Easter dress and spring

When my girls were little, I would make them a new Easter dress every year.  Eventually, they got too old cool for Mom’s handmade clothing.  Now I have my granddaughter, Amelia, to sew for and you know she gets a new Easter dress!

The fabric is from the Les Fleur collection by Riley Paper Co. for Cotton & Steel.  I found these vintage buttons in my collection that look like real mother of pearl.  They are perfect for this sweet dress.

The pattern is from the book Boutique Casual for Boys & Girls by Sue Kim.  Every pattern in this book has that timeless appeal.  I love it!

Since Amelia is so far away, I don’t have the luxury of measuring her little body for a perfect fit.  I guessed at 18 months for this pattern and it was close.  She has time to grow into it.

There hasn’t been much quilting going on lately.  I’ve been busy teaching classes, but more importantly, we are finished with our remodel.  I’m still trying to figure out where to put everything, only so that I can change my mind the very next day!  And I’m finding myself in the most unusual places – underneath the house even – to get our cable TV up and running!

I took some pictures of our yard because Spring has really sprung in Silicon Valley.  The rains have been good to us and the flowers are blooming everywhere.  I’ve got a beautiful lilac bush in full bloom and my favorite fragrance of all is the orange blossom from our orange tree.  Heavenly!

The front yard has Freesia, Forget-me-nots, and Azaleas in full bloom, too.  There is so much color inspiration in nature!

That’s all for now.  I hope you’re having a great day, everyone!

  8. I really love that little dress! I love that line of fabric and particularly that print and color! And the style is just perfect.

  9. Amelia is just too darn cute in your dress! How special. And your yard is beautiful, I love those lilacs. I am getting in the mood where I don’t know what to do first, work in the yard, do stuff in the house or sew, but first I have to clean up my sewing room before I start another project. This lovely weather makes me want to be outside, however today it is windy the the San Joaquin Valley. Remodel / how EXCITING, enjoy!

  10. Your grand daughter’s dress is so pretty! How lucky she is to have a Gramma that sews! I also enjoyed all your flowers! I live in WA state and we are just getting daffodils blooms. But Spring is coming!

  11. Julie, your lilacs are beautiful! I live in San Jose too and never dreamed I could have them here. I’m inspired! And your granddaughter’s dress is adorable!

  12. The dress is adorable. When my son was small I made him a red blazer. He looked so grown up in his blazer and black bow tie. Also love your flowers. Unfortunately I don’t have a green thumb, and the squirrels won’t let things get past the bud stage.

  13. I loved seeing this dress you made for your granddaughter. So sweet! Boy! does this bring back good memories of the dresses I made my girls for many past Easters. Funny how you forget that stuff sometimes. Seeing this, made me miss sewing those dresses. I loved seeing your granddaughter wearing the dress. She’ll grow into it in no time. Pretty dress.

  14. Amelia is darling. I did the same thing when I made the Great Granddaughters first dress from me. The good part is that was last year and they can still wear the dresses.
    Love the spring pictures.

  15. Beautiful dress and beautiful granddaughter! She is growing so fast, seems the last pic I saw, she was in your arms!! I know how hard it is to sew when they are so far away. Mine are really all to big to sew for now and I really miss that. I always sewed summer clothes for my daughter and just loved it.. However they are only 3 hours away now and hopefully they will be there for several more years. Have a great day!!

  16. love the fabric you chose for her dress. This brings back memories of my dresses that my mother had made me. She even smocked the bodice of the dress and with my black patent MaryJane shoes and laced trim socks, wow what memories. My 93 yr old mother was living with me and has just passed away so this picture of a handmade dress really hit home for me. You are so talented Julie. Spring has forgotten to come to Boston this year. We are having a very cold March here but looking at your beautiful plants I know it will be here sometime. After all, baseball season starts Monday and there might even be some snow on the ground.

  17. The dress you made for your granddaughter is so sweet. I made dresses for my two girls every year but have not been able to keep up with making them for my granddaughters. Flowers are just beginning to bud out here. I am looking forward to really seeing spring and not gray skies and rain.

  18. That dress is absolutely darling! You picked the perfect fabrics for it. Spring is springing in Oregon but not at the rate you are seeing in California. My daphne is in full bloom which is making me very happy!
