Gloaming fabric blog hop and giveaway!

Hey everyone!  I am so happy to be participating in the Gloaming Fabric Blog Hop at Sew in Love {with fabric}.  This new fabric line was designed by Shelley Cavanna for Contempo Studio Fabrics by Benartex, and it is just SO dreamy!  You can see the entire line of fabric here.  There’s also a fantastic giveaway at the end of this post!

Gloaming Fabric Blog Hop

I was thrilled when Shelley of Cora’s Quilts asked me to be a part of this blog hop.  I have always been a fan of Shelley’s pattern designs and now she has added fabric design to her list of accomplishments.  The rich color palette and beautiful floral elements of this fabric line are just gorgeous.  I had so much fun working with it!

I named this quilt Diamond Twilight.  It measures 45″ x 60″.  I really wanted to make something that showcased the fabric well, and so I came up with this staggered diamond design.  I used EQ8 to draft the quilt design, and I loved it on the computer screen before I even had the fabric in my hands!  The blocks are large”ish” (5″ x 10″) and easy to make using the Diamond Rects – Quilting Tool by Studio 180 Design .

The dark blue fabric really sets off the teals and greens so well.  I love this combination of colors along with that awesome border fabric.  I was able to fussy cut the border strips to get a row of the large floral motif on each side of the quilt.

I quilted this myself and had my first experience using a quilting ruler on my domestic sewing machine.  It was a learning experience for sure, but by the end I felt fairly competent.  Just don’t pay attention to the size of my stitches – they’re all over the place!

I quilted a large flower motif in the center of the green diamonds.  It adds a delicate touch to the more tailored look of the straight lines.

The backing fabric is a “new to me” plush called Soft Textures Fireside from Moda.  It was easy to work with and it feels very soft and luxurious.  You can really see the stitching detail on the back, too.

Another first was the use of Hobbs Tuscany cotton/wool blend batting.  Let’s just say, I’m in love.   It has a little extra loft, a luxurious feel and drape, and is lighter in weight than 100% cotton.

And then I fell in love all over again when I added the binding!  I love scrappy bindings, and I used all of my leftovers to make the binding for this quilt.  I’m usually working with a deadline, so I’ve been binding my quilts entirely by machine.  I’ll work on a tutorial for that sometime soon.

  6. Hi Julie, love your quilt, and beautifully quilted too! Just a little question…when quilting inside the individual motifs, is It any easier to use the ruler than the presser foot as a guide?

    1. Hi Edith,
When doing free motion quilting, it’s easier to use a ruler as a guide because it makes my stitching perfectly straight. Otherwise, I’m a little bit wobbly! I can go a little faster, too, because I’m not concentrating on keeping the foot 1/4″ away from the seam.
