I Love Home BOM final month and giveaway!

This is the final month of Jacquelynne Steves’ I Love Home BOM (block of the month).  I have been honored to be a participant again this year.  Make sure to visit Jacquelynne’s blog for her final wrap up post, and keep reading here to find out about this month’s giveaway (now closed).

I Love Home BOM

Since I’ve made each month’s block into a seasonal mini quilt, I don’t have a final quilt to show you.  However, I DO have a video with some tips on how to add borders (correctly) to a quilt.  It’s so important to measure your quilt top and cut your border strips to that measurement before adding them.  We don’t want wavy borders, guys!

Let’s take a look at my four blocks: Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter.  I love seeing them all together!

I just finished quilting the Summer and Winter quilts.  I still need to put the binding on Winter.  One thing I did with the quilting on both of those was some radiating lines coming from the half rectangles.

I first made some registration marks 1″ apart along the top edge.  Then I drew a line from the center bottom to each mark.  I’m using a Frixion pen which I don’t advise for quilting lines – do as I say, not as I do!  The Frixion pen will leave a “ghost” line after ironing away.  It isn’t visible on my particular piece, but I’ve seen it happen on darker fabrics.

I made some feathers in the other half of the half-rectangles.  These feathers are free hand, and I just figured out how to do them (well) from a video I saw on Instagram.  I can’t remember the name of the person’s feed, which is driving me crazy.  I’ll let you know as soon as it comes to me.

  10. Fall is my favorite time of year although here in New England we have 4 distinct seasons and I love all of them. I live on Cape Cod in Massachusetts and when the fall arrives things quiet down here and all the tourists go home. I enjoy my quaint little New England town even more.

    1. …a quaint New England town…Sounds like HEAVEN to me. I’ve only visited the area but I wish we could have retired there. Autumn has to be just exquisite! And winter snow with Christmas and New Year’s celebrations…Sigh!
To me, all of New England is gorgeous. My sister once lived in Maine and the area was fabulous. Even the summers are nice for the most part. I hate summer heat and here in Pennsylvania summer can be brutal.

  18. I love Fall. By the time it comes around, I’m ready for the cooler temperatures, changing of the leaves and the smell of cinnamon in the air!

  19. My favorite season is Autumn. The colors of the trees and the wild ferns are so beautiful, it is something you want to hang onto for as long as you can before winter comes, and the world is black and white.

  20. My favorite season is summer. So, I love your summer block with the sunflowers. Absolutely gorgeous, with your Winter block coming in second.

  21. I would say my favorite season is summer – probably because I am on vacation? Your blocks are all beautiful. I am torn between your summer (love sunflowers) and your winter (love Christmas and green/red together). Your blocks are all beautiful.

  22. My favorite season is Summer. I live in Iowa – do not like cold at all. I know, crazy. My husband and I just decided to stay in the middle – you see, he wants to live in Alaska and I want to live south – like Arizona or Texas. We were both actually raised in Iowa, for the most part. I have lived in other states but since he is an Iowa boy – would never ask him to leave. We just like to tease each other. Oh my. I never complain about the heat. Love your work. Thank you.

  23. hard to choose because i love all the seasons, but fall probably wins your take on i love home is stupendous! love you quilting, thank for sharing.

  24. I think your Spring and Fall quilts blocks are my favorite. I personally love Springtime with all the new life and all the beautiful flowers, etc.

  25. All four blocks are beautiful but Summer is my favourite. I’m leaning towards making mini-quilts with mine as well.

  26. I initially thought your winter block should have been in blues – brrrr, cold – but then the red/wht checked curtains make the house so warm and inviting. I luv it.

  27. SPRING IS MY FAVORITE BUT WITH SUMMER A CLOSE SECOND. I ALSO LOVE HOW YOU DID YOUR FOUR BLOCKS SEPARATELY AND REPRESENTING THE SEASONS.

  28. Fall is my favorite season and I love your fall quilt. Great idea to make these as seasons. You do amazing work! Thanks for the giveaway!

  29. I love all four seasons because they all have something special to offer. I love the changes between them. And after seeing your blocks how could I possibly choose just one. They are absolutely gorgeous!!!!

  30. Spring is my favourite season. I love seeing the garden come to life and the birds all singing. All your blocks are beautiful and thank you for showing how you marked your block for quilting.

  31. I love fall!! It’s time to settle back in at home after all the traveling. It’s time to enjoy the weather changing, get ready for the holidays, have a little extra time to sew when the kids get back in school, and it’s time to reflect on another year almost gone. I love it!!

  32. Think that autumn is my favorite after looking at your blocks 🙂 Love the bright fall colors. Truly admire your quilting and how you turned the four blocks into seasonal homes.

  33. Hi Julie, It’s so difficult to pick just one because I love them all but if I had to choose, it would be your Autumn block. I just love the colors. If I don’t talk to you before then (via email of course) I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas.

  34. Fall is my favorite season for decorating my home! However, I love spring because of the newness and promise.

  35. Fall is my favorite season in Texas because it means an end to the heat and humidity we have to endure here! I love your blocks with the radiating lines!

  36. I am fortunate to live where I can enjoy all seasons. Our winter is the longest season but I do love the sparkling snow and the wonderful heat from our woodstove.

  37. You work is beautiful, thanks for the inspiration.
I love living where there is a definitive change of seasons (Pennsylvania) and I’ll probably get boo-ed for this but my favorite season is winter. I love the snow and cold days when we can spend an evening in front of the fireplace with some wine and a good movie. I’m a February baby, so maybe that’s why. Autumn is my second favorite (LOVE the crisp air and the colors), followed by spring then summer in that order.

  38. I love autumn… mostly for the food 🙂 I’m a turkey/pumpkin pie junkie and in the fall no one looks at me like I’ve lost my mind when I cook turkey after turkey after turkey. Well, not much, at least!

  39. My granddaughter asked me what is my favorite season, and I said “Christmas”. She replied, “Mimi, Christmas isn’t a season!” LOL I’d like to think it is.

    1. With respect to your (I’m sure ADORABLE) granddaughter, Chrstmas IS a season; please keep thinking of it as that. For me as a Christian it starts with Advent and goes until January 6th. Don’t know about you, but it bothers me much that stores begin their Christmas sales before Halloween sometimes and as soon as we hit Dec. 26th, everything just disappears. It’s sad.
      OK, I’ll get off the soapbox. I’m old and sometimes cranky ;- }
Blessings to you and your granddaughter!

  40. I love Spring when I can get back into my garden and play in the dirt. It always a pleasure to see the first daffodils bloom. Thanks for sharing your wonderful quilt. grinnie1961 at gmail dot com

  41. Fall is my favorite season. :Your seasonal blocks are beautiful. I am doing the blocks as mini quilts also. I like to work on small projects as I know I will finish them.

  42. My favorite season is fall. I love color and the leaves are just beautiful. Great job on the quilts as well as the quilting!

  43. I love all seasons – and living quite a bit south of my origins, I miss snow something awful!!! Your quilting excites me – someday I hope to do so much more.

  44. My favorite season is Fall and I happen to love your Fall block! That being said, I also love your Winter, Spring and Summer block!! Lol!! They are all so pretty!!

  45. They are all lovely but my favourite is spring. The colours are bright and cheery like spring. Thanks for the quilting tips as well. The most difficult for me.

  46. Your winter block is my favorite, maybe because we are all preparing for the Christmas season. I especially love the way you quilted each one of your blocks.

  47. hi Julie
thanks for sharing your beautiful blocks with us! my favourite season is summer…lots of salads and fruit
and the scent of flowers everywhere!

  48. Summer is my favourite season. I love the long warm days and all the beautiful trees and flowers. As for your blocks, they’re all gorgeous!

  49. Hello Julie,

Now after reading through your blog, I had to answer your question. “Summer” is my favourite of all of your seasonal home quilts. But I must admit it is then followed straight after by winter’s home and the rest, because I actually love them all!

For me “Summers home” is filled with a wonderful blend of colours and textures that help that stunning home sit high on that hill and actually helps makes your home quilt sing! Along with the delightful quilting of small motif rings and feathers, my heart is filled to it’s brim with so much quilted inspiration and desire to make repeat what you have done! Thank you for sharing your favourite seasons to us/me.

  50. Spring is my favorite! After a long, cold winter in Iowa, seeing the robins return and the last snow pile melt in spring is the best! It’s time to open the windows and sing for joy! duchick at mchsi dot com

  51. I’d have to say I love the time between summer and fall…leaning towards fall. I love the fall flowers, the end of the season’s flowering plants, etc. i do love the sunflowers in your summer quilt.

  52. Asking us which is our favorite of your seasonal blocks is a bit like asking us to choose who is our favorite child! Crafty Quilter fans love all of them! If I had to choose just one, I’ll pick Winter because it gets me in the Christmas spirit. Thank you for all of your wonderful posts.

  53. Fall is my favorite time. I feel as though I “come alive” during the cooling off period. In my “neck of the woods” we have very high temperatures during the Summer so Fall is a relief. I feel more creative during this time. Love all four of your blocks and I appreciate your comments on the quilting as I am trying to be more creative with my quilting. Thank you Julie.

    1. That’s how I feel about fall (and winter for me) but I’ve never managed to find the perfect way to express it – you found those perfect words. “Come alive” is EXACTLY how I feel about it too. The summer humidity is hard on me. I have allergies and I’m very heat-intolerant. 15 minutes outside working in the summer and I turn into a limp dishrag. But in fall and winter I can go for hours! There’s something exhilarating about cool weather.

  54. My favourite season is late spring/early summer when lots of flowers are blooming and the trees have that fresh green look.

  55. Spring is such a welcome season after the long, cold winter. I love getting the gardens ready and planting new plants and seeds.

Your quilting on these minis is fantastic.

  56. My favorite season is fall but my favorite mini quilt is the Winter one. Just looks so warm and inviting. Thanks for the giveaway. I wish i had read this yesterday as I was quilting a table topper and I think your pattern and directions would have been a big help!

  57. I can’t decide which of your blocks i like best because they are all beautiful. My fave season is winter…because i live in Phoenix az…it’s finally a break from the heat!!

  58. Hands down, fall is my favorite season. Life quotes down after the flurry of summer yard / garden work and it’s not the flurry of holiday activities for most of fall. No bugs, gorgeous days. Love your fall block too, but honestly, I think you “nailed” all of them. Just lovely, so well thought out and made.

  59. Hands down-fall is my favorite season! Most years my husband and I even make our way East from New Mexico to see the colors and enjoy the harvest season.

  60. Fall is my favorite season. Living in the midwest, fall means the lovely colors the trees produce. Truly beautiful.

  61. Very pretty, thanks for sharing and the giveaways! Spring is my favorite seaseon, winter is over, the colors and scents begin to pop, winter is over…

  62. I love winter. It is a time where you can sit inside and work on all of the wonderful quilts and other gifts for those you love. Then there’s the parties. Eggnog, New Year’s Eve toasts and sitting by the fire. What’s not to love?

  63. Fall is my favorite Season. There is nothing to compare the beauty of the leaves inall their glorious colors.
    Marion

  64. Beautiful blocks Julie and I love them displayed on the ladder! Your quilting is so neat, I’ve used Frixon pens and haven’t had any problems with them. Winter has become my favorite season as I can just stay in my quilt room and……quilt!

  65. My favourite season is fall–in general, and in your quilt blocks! Fall is a winding down, a cozying-up time. The pace of Spring and Summer have slowed down, and I just love it! By the way, your quilt blocks are gorgeous!

  66. Hello Julie; Every one of your blocks are gorgeous! Your skills in quilt making are magnificent and result in such magnificent projects, I always enjoy looking at what you have accomplished and are sharing. I am going to choose Summer as my favorite in this group of fantastic seasonal hangings. There are so many reasons, yet, I will only say that the star design bordering the house block is the first thing that caught my attention when looking at all of the beautiful blocks. Next, the specific quilting that you did on that section of the block also just really made me fall in love with you Summer Block! Thank You So Very Much Julie For Sharing Your Talents With Us! Plus, of course, the chance at winning the great give away prize! Have a great day!

  67. I love spring. It’s only a few months before summer kicks in, but the fresh rain and flowering trees and plants just make me happy to be alive.

  68. Love your take on the blocks for this QAL! Your quilting is just perfect! Winter is my favorite season living in hot, humid south Mississippi – Winter cold gives us all a break!

  69. I like all of your blocks! They are very pretty! I like spring the best! Have a happy day! angielovesgary2 atgmail dotcom

  70. I love all 4 of the minis but I really like the FALL the most. … it’s warm and cozy looking/feeling. Next would be Summer which is probably my second favorite season of the year. I love the feathers as well.

  71. Hi Julie, The quilting on your Winter mini quilt is lovely. It’s just the right amount of detail and you did an amazing job with the free motion quilting, especially the feathers. I hope you are able to find that video to share with us. You continue to inspire me with your blog. Thanks you so much for continuing to share with us. Fall is my favorite season too, although there isn’t much of one here in the Texas hill country.

  72. All your blocks are so cute….I too am making these houses as seasonal mini-quilts but haven’t gotten too far yet! I can’t determine if your spring or your winter house is my favorite! My favorite season is summer.

Thanks for the close-ups of all your quilting. I am not good at FMQ but you always inspire me to give it another try!

  73. I love the ‘radiating’ quilting … how creative … It looks smashing – but everything you do does. ( awkward grammar, sorry, but you know what I mean )

  74. Spring. Not only for its beauty, but for the weather coming out of winter for me. I have lupus and both winter and summer are both difficult for me as I am hot and cold intolerant and cold just makes me joints hurt. I am not only happiest and healthiest in spring but I get so much more done in the spring as opposed to other seasons and THAT makes me very verrrry happy. Which, makes everyone else happy too 🙂 happy mom is a happy family am I right moms? There can sometimes be no real fall or a very chilly fall where I live so I don’t even consider it. Spring for me!

  75. I really enjoy that you made these blocks to follow the seasons. Fall is my favorite season though a change of seasons is paramount. Thanks for sharing your quilting – maybe one day I’ll feel confident about my quilting designs.

  76. Lovely blocks! About those frixion pens…only use them on stuff you don’t care about. In old weather, those lines will return:-/

  77. I am a summer kind of gal! I love warmth and really don’t even mind heat. I like to look out of the window at winter, but that is as close as I like to get to the cold weather. And I really can’t pick a favorite of your four blocks! They are all lovely!

  78. All of your piecing, quilting, actually everything you do is so beautiful! Thank you for sharing with us.
    Joann Head

  79. Spring is my favorite season. Nature is coming up all anew. Trees budding, flower bulbs sprouting upward and birds singing and nesting. And new quilting ideas sprouting.

  80. My favorite season of the year is summer. Your summer quilt block with its sunflowers and warmth exhibits exactly how I feel

  81. I love all your blocks! And i love all the seasons, spring when everything is starting to bloom and grow, summer for the long days and beautiful gardens, fall for the changing colors and winter for the snow (6” this morning).

  82. Your quilts are adorable. Thanks for all your tips. Each season has it’s own special uniqueness, but I do love spring when new life begins again in nature and warmth returns…

  83. I love the winter block, but I think fall is my favorite season. The colors and the cool crisp air. Our lives slow down and we can relax more! Love the blog.

  84. I love the summer one. It was easy to do and turned out like I am an expert. very cool. Fall is my favorite season.

  85. Spring/summer are my favorite. All the new green in spring and warmth of summer does my old bones good. Plus I am just not enjoying winter any more, too much snow to shovel!!

  86. Your 4 seasonal blocks look great. Thanks for the info on how you quilted them. I am torn between summer and fall as my favourite seasons – summer because I like heat, and fall because I LOVE Halloween. So, I guess it is fall. 🙂 Thanks for the chance to win.

  87. I would have to say that Winter is my favorite season! Love the snow, smiles on everyone’s faces, and the sharing that goes on during this celebration of the birth of Jesus. (Also, my only daughter was born in December).
Your little Winter house is simply adorable too.
    [email protected]

  88. Fall is my favorite season, but I really love your Winter block. The tree is just great! I really love your quilting motifs…I look forward to seeing a future post if you remember where you learned those feathers!
