Joyful Jelly Roll Tree Skirt

The Fat Quarter Shop is celebrating their top 10 videos from 2015 by showcasing one video for each of 10 days.  They’ve asked some bloggers and designers to participate and today is my turn with the Joyful Jelly Roll Tree Skirt!

This project was really fun and quick to make.  I love how it turned out!

Kimberly does a great job of showing you how to make this tree skirt and she has some great tips for working with bias edges.  I was so glad that I watched the video before I started making the tree skirt.

You’ll also need the Joyful Jelly Roll Tree Skirt Pattern which can be purchased at the Fat Quarter Shop.  As the name suggests, it requires one jelly roll (plus background fabric) to make.  I chose Holly’s Tree Farm by Sweetwater for Moda Fabrics for my tree skirt.  I quilted it with a serpentine stitch (on my Bernina), evenly spaced apart.  It was quick to quilt with just a little marking for the spacing of the lines.  I love the texture it adds!

I used leftover strips from the jelly roll to make the binding, except for the center circle.  I cut bias strips from a coordinating print and added the circular binding last.  It also serves as ties around the middle.  I stay-stitched around the circle and then clipped the curves before adding the binding.  I started by stitching the binding to the back side of the tree skirt and then wrapped it around to the front.  Then I stitched it in place by machine, close to the edge.  Here’s a quick look at that process:

I hate to throw away scraps, and I had enough leftover pieces to make a table runner too.  That’s a tree skirt (plus binding) and a table runner from one jelly roll!

Now I can say that I’m really ahead of the game for next Christmas!

  1. I have to say, you did such a beautiful job that I am bookmarking to do mine when time allow. Love your table runner too! Your photography is delightful, wish I had your skills. Love you explanation on the center.

  2. I am quilting that project now. It is really turning out cute…highly recommend. When I make it again, though, I am going to adjust my strip lengths for the 11 1/2″ sq so I don’t use up quite so much fabric.
