Best blog posts of 2018

The end of 2018 is a few days away, so I thought it would be fun to participate in The Best of 2018 hosted by Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs.  I’m the type of person that always looks forward; rarely backwards.  This was a great nudge for me to take a look at the past year and see what my best blog posts were; what worked and what didn’t.

How does one pick the best five blog posts of the year?  I went with the most number of page views which is a fairly concrete way of doing it.  No guessing and no personal favorites, just numbers.  So let’s start with #5 and work our way to #1.

5. Sew Many Quilt Blocks!

It was a nice surprise to see that you appreciate seeing what I’m working on.  I’m a sucker for block-of-the-month programs, so this blog post showed all of the different blocks I made during one month – yikes!

4.  My Best Tips for All Machine Binding

I love adding the binding to my quilts, especially when it’s quickly done by machine.  It signifies the end of a project and I get to start a new one!  This blog post gives you lots of tips to add binding to your quilt entirely by machine.

3.  Summer Fun Quilt Along Part 1

I really enjoyed doing this free quilt along with many of you.  It was a six-part series of tutorials to make a small”ish” wall hanging perfect for the summer.  I know you’ve asked for a quilt for each season – that has yet to be determined!

2.  How to Fix & Prevent Flipped Seam Allowances

Based on the response to this blog post, this is a common problem among quilters.  It’s an easy fix and you’ll find some good piecing tips here, too.

1. My Bleeding Quilt and How I fixed it

My top blog post for the year is one that had a happy ending but it was almost a heart breaker.   It’s obvious that we all dread having a fabric bleed, but I found a great solution that works.  If you’ve ever had this happen to you, it’s not the end of the world!

It has been a great year for me, and I thank you all for following along.  I really look forward to 2019 and creating new content for The Crafty Quilter.  I have some tutorials in mind and I’m definitely going to host a UFO challenge every month.  Many of you are in the same boat as me with too many unfinished projects and unopened kits taking up space in both mental and physical space.  I’ll have a new sewing room in a few months (which will be so nice) and I’ll share ideas on organization and storage as I go along.

Thank you to Cheryl at Meadow Mist Designs for hosting the Best of 2018 Linky Party!  You should definitely check out the other participating blogs and check out Cheryl’s blog for lots of modern quilting inspiration.

Have a wonderful and safe New Year!

  1. Hi Julie. I so enjoyed the Summer QAL that I designed my own Winter Row Quilt and just finished the flimsy. I had a lot of fun making this and have an idea how I want to quilt it. Not quite sure when I’ll be able to quilt it though!!

  2. I am currently working on a basket block quilt that has quite a bit of red. The blocks were prewashed but when I ironed them, the red bled through to the ironing board cover. Not that it is the end of the world, but I am hoping there won’t be any more bleed, or I will have to employ the Dawn method.

  3. Thanks you for sharing all your craftiness! 🙂 I enjoy absolutely EVERYTHING! and after reading this post (and i’m behind) i need to quilt my SUMMER quilt. I guess I will be putting that on the to do list.

  6. Julie – this is just one of the many great tips you have for us quilters. I think you should write a book with all of your great tips and instructions. I know it would be a best seller in the quilting world! Thanks again for the binding tutorial. Pictures are invaluable. Happy New Year to you and your family!!!

  7. All those blog entries were terrific – and I can see why they were the most visited. I love reviewing the year and planning the next. You never know what is going to be an unexpected surprise in blogland!

  8. I love all your posts! I don’t even want to think of choosing just one! I do follow your machine binding tut(a good one!) And I read both Suzy and your Bleeding quilt post, so have filed it for when it happens to me…you know it will!

  9. End of 2018 thank you for the “bleeding” problem solutions. There are many piecing, pressing, applique, and other suggestions out in internet land, but yours is the only reasonable directions I’ve encountered. Advice to pre-wash (which I do now) sometimes comes too late.
