April UFO link up

It’s time to share our finished projects for April.  I hope you’re still motivated and getting those old UFO’s out of the way so something newer and better can take their place! (The link up will be at the end of this post.)

Hello 2016, Goodbye UFO's

I’ll start the ball rolling with my finished quilt, Super-sized Stars.  This went from four 18″ star blocks to a fun, picnic-sized quilt ready for summer.

I had it machine quilted by Carol Dockery at The Granary.  She did a great job as usual!  I used up my star scraps from the blocks to make the backing.  I was going for a large log cabin on the back.

I stitched the binding entirely by machine.  When I think about this ahead of time, I like to start by sewing the binding to the back of the quilt and then wrap it around to the front so I can machine stitch it with a straight stitch close to the folded edge.  It looks nice from the front and the back shows a line of stitching next to the binding (which isn’t very noticeable.)  The photo below shows the back of the quilt on top and then it alternates front, back, front so you can see how the binding looks on both sides.  Does that make any sense whatsoever?

I actually added a quilt label to the back, too.  It should be a healthy habit by now, but I always have to force that last step!

Now it’s your turn! If you have a quilt or other sewing project that you finished in April, add a picture of it to the link up.  If you’re having trouble joining the link up, you can check out this tutorial, How to Join a Linky Party, by Alyce of Blossom Heart Quilts.

I will pick two winners from this month’s linky who will each receive a package that contains a handmade necklace by me, a charm pack and a pattern.

  1. Very pretty! I say this every time you have a finish – I love your fabric choices! I still can’t get a nice, neat finish when I try binding entirely by machine. But I kind of like the process of stitching it to the back by hand. Slows me down for a little while! Enjoy your day! XO

  2. Gorgeous! I like your Linnie’s because they show preview pictures and aren’t just a list of links. I’m still sewing my binding on by hand. I just haven’t mastered doing it all by machine well enough, yet. I’ll keep practicing! XO

  3. Your quilt is beautiful!

I’m kind of embarrased because my UFO was only one month’s worth of an old BOM – 3 blocks. Oh well. A slight move forward!

  4. I love the colors of your beautiful Star finish! This is my first linky. Trying to post my first post on a blog but still fumbling. My Pow Wow quilt took about three years. The pattern was from Cluck, Cluck, Sew and Marion McClellan whose blogsite is “My Quilt Diet” did the quilting on her long arm. My first time sending it out but this one was too big for my regular sewing machine. Thank you letting us share! I LOVE the quilting community!

  5. So sorry my picture is blank. I thought I followed the directions. Guess not. I can’t even delete it. The other strange thing is that when I go to view it on my computer it is sideways. Love all the finishes. I hope you can just delete me. I was so excited to finish a project. Thanks

  6. Love the Supersized Stars. I have been working on machine sewing the binding. Good tips.

  7. I still have my Super Sized Stars quilt to get quilted and bound. I like sewing the binding on by hand but I should give it a try by machine. Yours looks great.

  8. Your Over-Sized Stars turned out beautifully …. congratulations on finishing it up, great work & thanks for sharing your tips & projects. By any chance do you know the names of the star blocks that were used? I would like to try doing something similar with large blocks. One I believe is the Carpenters Wheel (also known as Swoon). Beautiful!

  9. what a beauty, wish I could do the binding your way but my stitching would be too wobbly! Mind you i do enjoy hand stitching the binding I find it relaxing though on a large quilt takes forever

  10. Your star quilt came out beautiful and your binding is perfect. I’ve never tried doing binding completely by machine
It think I’ll try it on something small like a placemat. You finishing is always so beautiful & perfect.

  11. I love your super stars quilt! But it is too pretty to put on the ground, even though I like the idea of a picnic quilt. Also love the log cabin back using up scraps from the front.

All your quilts look so beautifully crafted. Your quilts inspire me! Thank you, Julie!

  12. I love seeing everyone’s completed projects! Thank you again for the fun incentives!! The cornerstones you added to your picnic quilt are such a lovely, interesting finish!

  13. Love your finish. I do nearly all my bindings by machine. (sew to the back, flip to the front and topstitch) I figure if it’s machine quilted, it can have machine binding. If I hand quilt something, then I hand bind. I get a lot more projects completed using this theory.

  14. Congrats, Julie. I like the way you extended your blocks and think the cornerstones add so much to the quilt. I’m sooo close to a finish this month but won’t complete it until after the calendar page has flipped. I’m sure it’ll be finished soon and I hope to get a ‘small’ UFO done, too, for May. Can I link two projects for May?

  15. My Aura pattern was for a 36×36 wallhanging but my Marti Michell class challenge was to use templates and make it bigger….lots bigger. I think it’s 74×74. What fun! So,glad I finally, finally finished.

  16. Hi, I found this Tumelo Trail pattern in Bonnie Hunter’s Scraps and Shirttails II book. I had the top pieced last fall and this month I gathered up the top, backing and batting and sent it out for quilting which was done by Tami Levin of Quilted Lemon. I then put the binding on. It is now hanging on our dining room wall. It’s so nice to have a finish and I am curious to see which month is picked tomorrow for our UFO challenge.
