1. Hi Julie,
We used the Norwegian Rail Line site to purchase tickets for pvt. rail line, as we already had eurail passes. We went back to Oslo from Bergin on an over nite sleeper car , as we were headed to Stockholm
Since you are traveling by car, it sounds like you need to go to the nutshell website & book the train tickets (both trains) & the ferry all at once. They have phone # listed to help w/ bookings.
    Hope this helps!

  6. I was wondering where you have been and had checked your page a few times in case i might of missed something. Glad to hear all is well and you had some time to visit your daughter and her family. Wow Amelia has grown. The table topper is beautiful with the fabric line, and Pat Sloan is wonderful with her tips and techniques and sew a longs. But this year I’m being really careful and trying to focus on UFO’s and selecting a few new projects. My May UFO’s are almost ready! Oh–, While you were gone I found out I am going to be a grandma at the end of the year :).

I’m glad you posted info on Pat Sloan’s “Teach Me To Sew Triangles” book. I shy away from triangles. I think this book would be a good one for me. Thanks for sharing.

  9. It’s so good to see pictures of your little granddaughter again! She is adorable and of course, growing! My daughter and her family are moving to Austin this summer, so we might be visiting Springdale Farm too. I’m looking forward to my first trip to Austin and checking out the quilt shops. Your new table topper is lovely and has everything I like, bright colors and 30’s prints. Thanks for sharing.
