Blog milestones, thank you and a giveaway

I keep track of my blog statistics in a casual way.  They tell me what you like and what you don’t like.  I can see that the holidays generate a lot of activity, especially Christmas.  I try not to lose any sleep when I don’t get too many visits in a week or if a blog post falls flat.

One of my favorite things about blogging is sharing tips and tutorials with you.  I love to teach and it’s apparent that you love to learn.  I’ve been watching the number of email followers grow, and last week I reached over 5,000 followers.  Wow!  I didn’t think I would ever see that number, and I’m honored and privileged to have you all part of my online community.  Many of you follow me through Bloglovin’,  Feedly, and other RSS feeds, too.  There’s so many ways to stay up to date with your favorite bloggers.

The other thing I just  realized (seriously, like 10 minutes ago) is January 28 will mark five years of blogging for me.  That’s another milestone that totally crept up on me.  I’ve come a long way since my first blog post.  There’s always something new to learn and I enjoy the challenge of staying up to date with technology.  It’s constantly changing!

Thank you so much for joining me on this awesome, crafty, quilty, journey.  It’s been a blast and I’m so glad to share this creative space with you.  I’d like to celebrate with two giveaways.  Giveaway is now closed.

The first giveaway is for a Scrappy Project Planner.  If you want to keep track of projects and stay organized, this is the tool for you.  It’s designed by Lori Holt of Bee in My Bonnet and you can read more about it here.

Scrappy project Planner

The second giveaway is for a mystery box of goodies.  I’m going to fill a USPS Priority Mail medium flat rate box with fabric and quilting notions that I’ve pulled from my sewing room.   There will be a nice mix of supplies to add to your stash!

Mystery box giveaway

To enter the giveaway(s), all you need to do is leave me a comment (about anything.)  This giveaway is open to everyone.  You must comment by midnight, PST, January 28, 2017.  Two winners will be chosen randomly on January 29.  CLOSED.

Some people love giveaways and others think they’re a waste of time.  My problem is that I want everyone to be a winner.  So, I’m working on a new tutorial for all of you that will show my appreciation and how full my heart is.  Look for the woven heart tutorial soon.  Here’s a peak at it before adding corner triangles.  It will be perfect for Valentine’s Day, too!

Woven Heart block tutorial coming soon

I always enjoy reading your comments.  Due to the high volume of comments during giveaways, I won’t be able to reply to each of you.  I appreciate your participation and I wish you luck!

  23. Julie, I think I have followed you from the very beginning. I call you my friend in Calif. I’ll never forget your answer to someone’s asking you just what kind of a person are you. It blew my mind when you answered about yourself and how alike we are. I kept reading your answer and said to myself, Oh my goodness, that is me 100%. I love all your tutorials and appreciate all your time you put into your blog. I also followed you on the Quilt show when you had tutorials for the awesome Janet Stone quilt which I made that year. I just noticed to the right of your blog there is a gold medal saying you are 1 of the top 100 quilting blogs. You deserve it. You put so much energy into your tutorials and blog and it shows. 34. Hi Julie,

I found your website by accident a few months ago. Your Winter Seeds quilt was displayed as a sample for your free pattern (thank you by the way). When I saw Winter Seeds, it took my breath away – the design, the colors, the quilting – everything about it is beautiful.

I was also impressed by your workmanship. It is outstanding. I have also enjoyed the inspiration of your blog.

I love to sew but I am basically a beginner in quilting. Your Winter Seeds pattern, wonderful instructions and the enthusiasm you have for quilting was a HUGE factor in my wanting to learn quilting. I really wanted to make Winter Seeds. To my surprise, it actually turned out pretty good.

I wish you many more years of blogging and sharing your love of quilting!

    Thank you very much!!!

  35. Congratulations Julie on the wonderful milestone! I started following you about a year and a half ago. I always look forward to your new posts and tutorials. Congratulations on your amazing following and the accolades so richly deserved.

  65. After such a depressing weekend in the news, getting my mind back to simple things that give me joy–like quilting–is most welcome! I love your blog!

  66. Congrats! The woven heart block is so cute. I’m looking forward to seeing it complete. My maiden name is Hart, so hearts are always catch my eye. I enjoyed your UFO project last year, and while I didn’t officially participate, it did help me to whittle my UFO pile down to just a couple. Although, the new year finds me planning and cutting out quilts like nobody’s business.

I’d love to see an update on how your kitchen, et al., remodeling project is going. We were in the middle of remodeling our kitchen 2 years ago. My husband made the cabinets…purchased rough lumber, designed the cabinets, planed down the wood, and did every singe part. Then also did all the demo, electrical, drywall, mudding, wood flooring installation… everything. The only thing we hired out was doing the knockdown finish on the ceiling and installation of the countertops. It was a long process, spanning nearly a year. We’re still working on some trim pieces, so maybe it’s been spanning 2 years!

Anyway, hope you are managing to salvage your sanity during the process. We ate a lot of homemade soups while we were remodeling. I could cook a couple big pots, and we would eat from them for several days, utilizing the microwave and crock pot.

Thanks for the inspiration you send to my inbox.

  67. Congratulations on 2 impressive milestones–5000 followers and 5 years. I follow very few blogs regularly. (Spending time online can use up way, way too much time.) Yours is a favorite. Thanks for all you do and share.

  68. I joined your blog after watching your tutorial “Binding Basics 2.” I had struggled for forever trying to miter that last seam on the binding. Watching the video gave me my AHA moment! Now I struggle no more! I joined your blog to see what else I could learn and see if I have another AHA moment!!

  69. Congratulations on your 5 years blog anniversary. I’ve been blogging (to a tiny audience, but I don’t mind) for 10 years and how those years have passed! I enjoy your blog and look forward to the heart tutorial soon. Best wishes.

  70. Oh my goodness! I could hardly find the end of all the replies to leave mine! Must be about 5000 of them!! I enjoyed your quilt binding method and shared it with my friend who said your explanation was easy for her to follow….yeah! I made a row of your woven hearts for one ladies quilt in our Friday night quilt group…her colors were red and white and she said my row was her fave! Thank you for all you share and teach.

  71. Wow! Five years is a lot of dedication. Thank you for all you share with all of us — your loyal group of followers.

  72. Thanks for doing such a nice job with your blog! It’s nice to read about all the treats that you have for us…

  73. Hi, I do not blog but sure do like to read what others do on theirs. I think this is a lovely give away so thank you even if I do not win. I learn so much reading blogs. Spent the evening arguing with my quilting on a frame. First thread split and broke. Second thread fell off the spool and caught and broke. Have to try a third option tomorrow and see if I can get this UFO finished soon.

  74. Congrats on 5 years! that’s a huge milestone. Your woven heart is to die for! Looking forward for the tutorial! Would love to give it a try. xx

  75. Julie, congrats on your 5 years of blogging. I first “found” you a few years ago when watching “The Quilt Show”, and you had a tip to share. I have been following your blog and video ever since. Your instructions are always clear and your projects are always fun. I am looking forward to your “woven heart” tutorial and already have a project for it. Thanks for all you do to promote the art of quilting.

  76. Congratulations on your staying power and 5 yr blogiversary. It’s good to know that you still enjoy sharing your creativity and blogging about it. Life is too short to stress about much of anything.

Not being one to really organize my quilt projects, I just do what I feel inspired to create. I admired those who do and blog about it. Keep being creative and share your knowledge as long as it feels right for you. The scrappy heart is a winner.

  77. That is a great block. I can’t wait for the tutorial Your blog is always fun to read and I always learn lots of good stuff. Thanks for sharing your talents with us.

  78. Hi Julie,

Congrats on the 5 year history of your blog. I’m honored to be one of your 5,000 followers. I follow a lot of blogs, and I really enjoy yours the most (don’t tell the others, they’ll be jealous). I’ve been following you for almost 3 years. That’s hard to believe, too. Time does fly, doesn’t it! I enjoy your tutorials, and I really appreciate it that you answered a question I had about automatic thread cutters on my machine. Keep up the good work.

    xo Linda

Congrats on 5 years. That’s a real commitment. I have the scrappy project planner, I started keeping better track of my projects last year and I like what Lori put together. Thanks.

  120. Hello – I really enjoy reading your posts – they are very inspirational. A planner seems like a really good way to go. Sometimes I have too many ideas or items I want to make, I almost get mentally exhausted. I have to remember to let go , less is more, make a wish list and then just have fun.

  121. Julie, I love reading your blog and all of the tips and tutorials you offer. I’ve learned everything I know about quilting through reading blogs like yours. I’m looking forward to your pattern for the woven heart. It will be perfect for my love of Valentine’s Day! I am a happy Bloglovin’ follower.

  122. Congratulations on 5 years and over 5,000 followers. Fun seeing what you come up with. Put me in for the mystery box.

  123. Julie it has been a fabulous journey for me with your blog. I look forward to many more years of following you! Congratulations!

  124. Giveaways are fun, but a tutorial means everyone wins. Congratulations on 5000 followers and your upcoming anniversary.

  125. Hi Julie, Congrats on your 5 year anniversary. I have been following your blog thru Bloglovin for a couple of months, and I just love your posts. I am especially interested in the heart block you are working on. Love the tutorials, I am just dipping my feet into quilting, and the tutorials have been very helpful. One block at a time is my motto right now. Thanks for your help. Again, congratulations.

  131. I’m happy to celebrate your milestone with you. I enjoy your blog and all the wisdom you share and really enjoy your positive outlook. It makes enough of an impression that I am often going back to refresh my memory on methods/techniques you’ve shared. Giveaways are fun but I understand if shipping is too expensive outside the US. I follow anyway because there’s always something to take away.

  132. I have enjoyed checking out your website and have found so many helpful tips and techniques in just the short time I have followed you. I even bought a Bernina based on your sewing machine comment in the applique techniques section. Congratulations on all your milestones/mileposts! Regards

  133. Keep up the great blog posts! I may not comment often, but do enjoy being a reader. Your posts provide great ideas and inspiration. LOVE the little heart project you’re working on.

  134. Hi Julie,
Love reading your blog plus I love giveaways. I enter every one I come across when they are quilt related. We are having a very snowy weekend here in Colorado so my time will be devoted to quilting.
I am working on a large throw quilt that is to be gifted to a grand nephew who was born in July. I purchased a kit from Craftsy for this one . It took me a long time to find a pattern and colors that I thought would be appropriate. I am not a cutesy baby quilt type so the hunt was a little more difficult.
Congrats on 5 years of blogging and 5000 readers.
    Thanks again and enjoy.

  135. Congratulations on 5,000 followers!. Thank you for sharing your ideas and tutorials. Looking forward to trying your new one. My sister loves the pillow I made at Christmas from your tutorial.

  136. Your blog is the one that I most look forward to. Your projects inspire me and your tutorials provide me with insightful instruction. Congrats on 5 years!

  137. I love your blog and the Sunday posts are always interesting as well as the tutorials. Thank you for the time. I’m late on my blog post this week so I know the effort it takes. Trying to ramp up my social presence too.

  138. Congratulatios Julie on your 5 years as a blogger. If you are a traditionalist, you get wood, but if you are a modern type of gal, you would get silverware. Neither is that exciting from my point of view, but wood could mean a new piece of furniture for your sewing room. I enjoy following your blog posts and have learned quite a bit at the sam time. Hope you enjoy many more years in your blogging life.

  139. Congratulations on these impressive milestones! I always enjoy your blog, especially your monthly, I think, blog sharing other’s blogs you’ve enjoyed. Your positive outlook is so much appreciated!! Thank you for sharing your creativity and this giveaway 🙂

  140. Congratulations on 5 years of blogging! That’s a lot of talk. I enjoy all of your post and all the sharing you do. Thank you!

  141. Thanks for five wonderful years. I think informative and fun quilting blogs like The Crafty Quilter are the best format for quilters. Now I can’t wait to see the new woven heart tut:)

  142. Congratulations on your milestones, Julie. It has been a pleasure following you. I love your tutorials and just hearing about your projects. Here’s to many more years of success!

  143. Congratulations on five years of blogging. I so enjoy reading your blog, seeing what you are creating, and your tips, blocks, and tutorials. It is one of my favorite ways to relax after a day at work and I appreciate the time and effort you put into your blog for all of us. I love adding to my stash and I bet I’m not alone in looking forward to a package of quilting goodness to arrive at my door (purchased or won). Thanks for the chance to win one of these great prizes.

  144. Thanks for the inspiration and all of the tips. I like to go back to your binding tutorials when I need to refresh my memory about finishing and my bindings always look good, thanks to you!

  145. I only follow a few and only by email, had too many problems trying to use other sources. I do read yours, I just don’t normally comment anywhere.

  147. Thank you, Julie, for all you have shared with us. I have learned so much reading your blog. Congratulations on 5 years of success!

  148. I so enjoy reading your blogs. You give so much helpful info such as the one about rulers. But most of all I like the patterns. I made the poinsettia table topper and put a real plant on it and it’s still out even tho it is Jan 21 because it looks fab!

  149. I love reading a good quilting blog. There seems to be fewer than before. I do not like the ones that have pop up advertising. I skip those.

  150. Congratulations Julie on 5 years of blogging. I look forward to your blogs and now I am impressed that you reply to comments at all with 5000 followers. Give yourself a big pat on the back from all of us.

  153. Good morning Julie!
I love all your tips and techniques. I tell everyone about your binding tips and techniques-especially that 1/4″ space you leave between the two tails of your binding and how to join them.
It works every time for me! I work in a vacuum/sewing machibe store here in Sarnia, ontario and tell everbody about your videos on youtube.
Wishing you a wonderful, creative 2017!
Hope to win the USP BOX-love surprises!
    Cathy Cloutier

  154. Julie, I love your tutorials, and that you pay it forward, and I especially love videos you’ve mad, such as those featured on The Quilt Show. You’re very generous with your talents and knowledge, and it is much appreciated!

  155. I look forward to your blog postings especially the ones that highlight interesting websites. You clearly live up to my favorite motto of “Practice random acts of kindness and senseless acts of beauty.” Congratulations!

  156. Hello Julie, congratulation on your 5 years, I just started recently to write about my quilting passion I have for about three years. I really enjoy and find useful your blog tutorials and tips. All the best!

  157. Just a short note to let you know I appreciate your blog. Your tutorials are always very clear and easy to follow. I like the way you do things. Thanks for sharing with us. I also enjoy your videos and watch them. Congratulations on your 5 year blog. I am 80 years young and did not start quilting until 5 or 6 years ago. I come from a sewing family so knew how to sew a straight seam but it has been a great journey and I love the creative process of quilting and making totes and placemats, etc. etc.

  158. I really enjoy your blog, Julie, thank you so much for your generosity, your wonderful tutorials, ideas and sharing your quilting life. Congratulations on 5 years of blogging, and thank you for the chance to win!

  164. Congratulations for your blog and thank you for all the work and passion you put on it!!! You’re always a font of inspiration !!!! Dany

  165. Congratulations on the 5 years. I am only one year into blogging, with on and off the previous year, and would live to be able to reach such a milestone in the future. I always look up to people that have succeeded in this field, you are all an inspiration to small bloggers like me. Keep up the good work and looking forward to reading more of your posts! Thank you for this opportunity to win! ♡ have an amazing day!

  166. Wow! It’s been five years? Congratulations! Now, I almost never come to your blog itself, as I get an email. Do those statistics show anywhere?

  167. Hi Julie,
Love your blog and will be eagerly waiting for your Woven Heart!!!!!!!!!
    Happy Anniversary too!!!!!!!

  168. Hi Julie, I love your Woven Heart Pattern and look forward to the tutorial. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us all. Warm Regards from Western Australia.

  169. I’m really new to the site, but what I saw today, the woven heart block, I will not be a stranger to this site. Looking forward to more

  170. Looking forward to the woven hearts tutorial. I should be putting fabric into your box to give away to someone!

  171. I’ve enjoyed following you for about two years now. Thanks for all your wonderful tutorials, pictures, etc. You inspire me! I look forward to the new tutorial. It is adorable. 🙂

  172. Greetings from New Mexico! Congratulations on 5 years and thank you for the information you share with all of us.

  173. Congrats on 5 yrs of blogging. I am so glad I found you and look forward to new projects. Here’s to 5 more yrs of blogging and making new friends.

  174. Congrats on the 5 years and the 5000 followers! About giveaways… I get excited about them. I don’t depend upon winning, but I love quilt giveaways because sometimes I have won. Most of the time, I turn around and gift or donate the winnings. Unfortunately I am one of those people who have far more fabric, books, thread, tools, and even patterns than I can possibly use in what is left of my life. So it only makes sense to make others happy too.

  175. I’m so excited for what you have in store this year. I really enjoy your blog. Am looking forward to the braided heart tutorial.

  176. Hi! I love reading you blog and I pick up many new tips from you. I’m also thrilled that you share so many facets of your life with us. Not only do we get the sewing and project tips but your delicious recipes as well. Thank you for sharing so much great information with us. <3

  177. I love reading your blog. It’s especially nice on Sundays to see you recommending others. Thank you so much for sharing your love of quilting.

  178. So happy to have found your blog. I enjoy quilting and look for places that will give me inspiration. I began receiving emails re your blog last fall and enjoyed all of the holiday ideas that you sent out this year. Looking forward to what the spring and summer will bring.

  179. Love the blog and have been following for sometime now. It is always nice to have updates about the family, especially Amelia. Your tutorials and tips have been most helpful.

  180. Thank you for everything that you share with us. I have followed you for awhile and hope you will be blogging for a long time to come.

  181. I am so glad that I started reading your blog but I’m not even sure how long ago I did join. You are such an inspiration. You have some wonderful tutorials, you make beautiful quilts and cards and I am so grateful that I can follow through with some of my projects with your information.

I mainly make jewelry and sell it but I also like to quilt once in a while. I have made some runners and a quilt for my grand daughter. I actually finished her quilt and had it written on the 2016 UFO Challenge in February, but was so excited that I got it finished that I mailed it off to her and forgot to take pictures of it to post.

I really like the planners. I have used quite a few of them in the past when I was a Circulation Director at a publishing company. It helped me to stay on top of things. Now that I am much older, (retired) and have time, I have my hands into a lot of things. But I still like to give myself goals.

The woven heart picture is so nice. I can’t wait to see how it turns out.

Continue to do what you are doing. You’ve touched so many people. God Bless you and your family.

  182. Congratulations on 5 years and 5000 followers. Obviously we love what you do. The woven heart is one of my most favorite blocks have never made. You inspire me to give it a go. Thanks!

  188. Congratulations on your 5 year/5,000 milestone! I enjoy learning your new tips and ideas for quilts. Thanks!

  189. Your blog is my favorite. So so many craft ideas, tutorials, and sharing your Sew Thankful Sunday’s gives new ideas- blogs -that some of us would not have had the time to seek on our own. You are personable in sharing your family with us -even opening up your home with a home improvement task! I look forward to your posts and look forward to the next project because I know it will be wonderful!! And I can’t wait. ideas are overwhelming as I enjoy making – creating for myself and others… i may not be able to do everything this year but there is always next year ! Thanks for taking the time to create and share !

  190. Wow. Congratulations on 5 yrs Julie! I always love to see an email announcing you have a new blog post because you always have such interesting blocks or quilts that may teach me something new I didn’t know. Or in the case of this new block you’re working on now for us; something I’ve been afraid to try as of yet. It appears in looking at that block that I’ll be forced to do curves if I want to make one. And I do like that block already.

I’ll have my fingers crossed to get a box of scraps if I am lucky enough to win.
Thank you for the chance, and in advance for the block you’re working on for all of us.

  191. I appreciate all your tutorials I have learned a lot from your generosity. Congratulations on your anniversary. Looking forward to another year of learning from you.

  192. Congrats on your five years, a big accomplishment! I enjoy reading your posts and appreciate the ideas you share. Please don’t enter my in th giveaways – I have a planner and am drowning in stash and tools right now. @susansquiltstudio

  200. Thank you! I always appreciate your blog posts, and have especially enjoyed your beautiful Splendid Sampler pictures, love the colours and how you set the picture up so beautifully. It’s a true inspiration to a very new, inexperienced quilter, to see what’s possible, after gaining more experience of course.

  201. Well, I love giveaways even though I know it’s a game of chance. I enjoy your blog even more. Thank you!

  206. Congratulations on 5 years and 5,000 email followers!! I honestly don’t know how you find the time to keep up with everything! I can hardly get to my email everyday, let alone get in some sewing and reading and..oh yea – the dreaded c word – cleaning!!!. Thanks so much for the wonderful giveaway – I love surprises!!! 😉 😉 And thanks for delightful blogging and tutorials

  207. Love the heart! I’m making a heart wall hanging for my granddaughter, might have to hold off finishing it so I can put this heart on it too……Congratulations on 5 years! that’s a great deal of writing!

  212. Love your blog! I really appreciate the links you provide for projects as well as the projects and tips from you. Your applique tutorials were really helpful!

  213. Hi Julie!

This is a voice from your not too distant past. I lived in Sunnyvale for 32 years before we moved to Washington State in 2015, after the fire in our house, and Robert retiring. I was at The Granary a lot; sometimes with Joanna, taking classes, joining in in the assisted sewing hours, etc. I miss everyone so much! There is a very nice shop up here called, of all things, “Quilting Bee”; the name is almost the same as The Quilting Bee in Sunnyvale. I hope I have as much fun at this Quilting Bee as I did at The Granary. Please say hi to Paula and all of the Ladies for me.

I love your Blog and look forward to each new one. Your Blog has inspired me to get back into quilting again, as well as to explore other blogs. What a talented group of folks out there in quilting land. You are all a big inspiration to me too.

    Take Care, Gail Jones

  214. Congratulations on sticking to blogging for so long. I really enjoy seeing the linked projects you find!

  220. You are such an upbeat person, it’s always so nice to read your blog. I seldom leave a comment as you are sew busy and I wouldn’t expect a reply. Just know how much people enjoy your enthusiasm and ideas. i look forward to the Valentine block! Keep up the good work and especially the happy personality! and congratulations on 5 years. Such an accomplishment!

  223. I’m going to miss the block of month with you; but then I just can’t reup either. I’ve always intended to go back to your Christmas every month ideas and do them. That was such a great idea – do things ahead of time. Maybe this is the year. I feel like I should work on Seasonal items at least 11 months early if I ever want them done. So I’d better look up you Christmas ideas now.

  224. I would absolutely love a chance at the Mystery box! My 13 year old daughter and i have just started sewing and would really like to get in to quilting.

  247. Congratulations on five years! I always enjoy reading your post, your quilting talent is inspirational to me. As is your commitment to sharing information with others. Thanks for what you do!

  248. Congratulations…5 years and counting. When I read about the tutorial you are working on and saw the heart block you had created, I had a flashback, and remembered my students doing paper weaving of Swedish hearts in different combination of colors, pink & red or white & red, or white & pink,….etc. Loved it and the students used their paper hearts and created special cards to give to someone in their family. Thanks for sharing.

  249. I also love teaching others and sharing my knowledge. Some of that knowledge is gleaned from many blogs and websites. Learning possibilities are everywhere. I also believe that we learn as we teach, so keep on perfecting our craft.

  250. Congratulations on 5 years of blogging. Your Nordic mini quilt was my first project and I have just finished the 365 Challenge – you created a quilting fanatic!
