August UFO link-up

Welcome to the August UFO link-up!  I hope you’re still motivated to whittle away at that list (or pile) of UFO projects.  (The link-up is at the end of this post.)

I had a successful month as far as UFO’s go.  I finished my project for this month AND I finished last month’s quilt, too.  Well, I still need to sew on the binding of that one, but I’m hoping to make a tutorial with it so I need to get my ducks in a row first.

Hello 2016, Goodbye UFO's

This month’s goal was to finish a quilt that was started in 2007 (my guesstimate).  I originally had no pattern, just a block that I wanted to make out of Kaffe Fassett prints and solids.  I made most of the blocks and then lost interest in the whole project and put it in a shoe box.  I remember not liking the colors or design.  Funny how your tastes can change over time.

Nine years later and I love this Autumn Reflections quilt!  It’s a happy ending and I wouldn’t have gotten it done if I didn’t challenge myself to finish a UFO each month.

I used a stencil for most of the quilting.  I’m going to do a separate post about the quilting and the use of stencils.  There’s a lot of information that I can share about that and it deserves its own post.

  1. Julie,
I love your Autumn Reflections Quilt! I can’t wait to see the stenciling tips. Any chance you could come up with the pattern for the piecing as well?
Love your blog Julie and thanks for doing the UFO challenge! I have done pretty well this year in keeping on task and finishing some of my unfinished projects and this was a big part of it. I hope you do it again next year. Good luck with the sewing room organization. My “before” pictures are on par with what you are dealing with.

  2. Yeah!!! I did it! I don’t know why my pictures are sideways, they were straight in the linkup! I’m looking forward to your post on quilting with stencils. I used them with the chalk once, I need more practice!

  3. Your quilt is beautiful. It is nice to hear that I am not the only one that has an unfinished quilt. I love the fabrics, but the pattern doesn’t work for me and it is just sitting on a shelf haunting me. Maybe someday I’ll figure out how to make it into something I’ll love.

Anxious to see tips and tutorials on stencils.

Thanks for keeping me and lots of others motivated 🙂

  4. Your quilt is beautiful!! I am very excited to learn about how you used stencils in your quilting, I have never done that, the results are wonderful in your quilt.

  5. Your quilt is lovely. I am working to finish a project from Oct. of last year, and am hoping to complete it for next month’s drawing. When the time comes, do I email a picture of it to you?

  6. Alas, no UFO’s finished for me this month. But I did get a few out of the closet to “contemplate” finishing them. Does that count? (didn’t think so). Love your fall pattern. The colors are yummy.

  7. thanks once again for an interesting blog. Must say that Im very very interested in the upcoming post on quilting using stencils. I do some quilting using stitch-in-the-ditch along with embroidered quilting designs, using stencils would extend my learning.
Thanks again, have a happy day

  8. I get rather tired of most of my projects by the time I’ve finished them. A few weeks/days and suddenly the project takes on a satisfying feel. I love this quilt from a distance – the close-ups don’t have the same appeal. Maybe that’s why you got disgruntled with it.

  9. Your Autumn Reflections quilt is gorgeous! Love the colors you chose. I found you through Let’s Bee Social.

  10. I can’t pretend I have a lot of UFO’s. I’m a new quilter, started last November, made a lot of placemats for Christmas and other gifts, am working my way through the Spkendid Sampler, which I love, and finally, finaaly made and finished a quilt this month for my suster who is undergoing treatments for cancer. No design, I just picked fabrics with designs that have meaning for her -stars (they are avid amateur astronomers), music, burds, flowers, woods, ocean, etc. Sewed them into 4 patches, and put a lovely soft flowery flannelette on the back. Quilted just with stitch in the ditch along each seam line. She loves it!

  11. I just uploaded my churn dash quilt. I used Anita Grossman Solomon’s monkey wrench pattern which make sewing the blocks easier. I will be donating it to my local quilt guild.

  12. You’re quilt is just gorgeous, Julie! Love that you designed it yourself. To me it is the perfect blending of modern design with a more contemporary feel of the beautiful, warm Kaffe fabrics. Your quilting is so pretty too. The perfect touch to the Autumn quilt. Anticipating your quilting tutorial.

  13. Julie….Love, love, love it!!!! You have such a good eye for color and the design is fun and different. Your quilting is over the top. Can’t wait to see your post on this. There really is no end to your skills and talent. We are so lucky to have you sharing them with us. Thanks Julie!

  14. I feel so much better when I read that you started a project, then lost interest in it because you didn’t like the colors or some other reason. I always feel SO guilty that I spent money on fabric for a project, then put it away. You made me feel less guilty! I love the quilt you finished and think the colors are lovely. Really enjoy your blog and I learn so much. Thank you for being a pillar of the quilting community.

  15. Julie, Beautiful quilt for fall. Love the colors. I’ll be looking forward to your tute on using stencils for quilting. Have a great weekend!!!!!

  16. SOOOO glad you finished this UFO fall quilt! It is lovely, and blessed my heart to see it, and to know you were blessed by finishing it.
