Maggie’s First Dance, Block 1 and giveaway

Welcome to the first block of Maggie’s First Dance, a free block of the month by Jacqueylynne Steves.  I’m delighted to be one of the featured bloggers, and I can tell you already that I’m going to love working on this BOM!

(Giveaway information can be found at the end of this post is now closed.)

I’m making the applique version of the blocks, but you can choose to do embroidery or use a focus fabric instead.  The quilt design is beautiful either way.  The final quilt will measure 53″ square.

Remember, this is a FREE block of the month program that is graciously presented by Jacquelynne Steves.  You need to sign up here in order to get the patterns.  You will receive the 5 block patterns over the first 5 months of the event, and then receive the border/finishing instructions in the 6th and final month.

Block 1 is a beauty and I thoroughly enjoyed making it.  The instructions are wonderful and it’s easier than it looks!

Each month I will share any tips that might be helpful in constructing the block.  I guess it’s the teacher in me that wants to make it easy and clear for everyone.  Not that the instructions aren’t perfect, because they are!  I just know that you can’t include all of the little hints on a pdf pattern without making it 20 pages long.

For this first block, you’ll be making some quarter square triangles (qst’s).  When you’re sewing the triangles together, I find it easier to start on the corner that is at a right angle as shown in the photo on the bottom left.  If you begin your stitching on the other corner (bottom right photo), the tip of the triangle tends to get sucked down into the hole of the throat plate.

I twirled the center seam of the qst’s so they would lie flatter.  This method gave me nesting seams as well when it came to joining the two units together.

When you sew the block rows together, you’ll have two diagonal seams that come together on each end that create a visually straight line.  I call these “match points”.

Maggie's First Dance, Block 1 made by Julie Cefalu @ The Crafty Quilter

Use a setting pin to get those intersections (match points) as close as possible.  The setting pin goes perpendicular, straight through the “X” in the seam on the top and again on the seam underneath.  Then pin on each side of the setting pin.  Remove the setting pin before you stitch the seam.

Now for the fun part. You all know I love applique in all forms.  For this project I used a raw-edge fusible technique with Heat’nBond lite for the fusible web and a fine zig zag stitch in my favorite Aurifil cotton thread.  If you want detailed instructions for that technique, you can see my tutorial here.

I made my stems with a bias tape maker, so the edges are turned.  I prefer the flexibility of this method (rather than fused) because my stems can bend the way I want them to.  I also used a stabilizer on the back of the applique during stitching.  This keeps everything flat and stable.  If you want more information about those two things, read My favorite tools for machine applique.

  1. I started quilting my senior year in high school in “Design and Decorate” class with the help of my mom and teacher, who both had been quilters for many years. I have been quilting for 9 years now since I learned. It makes me so sad that many of these classes are not in school anymore because otherwise I might not have taken the time to learn.

  2. Hi
I’ve been quilting since the 70’s so for quite awhile. Boy has things changed since then, wow. New books, pattern galore, fabrics and threads just to mention a few. And all the changes have made it so easy and fun these days. Thanks for the chance at a great prize!!

  3. I have been sewing for around 40 years (since high school) but I started quilting around 20 years ago. Love it!

  4. Been quilting for about 12 years with an 8 year break in between when we built a house and I got sucked into the garden. Now I’m back at my sewing machine, thankfully.

  5. I’ve been quilting since the 80’s, thanks to Georgia Bonesteel. I loved her quilting shows, and have almost all of her books, too.
I love your applique. It’s just perfect!

  6. I did a quilt as a teen with my mother but the one I am working on now is my first on my own.

  7. I have been sewing since teenage years, then seriously from 1962, when we were married, but quilting really started in 2005, so 11 years is not a long time to be doing this, And there have been many interruptions along the way, parents-in-law living with us, one then the other passing away, husband with seriously ill health, and this week I decided that anything standing in the way of quilting needs to be toppled over. Your words on the applique are so helpful, and you chose lovely fabrics for it all. Another super give-away. Greetings from down south in New Zealand.

  8. Julie your block is super cute! Thanks for the tutorial and the chance to win Aurifil thread! I haven’t been quilting all that long…maybe 3 or 4 yrs now, but I’ve been sewing since I was very young.

  9. My first quilt was four blocks in 1993 that I made in a class when we were stationed in Germany. I had two little ones and didn’t know how to quilt it so it went into a box until earlier this year. I would say I started quilting though 3 years ago..

  10. About 14 years. Didn’t know what quilting was until I came to the US in 1999 but I always loved sewing. Started watching Simply Quilts on HGTV and I was hooked.

  11. I have been only quilting since May 2013. My daughter gave me a sewing machine for mother’s day, and told me to learn how to quilt. I was taking care of my sick husband at the time and could not get out. (he passed in 4/2014) I watched tutorials and taught myself on how to do this. My daughter got me the material or I would ordered online. Your block is really pretty and cant wait to get mine started.

  12. I’ve been quilting for sew many years now that I can’t really remember when I started. I started sewing when I was 5 and I am now 65. I put the bobbin case in backwards and my mom had to call the Singer sewing man out to get the case out of the machine. Machines weren’t as portable back then as they are now days. I’ve made quilts for 6 of my 7 grandchildren and numerous other quilts that are waiting to be quilted. It’s hard for me to decide how to quilt them. I know I’ve been quilting for at least 20 years and have enjoyed every moment. Thanks for the opportunity to win this thread. Just love anything that has to do with sewing.

  13. I learned how to piece in Katie Pasquini’s class back when she taught in Old town Eureka. Makng a sampler quilt for my first baby 37 years ago- it is a form of sewing that I enjoy consistently, but am not prolific — thanks for the give away, good luck to all!!

  14. I have been sewing for a few years but didn’t start quilting until this year and I’m totally in love!

  16. I started in 1979! 37 years now, don’t ask how big my stash is. Love trying newblocks & techniques!

  17. I’ve been quilting for 22 years in between raising kids and working. I love how it relaxes me and now I’m teaching my daughter to quilt. 🙂

  18. I’m a new quilter…almost a year now. I heard about Row by Row last year (I’d been sewing clothes for 2 years) and my daughter thought it sounded like fun (she’s full grown). She got me to find a quilt store when we were driving through Virginia…and I liked it much more than I thought I would…I was even first to turn in a quilt at a store who’s row I used even though I started late. I’ve since done a 110″ long table runner with free motion and have several WIPs at the moment. I’m hooked!

  19. I am Linda Thompson from Kentucky. I have always wanted to piece quilts and now since my children are grown and grand children are all above eight I find more time to sew. I have always sewn since my high school years in the 1960’s, mainly garments and also in college making my clothes during that time. I now for the last ten years love to piece quilts. One of my quilts did win ribbons in two different quilt shows. I will enjoy working on this project and try to improve my skills as I find I learn something with each quilt. Hope to win the thread and start using it. Thank you.

  20. I began quilting shortly after I retired in 2000. I had never had much interest in sewing but the quilting bug bit me hard. Now I feel like a day is wasted if I don’t get an opportunity to sew at least a little. I love to learn new techniques and have tried most. Thank you for providing opportunities to learn new things..

  21. I’ve been quilting for 9 years…ever since we moved to a remote area with 10-month-long winters 🙂

  22. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful quilt with your readers! I have been quilting for over 25 years, but sewing for many more years than that. I did my first embroidery piece at four years old. I ilearned my love of the needle from my mom. She made bridal gowns all her life, but now at 83 she does Christening gowns for babies in the family.

  23. Oh my gosh, I guess I’ve been quilting about 40 years. I used to make quilts for my dolls and I’m 50 now. Where did the time go?

  24. My mother taught me to quilt on a Singer treadle machine, about 35 yrs ago. About a year ago I got back into it, I am really enjoying the journey.

  25. I’ve only been quilting for two years but I’m definitely hooked! I just finished a queen sized for my daughter’s wedding next month which is the 8th I’ve done so far.

  26. I have been quilting for 20 some years. Started when my kids were little. But i feel i still have so much to learn.

  27. Not very long- 5 years, and while my skills are still pretty limited, I do have a lovely fabric collection!

  28. Although I have been sewing all my life (literally, my mom was a seamstress) and I have made a couple of quilts as wedding presents for close friends. I’m just officially start quilting about 2 years ago.

  29. I’ve been quilting for approximately 27 years. I have been sewing since I was in junior high. Shortly after my third son was born, I realized they would not wear clothes sewn by me for very long and I needed to come up with another avenue for my sewing adventures. I found quilting and have never looked back!

  30. I’ve only been quiltingfor a couple of years, though I’ve been sewing for over 40. I thought it was too difficult for me! I’m very happy to Have been so completely wrong!

  31. I have been quilting for about 4 years although I have been sewing for many years. Your block is really pretty and I love your choice of fabric.

  32. I took a quilting class in 2002. I took it because I wanted to learn to applique. When we did the applique block, I hated it! Simply because I couldn’t do it. I was frustrated! I have been quilting, but no applique. I am seriously going to try to applique this block! I love quilting & this site. Thanks for all your help and suggestions!

  33. I tried quilting once in the ’70″s became frustrated and gave it up – no project finished. Then I took a class on Eleanor Burns log cabin quilt in a day in the early 2000’s and finished all the blocks but never put the top together. I still have them all along with the material to finish the quilt. Then in 2013 I decided what I really like to do is long arm quilt and piecing is just a must do to get to that step. So … now I piece when I must and long arm for myself and others. I love the finished quilts but piecing is NOT my favorite part LOL

I’m grateful to you for doing the teaching and giving us all hints and how to’s one can never learn to much and it is amazing how yourself and others have made piecing easier for those like myself!

It never ceases to amaze me how one block can be so different depending on the color scheme and who puts it together. I love yours.

Thanks for the opportunity to enter the giveaway.

  34. I have been quilting off and on for about 30 years. Love your colors on your block. The flowers are so pretty.

  35. Love your pretty block! I have been quilting for about twenty years and it’s my favourite pastime. Thank you for the chance to win.

  36. Love how your block turned out so pretty! I have been quilting about 25 years my first quilt was totally hand cut with scissors and card board templates and was hand pieced and hand quilted since my sewing machine was a piece of junk! Thank goodnes for rotary cutters and newer sewing machines but I still hand quilt all my quilts and have enjoyed doing embroidery since I was a teenager.

  37. HELLO, I have sewn garments all my life and just in the last ten years or so started quilting>mostly Baby Charity Quilts for our local Group of UnWed Moms. Love quilting, machine+hand! Thanks for sharing!

  38. I have been quilting since 1993. I still have my first quilt, a lap size quilt as you go “masterpiece”

  39. I’ve been quilting more than 25 years. I’ve been sewing since I was 4, though. I love it! Great block.

  40. I took my first class about 15 years ago. but then life got in the way and I am now trying to get back to it.

  41. This is a really cute block! I have been quilting for about 5 years now (and still learning). Thanks!

  42. Thanks for asking about my quilting life. I’ve known since childhood that one day I would quilt. both of my grandmothers were quilters as were all four of my great-grandmothers and who knows how many more generations.

As the oldest grandchild on both sides, I’ve ended up with a glory stack of quilts made by my mother, Grandma Hatfield, Grandma Hoffman, Great-Grandma Chrestensen, Great-Grandma Bryan and Great-grandma “Little Mary” Foster. These women were all in either Iowa or Missouri. The great-grandmothers were born between 1852 and 1874. The grandmothers were born in Iowa in 1896 and 1898, my mother was born in 1922.

Would you believe that while I sewed doll clothes at age 6 and clothes for myself by high school, and then by the 1970s was teaching sewing, machine embroidery and other embellishment on the sewing machine for a community college — and STILL I pieced my first block just two months ago — at age 71. I waited until I was finally retired. I LOVE it, I’m obsessed with it. I have 45 pieced blocks finished, plus some that are appliqued and others that are embroidered. AND I’m having a wondrous time learning quilting techniques AND learning all the new trick and tips for quilting and sewing that have magically appeared in the past 30 or 40 years.

Thanks again for all you do

    Judy King

  43. I started my first quilt 9 years ago, I finished it about a year and a half ago!! I did start and complete other quilting projects in between though:)

Thanks for sharing your tips and for the chance to enter.

  44. I am a beginner, I made one quilt several years ago to give to my son. It was a very poor attempt at creating something for him to remember his time at college.. I sewed the center pieces together where one was flipped upside down. So now it doesn’t matter which direction he puts it on his bed. So, this will be my first real quilt.

  45. I started when Eleanor burns was doi g her lbs quilt in a day series. Could be 15 or 20 years ago. Love it. Today I’m working on the Janet stone svc quilt that you did video s for. Love it.

  46. Excellent tips and tricks! Thanks for sharing. I’m always amazed at how quickly the comment section fills up when people see the words ‘give away’ in the title. I’ve been building quilts for an estimated 35 years now, and I’m still learning something new all the time! Have a wonderful day! XO

  47. I made my first quilt when I was 12. I made hand embroidered blocks and sashed them and put them together and then put a blanket in the middle and a backing and then hand tied it and bonded it. It was a baby quilt for a family member. I have made quite a few like that until about 2 years ago when I went and took my first beginners quilting class and learned to piece and now I am hooked. I am now 63 and loving quilting.

  48. I made my first quilt 38 years ago when expecting my first baby! It was a disaster-but made with love!

  49. Actually I started a quilt when I was 18 using scraps from my mom’s stash. I had no formal training. In the early 80’s I took quilting classes. My teaching career took over and I did not sew again until I retired 11 years ago. I became involved again by taking classes, attending classes and workshops, and now am enjoying learning more through blogs and classes on PBS.

  50. I love this quilt! And I have been quilting for almost 7 yrs. now. Thank you for the chance to win.

  51. Your block is beautiful, Julie! I started my first quilt 24 years ago, but have been a serious quilter for the last 9 years.

  52. I have been quilting for 30 years off and on. Enjoying that part of the aging process that leaves you with more time to spend at home doing what I want.

  53. I started hand sewing a quilt when I was in my teens then stopped for about 20 years. In the 1990’s I did a beginner machine patchwork class and haven’t stopped quilting since!

  54. Thank you for the clear instructions. I’ve been sewing for many years and always wanted to quilt but never knew how to start. When I realized that the computer could be my teacher I dove in and am now officially addicted…. so about 14 years…

  55. I made my first quilt ( cot sized) when my first baby was born some 40 years ago … no lessons, just guess-work, using material from my favourite summer dresses ( which no longer fit or were no longer fashionable)
Then ‘life’ took over but I never lost the I’ll get ’round tuit’ again one day wish.
Then about 4 years ago a friend showed me an ipad cover she had made from brightly coloured strips – so simple but just beautiful – and where she had been taught. The Granary
I went along there and found everyone ( especially one lady – Julie) to be so understanding and patient with my tentative steps to learning properly.
Life’s demands continue, as does my learning ( but that is a little more slowly) but my emthusiasm and determination are undeterred.

  56. I learned to quilt in 2006 but never really did anything with it until my sister passed away last March. I took to my sewing room as a comfort place and practically haven’t left since! So I guess I really have only been quilting since March 2015!

  57. I was first taught to quilt in 2002. I just recently, last 3 years, been relearning this fun past-time. I love the feel of fabric and love BOM because you get gratification with each block.
    tracinecharest at gmail dot com

  58. I learned when I was about 10 years old from my grandmother and mother. I really didn’t get interested in quilting until I was about 20 years old. So it has been 40 plus years.

  59. I made my first quilt, a queen sized Cathedral Window, in the days before rotary cutters, completely hand-stitched in 1971-72 (that’s 45 years ago). I did miscellaneous sewing projects including clothing, curtains, and a couple more quilts until 2003 when I began quilting in ernest after learning about rotary cutters and other modern tools!

  60. While reading comments posted, I was reminded that I had made a quilt for my expected baby, thirty-seven years ago. I would have said I’ve been quilting for about twenty years but it’s been much longer. Well, I am thoroughly addicted. Your appliqué is beautiful.

  61. Hi Julie
I’ve only quilted for a couple of years. Still just a beginner. I wish I had more time to quilt but truly enjoy the time I get. I love your block, I think this is going to be a fun BOM.

  62. I have been quilting since 1980 when I learned to hand piece. WoW. 36 years. Where did they go.

  63. Think it was about 15 years ago when I made my first quilt. Quilted a couple small projects after that. Life got busy and I didn’t quilt again until about 7 years ago. Love it! Would say I am a piecing and do Free-motion quilting on a domestic machine. Just starting to learn applique. Julie, you are one of the bloggers I have followed for some time. Love all the tips you share! Thank you!

  64. I started quilting 30 years ago and quilted for probably 10- 15 years. Mainly I was doing quilted clothing which was all the rage back then. I did the Fairfield Fashion Show 3 different years and did commission pieces for sale. Selling was not for me and the fitting of garments became stressful and I walked away from quilting all together. I joined the Splendid Sampler a few months ago and it has reawakened my passion for quilting.

  65. I’ve been thinking about quilting for a long time, but only actually started about 2 years ago. Thank you for your tips.

  66. Julie, this first block is a clincher for me…you’ve got me hooked and excited to begin! Interesting that you used a bias tape maker to create the stems. I have one of those gadgets in my closet, but haven’t used it YET!! Now I have a reason. My first quilt was made when I was in college in 1982. I had no idea what I was doing and it’s just a simple patchwork with yarn ties. It’s been used a million times over the years for picnics, sporting events, camping and cuddling. Jump to 2014 and I picked up the quilting bug again. It’s on my mind all the time and I’m always thinking about what to make next. So, in total, I’d say I’ve been quilting for 3 years (counting that quilt way back in the disco era). duchick at mchsi dot com

  67. I’ve been quilting for about 7 years. Beautiful block! And thanks for the chance to win 🙂

  68. I made my first quilt for my first child at age 23 and my second quilt for my second child at age 27. I didn’t quilt again until 2009 at age 55 when I retired. I haven’t stopped and have no plans to. As long as I can see and my fingers still work I am going to quilt.

  69. 1. Love your colors.
    2. I have been quilting 7 years now. And I am still learning, and loving the learning.
Quilters are the best people on earth, so giving and supporting.

  70. I’ve been sewing since I was 16 years old but it didn’t occur to me to ever try quilting. I happened upon a youtube video of Jenny Doan making a lattice quilt and fell in love with it. I’ve been quilting for the last three years and can’t get enough! I’ve learned a great deal and I love trying new methods. I still have an affinity for the vintage patterns too. Its amazing to me how differently we do things now, and yet the old patterns still seem very new.

  71. I am in year 55. My grandmother started me when I was 5 years old. I love everything about quilting. Piecing, cutting, sewing, quilting, looking at threads and fabrics and patterns. I love the old and the new, but the machine embroidery has really caught my eye.

  72. I have been sewing for about 50 years. When my kids were little I made some of their clothes. I started quilting about 25 years ago. Right now I am doing a lot more fabric collecting than sewing. Hopefully I will have more time to sew soon.

  73. I have been “collecting” fabrics a lot longer than I have been quilting!!
But seriously, I have been quilting since about 2001.
I would love for you to stop by and visit my blog!

  74. I have been quilting a year, after a small start thirty something years ago. I love the colors of your block. Thank you for all the tips.

  75. I have been a sewer for over 60 years, have an abundance of cotton pieces that I cannot part with, so have started to use them in quilting for the last 10 years. With your help and others on the wen,I have learned to actually put together proper items. I enjoy charity jilts as a way diminish my stash. I have recently obtained my first spool of Aurifil thread from my quilting group, what a great addition to my knowledge. Am going to purchase Aurifil exclusively from now on. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and connections.

  76. I quilted when my children were small, about 25 years ago. Then I got busy and put it down for 10-15 years. I picked it back up, full steam ahead, about 5 years ago. I cannot imagine not quilting now. I am enjoying your blog. This block is beautiful and I really appreciate all your tips.

  77. I have been quilting on and off for about 30 years. I also make quilt using machine embroidery which is a whole other ball game. Would love to win and try out these threads as I have never used them.

  78. Julie, I love your block and blog!!!!!!!! I have been quilting since 2002 – my fun, relaxing and sometimes challenging therapy!!!!!!

  79. I have been quilting for about 2 years now; started with pre-cuts, made a few quilts; only FMQ some using Walking Foot; little with FMQ, need lots more practice. Learning so much from so many designers with the BOM and quilt-alongs. So much to learn. Have been using only Aurifil thread; love it.

  80. Thanks for the great tips on how to make this block! I’ve been quilting for about 30 yeas, and made my first quilt as a teenager. It was made with corduroy squares, backed with a bed sheet, and tied with yarn. My dog is still enjoying it in her bed.

  81. I started to teach myself to quilt in 2013…it was a very frustrating year. I still often become frustrated because I make so many mistakes and know of no experienced quilters in the area to help me. Thank goodness for your blog and for other online blogs that help me so much! I have only finished two small quilts in 3 years but I am determined to finish one quilt this year! I do love to sew, which does take time away from quilting. Wish I had more time to hone my skills!

  82. If you count patchwork quilts that are tied with yarn, then I have been quilting for years, at least 40. If you are talking about piecing a quilt and then quilt by hand or by machine, I am working on my fourth year. Either way, I love putting fabrics together, the creativity and watching an idea come to life.

  83. I took a lap quilting class in the late 70’s and did a few things Made baby quilts for my children in the 80’s and now baby quilts for my grandchildren in the last 5 years and trying to do other quilting as well

  84. I’ve been sewing for a long time but am fairly new to quilting. I made a rag quilt and a quilt for my grandson. I am so inspired by the quilts in magazines and on the web. I have dreams and goals of becoming a quilter.

  85. I have been quilting for about 25 years. I am not a “perfect” quilter but I enjoy it and find it satisfies my creativity.

  86. I have been quilting for at least 20 years. I have been sewing since I was preteen. I love playing with fabrics and colors.

  87. My beautiful daughter introduced me to quilting about four years ago. I really enjoy BOM’s and all the various blocks that are put together to make lovely quilts and projects. Really excited about Maggie’s First Dance BOM project. Thank you for your generosity in sharing the patterns and tips to make this easier.

  88. Love your block! So pretty! How helpful your tips were, Thanks!

Awesome giveaway Aurifil! Thanks for a chance to win!

  90. I’ve been quilting off and on since the 70s. I am tr ying to carve out more time and more space for my projects.

  91. I began quilting probably 25 years, when I looked for something to relax me after,a hard work day.

  92. The first thing I quilted 15 years ago, was a rail fence lap quilt which a good friend was kind enough to show me how to do. That was it, and I was hooked! I still have it sitting on a rocker in one of our guest rooms.

  93. I started quilting in the 1980’s then took a break. I finally got back into it and have been quilting. now for the past 10 years!

  94. Wonderful block.
I have been quilting for about 18 years, I think. Love to sew and have been sewing since junior high Home Ec. class.

  95. About 5 years, of and on, is all I’ve been doing quilting. But I love it, and do something in the craft room all the time –

  96. My mum started quilting in the 1990’s and got me hooked. I was a teenager then and loved to play with patterns and colors (and still do).

  97. I remember doing some patchwork pillows years ago but really got started in 2009 when I took a class at local quilt shop and made a 9 patch quilt for queen-sized bed. One way to stay busy while going through a very difficult time with a nice result (finished finally 2010). Enjoying comments and all the helpful tips and ideas that are being presented!

  98. I have been quilting for 30 yrs and also doing other crafts. Nothing makes me happier than to give a handmade gift to someone you love.

  99. My Mom taught me to sew as a child. I started quilting when I was in my 30’s and then took a break due to a busy career in computers. Then, I picked it up again a few years ago.

  100. I have quilting since I was 11, so about 42 years! Love your blog, Julie! I have learned lots of great tips from you! Thank you for the giveaway!

  101. I am totally new to quilting. I have been sewing since I was a chld, but never got into quilting until a few weeks ago. I would love to be able to buy all the beautiful fabrics I keep seeing, but I’m just going to use what I have and see what happens.

  102. i’ve been quilting way longer than I would like to let on!! LOL I do enjoy your construction tips – thanks for sharing!!

  103. I learned to embroider when I was about 10 years old…I started quilting in 1976, America’s Bicentennial year, when a free “learn to quilt” class was offered. I’ve been hand-quilting ever since. About 3 years ago I realized I’d never be able to finish everything I wanted to by hand so I started quilting on my home sewingmachine and loved it. Now I have a longarm machine and feel like I’ve found my purpose in life…lol.

  104. I have only been quilting for a few months. I looked at a LOT of tutorials before I got up the nerve to actually begin!

  105. I have been quilting for about 4 years now. Your videos for the A to Z for Ewe and Me gave me the confidence and skills to attempt all sorts of projects. Thank you.

  106. I guess that I’ve been quilting ‘for real’ for about 10 – 12 years. I did make a comforter for my college dorm room, that was technically a quilt, but it was such a hot mess that I can’t count it!

  107. I made one of those sampler quilts that were popular in about 1981-82, then I made a quilt for my sister when she married and that’s all it took for me to put aside other hobbies. I dabbled in making Christmas ornaments, primitive pin keepers, cross stitch projects, but always came back to making quilts. I love doing hand applique, so this project will be fun!

  108. Hi Julie,
I started quilting in 1998 after retiring. I’ve traded places with my young students . Everyday I seem to learn something new about quilting. I look forward to every new day with my sewing and quilting family. I won’t be a chatting Kathy on your blog but I will treasure your tips, guidance and encouragement . Thx

  109. Thanks for the tutorial! Extra help is always appreciated. I started seriously collecting fabric 🙂 about 15 years ago. It took me awhile to begin to call myself a quilter. I started by making some recycled denim throws with machine embroidered blocks in them. They made into fun and personalized gifts (e.g. “peek-a-boo” embroidered on a scrap of fabric behind a working zipper).

  110. I have been quilting off and on since 1988, but have seriously been working on it the last 3 years. I’ve been taking classes and learning from a great bunch of ladies. We all have a wealth of information and ideas to share.

  111. Just love this block and your chosen fabrics are scrumptious. Even though I have been quilting 35+ yrs, I have never done machine applique. This small project is my chance. dhardenburg at prodigy dot net

  112. I have been quilting for about 50 years but have never learned as much in all my days as in the later years with the internet. thanks

  113. I have been quilting for a little over a year now. I am loving these quilt alongs because I am learning SOOO much in the process!!! Thank you all!

  114. I’ve only been quilting 5 years but been a fabric lover for 55+! Thank you so much for the applique ideas. Never thought to use my bias tape maker for stems! Genius!

  115. I’m quilting, slowing making my way over from cross stitch and embroidery. My sewing machine is still packed away, but I’ve done some EPP and hand piecing. Thanks for the opportunity.

  116. I have been quilting for about 24 years with huge gaps in between. The gaps were filled with raising children and sewing clothes! Thanks!

  117. Julie, you are so talented! I’m so glad I discovered your blog through The Quilt Show two or three years ago. You are amazing. I
I have been quilting for about ten years, but due to time constraints, I have only made a few quilts. I AM going to do Maggie’s First Dance. Heading out tomorrow to get fabric.

  118. I am not sure how long I have been quilting; I just knew that sooner or later I would be a quilter when my grandmother showed me some of the family quilts. No one was currently doing any quilting but I just knew I would do it someday. In addition to making quilts of my own, I have over 2 dozen antiques. Two have been dated as being from the 1890’s.

  119. I have been quilting around five years. My husband taught me to sew 20 years ago and I hated it, I would only do it when it was a necessity. Then fast forward 15 years and I discovered quilting and became obsessed. p.s. I still hate to sew clothing.

  120. I began quilting 16 years ago but wasn’t able to do much until I retired 10 years ago. Wish I had started sooner but I was doing garment sewing for myself and my daughters. Love, love, love quilting

  121. I have barely dabbled for about 18 years then last July had a renewed intetest and have been doing a lot more.

  122. I made a denim quilt two years ago and then nothing until January of this year. So addicted now. I love your color choices and clear directions.

  123. I have been quilting for just a short time~ I love your tips. I will be following along with your progress for this to be a successful quilt form me!

  124. I’ve been quilting for approx 10 years, my favorite part is raw edge fusible applique. Love the creativity it allows!

  125. I made two baby quilts out of Fortrel fabrics many years ago; however, it was about 14 years ago when I changed from sewing to quilting. That first class was on fused machine applique; and I’ve enjoyed that technique ever since. I love your fabric choices, and look forward to selecting fabrics from my stash to see where this journey takes me.

  126. I started my first quilt top in 1985 and it took about 6 years to complete (4th baby born before she was due and that explains that). My second quilt was my first finish and it was begun in October 1994 and finished in February 1995 – a raffle quilt that was unrelated to the first top. Lots of starts and finishes since then too.

  127. I started to quilt in the begining of 1992 . It was a sampler and I did mine in 30’s print ,it turned out ok.

  128. I have been enjoying quilting for MANY years. I seem to move in and out of craft interests so it”s difficult to say an exact number.

  129. I have been quilting for about 9 years now. I started taking quilt classes about a year before I was set to retire and once I retired, I have been having so much fun as I continue to learn more and more techniques involved with quilting.

  130. I started quilting in 2009. I have been sewing for about 50 years but did not start quilting until later but I love it now. Thanks for the tips for making this block. I hope to get started soon, maybe today.

  131. I have been working on becoming a quilter for about a year now. I have found I am a starter not a finisher. It is the perfectionist in me I am afraid. I am so thrilled with you detailed instruction. Being self taught ( via the net) these hints are priceless. Thank you so much

  132. Well, technically, I haven’t started, yet. Maggie’s First Dance is going to be my maiden voyage!! I’m super excited to see how things turn out! 🙂

  133. Love your block! I have been quilting for around 20 years. It started out as a hobby that I did when I found time. But, it worked it self into a “real” hobby in the last few years before I retired and now that I am retired, I can really focus on it.

  134. I have been learning to quilt for 15 years! Yes I am still learning and it is fun!! I love your colors in your block, and the Applique! Thank you for showing how to do the piecing and applique that helps me out a bunch as I like to “see” how it is done!

  135. I have been quilting for about six years and love it. Thank you for making this an international giveaway

  136. I have been quilting for almost two years. Just bookmarked your applique information. Thanks for sharing!

  137. I’ve been quilting for 2 years and am really hooked. Loved the piecing, but struggled with quilting on my home machine. Took a long arm lesson at my LQS and fell in love with it! I have much to learn, but love every minute of it.

  138. I made my first quilt when I had my 1st child at age 27. I am now 73, so I have been quilting for a long time.

  139. I’ve been quilting for 6 months. I took my first class last December and finished that quilt. I have taken a couple more classes and those quilts are about half finished, mostly because I moved recently and that was time consuming and my new sewing room isn’t quite set up yet, but will be this week – yeah! I am looking forward to making this quilt, I was going to embroider it, but seeing everyone’s options I may have to rethink that.

  140. I’ve only been quilting since November, so I am a real novice quilter, but it sure has turned into an addiction really quickly! I am loving all the learning and fun I am having with it, and the wonderful quilting communities, both on-line and folks near me!

  141. I’ve been quilting since 1989, so that makes about 27 years & still love it as much as I did when I started.

  142. Love the colors in you block. Lately I’m partial to turquoise! I started sewing as a Brownie, probably around the age of seven. My first project was embroidery which I still have. After that I took a class at Singer Sewing Store to fulfill requirements for the “Dressmaking” badge. It was a disaster, but didn’t discourage me. I went on the make most of my clothes, since clothing at the time didn’t fit my long-waisted slim body. I went to Catholic School, so I didn’t need too many clothes, having to wear a uniform daily. I guess my first quilting project was much later when I was teaching Home Economics and I sewed together the embroidery stitch sample I had taught my students to make and then I sewed it together to make a quilt which I presented to the Superintendent of the school district.

  143. I just started quilting a couple of months ago and finished my first quilt top yesterday!!! Thanks for the tutorials in this post. It’s really helpful for those of us who are new to quilting!

  144. I’ve been quilting since late 2011. I tried a simple jelly roll race quilt to see if I would actually finish a quilt before I invested in all of the tools. I loved it!

  145. I really like your fabric choice. It has a kind of soft colored-pencil look, which seems to go with the style of the applique so well!
I’ve been quilting for about four years and I hope I can continue for many, many more!

  146. I have been quilting about 8 years, I think. I have sewn since 7th grade. When the quilting bug hit, all other sewing went out the window.

  147. I’ve been quilting since I was about 16 or over 20 years! Wow, that’s longer than I realized! I love to sew just about anything! Just started learning more about free motion quilting. Great info on nesting seams, your points are perfection!

  148. I have been quilting since 1996. No one is my family ever quilted and I wanted to learn how and to make a cat quilt. I took a beginner’s quilting class. Still have that first quilt. Can’t believe the colors that I bought. It is mine but I sure would have used different coordinating colors. It took me 2 years to quilt that cat quilt. Ran out of the background fabric and was put on hold until as fabric store could find me that fabric. The lady that quilted it for me told me to place this quilt in our fair. Never even imagined on winning a ribbon. But I did – first place! This quilt meant so much to me. I had a black and white cat who has since passed away. It was done in her memory. Could not believe that I would ever win. Make me cry. Anyways, thank you for being a part of this Aurifil giveaway and the chance to maybe even win. Gotta love Aurfil and can’t wait for Block 2.

  149. I like your color/fabric choices for this block.
I have been quilting small projects for around 5 years, but have only made my first bed sized quilt this year (still finishing the quilting).

  150. I sewed cute little outfits for my daughters when they were very little; they are now 44 and 38. I took up sewing again when my granddaughters were born (sewing Halloween costumes), however, about 10 years ago and fell in love with quilting. I now belong to a Quilt Guild.

  151. That is a tough question. I remember sitting under my great gradmothers quilting frame when I was very little, I don’t know how old. Because of she and my grandmother, I learned to piece and to embrodiery on quilts. My first memeory of me quilting is when I was in Brownies (maybe 6) and I’m almost 60 now. As I’ve gotten older, Quilting has become more and more important in my life, as a stress reliever while working, and now that I’m retired, as a passion. I don’t quilt every day, and I get down right cranky.

  152. Wow!! So many comments already!! Everyone loves aurifil! ! I have been quilting for about 20 years and sewing since I was 8 or 9. I absolutely adore handwork – embroidery, applique, EPP, hand piecing. Thank you so much for the giveaway!

  153. I have been quilting for about 4 years, took my first class at the Granary. Am still a beginner but loving it. Thank you for the a chance.

  154. I’ve been quilting for 20 years, starting only when I registered my 10-yr old daughter for a quilting class. She actually learned before I did!

  155. I’ve been quilting over 30 years! And I’ve loved every minute of it. Your applique is lovely, so glad you don’t do heavy satin stitch!

  156. I started quilting just before my daughter was born 22 years ago. Love your block! Great fabric choice. Thanks for the giveaway.

  157. I’ve been quilting for 5 years but never tried appliqué. I’m looking forward to trying it

  158. I’ve been quilting for 37 years. I can remember that since that is how old my son is, and also when I made my first quilt. I really enjoy your blog, especially the Sunday issues with all the ideas from other blogs.

  159. Hi Julie!
I’ve been quilting now for 3 months! took a basic patchwork class then and joined a group. Just about to quilt my 1st ‘big’ quilt, hope to finish by end of week.
Love catching video help and you make straight forward videos I can follow.
    Thanks
    Lynne West Wales UK!

  160. I have been quilting since 1984! Even after all this time, a chance to make a new quilt excites me. I’m looking forward to this one!

  161. I have been quilting for one year (but have tried to do it for many years but always thought it would be too hard-even though I have been sewing since 1970. Haven’t completed many quilts (have several started). I am always trying new things (in quilting) and I think that is why I haven’t completed many quilts. Love quilting and your block.

  162. I have been quilting for about 3 years. Hooked for sure. I think the part of quilting I am best at is the gathering of the fabric. Do you ever have enough?

  163. I started quilting about 15 years ago. The first quilt I finished was in honor of my friend’s unexpected miracle baby, who is going to be in 8th grade next year.

  164. I’ve been quilting for 15 years. It’s hard to remember what I did, how I looked at the world around me, before I saw it through the lens of fabric and quilt patterns.

  165. I started quilted about 15 years but life took a turn and hadn’t quilted in many years. Then a new friend came in my life and started quilting again and have not stopped and learning something new all the time. Made many quilts since.

  166. My mother does a lot of quilting. I usually just work on hand embroidery, but am sparking an interest in quilting now. Love your colors for the block!

  167. I have been making and tying quilts for over 50 years but I have been piecing and machine quilting, which I consider the real beginning of my quilting experience about 6 years now. Love the blocks.

  168. Hi,
My interest in quilting started when I was in college, back in the late 70’s/early 80’s. You can never imagine the thrill I had when I was introduced to the rotary cutter, mat and ruler!! What exhilaration!!! No looking back – I was hooked for life!

  169. I have been quilting off and on since the age of 5, when I would help my grandmother with her quilts. She helped me make my first doll quilt. I have completed a large number of quilts that I have given away and do a lot of art quilts and thread painting. I love doing non-traditional quilts and trying new things that take me out of my comfort level.

Thanks for the opportunity to win some of these wonderful threads. All the best,

Terri at the Drake’s Nest in Palm Bay, FL

  170. Hi! What a sweet pattern! I have been quilting since the 1980s, but I find there are always new things to learn. I’m enjoying teaching the art of quilting to my granddaughter.

  171. Julie, I’ve been quilting seriously for about 16 years – after I retired. What fun! I do enjoy your web site and have done several projects you have introduced. I am looking forward to Maggies First Dance BOM. I am doing two other BOM projects right now so hope I can keep up.

  172. I’ve only been quilting since last September and I absolutely love it. This is the first BOM I’ve attempted – hope I can keep up!!!!

  173. I’ve been back to seriously quilting for a year. About seven years ago, I dabbled briefly. I’m doing this qal, too. Excited to get started. I just did my first appliqué blocks last month and loved it.

  174. I have been quilting now for 6 months! Wow times flies! I love it and I’m hoping one of my girls will follow in my footsteps as I am the first in the family to quilt or even see for that matter.

  175. I have made two quilts so far for my youngest children, they turned out really well so now going to attempt a king size for my bed – just trying to get my hubby to make me a frame so that I can turn my domestic sewing machine into a long arm!

  176. I love your blog! Always especially enjoy Sew Thankful Sunday! Looking forward to Maggie’s First Dance QAL. I have been quilting about 12 years.

  177. Your block turned out great. That’s a good idea to use the bias tape for the stems. The straight fused stems don’t bend very well. I will try that.

  178. I have been quilting for about 15 years. I love your blog, thank you in advance for the tips to make the first block. Your colors in the block are gorgeous.

  179. I first tried piecing and hand quilting 14 years ago. I put my needle down for awhile but about 4 years ago I was bitten by the bug again. There are just way too many beautiful fabrics out there to not have a reason to enjoy them.

  180. I love looking over all the blocks you make. You do wonderful work. I am a fairly new quilter. I became interested in it about 2 years ago. I had one quilt finished and took it to be quilted, the quilter told me I didn’t line my squares up and she couldn’t believe I had them so uneven. That was a wasted $100.00. I have started another quilt, and am really trying to get all of my seams straight. Hopefully it will be better than last one.

    1. wow that was harsh. I hope she at least gave you some help for the next one. There are tutes all over the web for just about every type of quilting you want to do. Check them out they really can help.

  181. I’ve only been quilting for 3 years. I always wanted to but it looked so hard and I didn’t think I could do it. But was I surprised at how easy (compared to what I thought) and fun it is. You just do it one step at a time. I do love the fabric you are using it’s beautiful. Thank you for the chance to win!

  182. I’ve been quilting for almost ten years….ever since I retired. Your fabric choices are so nice…thanks for the giveaway

  183. I began quilting in January. So, I’ve pinned your tutorial – thank you. I’ve been a little concerned about these blocks specifically and now I have directions to practice with!

  184. I began quilting a year ago when I decided to make my daughter a Tshirt quilt 🙂
Your block is so pretty! Thank you for sharing and for the chance to win!

  185. I’ve been (more or less seriously) quilting for about five years and can’t imagine what else I would be doing with all my free time. Thanks for a great giveaway!

  186. What a gorgeous first block! I can`t wait to sew this block and I look forward to the other ones.

  187. I started quilting over 30 years ago. I did take some time off when I started working full time. 13 years ago, I started again when I quit working.

  188. I think of myself as a new quilter – but I guess I have been at it for around 8 years. Not that I have completed many quilts.

  193. I have been quilting (on and off) for 30 years. Now I am retired I spend a lot of my time in the sewing room and am currently doing the 365 Challenge, but I am sure I can find time for Maggie’s First Dance as well!

  194. I learned to sew as a child, caught quilting fever about 25 years ago. I took a break with three children, but they are now teenagers and let me sew undisturbed.

  195. For about five years total. Really became obsessed with quilting about 16 months ago when a friend and I joined a local Quilt Club. Loving every moment with my sister quilters 🙂

  196. I have been quilting for just over a year! I’ve got three quilt tops waiting to be long-armed and am working on a couple of EPP’s.

  197. I’ve been sewing since age 5 made my first block at 10. I quit sewing for about 10 years, but I’m back at it now!!
