February Favorites

February favorites?  Yes!  I’m starting a new monthly series of some of my favorite things.   This could be anything such as a new fabric collection, a recipe, book, tip, etc.  (Don’t worry, this is not going to replace Sew Thankful Sundays.)

February Favorites

I’m crushing on this Summertime Moda Mix fat quarter bundle from Fat Quarter Shop.  I love the mix of cherry red, peachy coral and apple green with the black prints.  It’s got me dreaming of long summer days and maybe a table runner or some napkins out of those fun prints!

I’ve recently added an Instant Pot to my temporary kitchen arrangement.  As you may know, we’re remodeling our kitchen and I’ve still been trying to cook dinner three or four times a week.  I’ve relied heavily on my mom’s old crockpot, but Mr. Crafty Quilter accidentally dropped (and shattered) it in the bathtub after he finished cleaning it.  (He’s a good man for cleaning up after dinner, but he hasn’t told my mom yet that he broke her crockpot.)

Enter the Instant Pot, a modern replacement for the crockpot, rice cooker, pressure cooker, vegetable steamer and more.  Yes, it does all of those things and the clean up is easy!  I made split pea soup last week and it was ready in 45 minutes.  I made steel cut oatmeal yesterday and it was wonderful!  I’m excited to try more recipes, which there are plenty of on Pinterest.

I was thrilled to see the release of this book, Charm School, 18 Quilts from 5″ Squares by Vanessa Goertzen of Lella Boutique.  One of my favorite types of precuts is the 5″ charm square and you can be sure I have a few in my stash.  I “pet” them every once in a while, but I think it’s time I started creating something with them.  There are so many cute patterns in this book, and I love Vanessa’s sense of style and color!

I’ve made this Roasted Beet and Kale salad twice in the past week and it is SO good!  It’s an easy recipe especially when you buy pre-cut and washed kale and pre-cooked beets.  This great recipe comes from Kristen at The Endless Meal and there are so many delicious recipes there waiting to be made!  This is another good find from Pinterest – it’s my number one place to search for recipes.

I had a wonderful experience recently shopping on Etsy at The Red Hen Shop.  Melody has a great selection of fabrics, and I received my package in two days.  She included a nice note and a little extra piece of fabric with my order.  It all started with a sweet comment from Melody on one of my blog posts which brought me over to her Etsy shop.  I ended up with some sweet fabric in return!

I hope you enjoyed a few of my random favorites this month!  Let me know in the comments if you’ve found anything worth shouting about recently.  We’d all love to hear!

  1. The instant pot definitely sounds like a great idea especially for student like me! Don’t have to worry about meals after class when I can prep my meal before hand. 😀

  2. I made a beautiful Easter basket for my favorite, sweet, and FIRST grandson. 🙂 and embroidered his name-how special! I had also made 5 other Easter baskets and 2 mini quilts that will placed in a table top quilt stand. I’m excited to be ahead which will reduce stress later… Love your fabric and i know you will make many more wonderful projects with your new book. It sounds like roughing it is going well…thanks for the update and will look forward SewThankful this Sunday 🙂

  3. Aren’t the joys of remodeling fun!!!! This, too, shall pass even tho it seems never ending. There wasn’t any Instapot when we did our kitchen remodel way back way just my electric frying pan with a tv table as my counter. In the end it was so worth all the inconvenience even if at some points you ask yourself why did I do this??? *face palm*!! I checked out The Etsy shop…fun fabrics but you will always be at the top of my list. So enjoy, your blog, projects and all else you share. Can’t wait to see the new kitchen.

  4. Try the slow cooker recipe I found on Pinterest called “Healthy Slow Cooker Pasta E Fagioli Soup” it’s an Olive Garden copy-cat. You can also find it at “lifemadesweeter.com” , that is when you replace your slow cooker! It’s delicious!

  5. I love that book! I can’t wait to make Madame Butterfly and Chandelier–not sure which one will be first. I will check out The Red Hen Shop. Thank you!

  6. Julie, I always enjoy reading your posts! I jumped on the Instant Pot bandwagon two years ago and have enjoyed the learning process of pressure cooking.
Thank you for sharing so generously. ❤️

  7. Hi Julie,
I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate everything you share with us. I really had a wonderful time with the heart tablerunner and the LOVE mini quilts. I love everything hearts. I couldn’t quilt for over a year due to a sickness, but I am on the road to recovery. I truly get excited every time I see an e-mail from you. In fact, I have gone through all the months since February 2012. Thanks again for everything. Sincerely, Kay

  8. Hi Julie. Love the recipe pics. You are going to love your Instant Pot. I have had mine for a year now and everyone in my family has bought one as well and love it. My daughter just made yogurt in hers over the weekend and than made a berry compote to go with it. Excellent. Hard boiled eggs are magic to peel. I think it is a real time saver for all of us quilters, don’t you? Lots of hugs your way….Claudia

  9. Julie, really am enjoying the new series. Like you, I do like charm squares and the book looks wonderful. You are a trooper dealing with the remodel. Washing dishes in the bathtub is not fun.
Looking forward to the next edition.
