Quilt blocks and spring fever
Happy weekend everyone! I’ve been working on some new quilt blocks, the sun has been shining and I have that Spring fever feeling. Whether it’s the pattern, the fabric, or the weather, they all have me thinking about the lighter days of Spring.
I’m co-teaching a block of the month class at The Granary Quilt Shop using the pattern, Timeless Tradition by Bits N Pieces. The first month’s blocks were made by my co-teacher, Dianne, and I love them so much! The fabrics are from my stash and they really feel like Spring to me. This first one is my favorite.
The blocks are a combination of 12″ and 6″ squares. Each month we’ll make three quilt blocks. I’ve chosen a Spring color palette of various greens, turquoise, grays and taupes. It’s going to be very scrappy. I made a test block of the 12″ square in a totally different color palette; it looks like I jumped right into summer with this one!
I’m almost finished with my latest Ombre Love quilt using a layer cake of Olives Flower Market by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. I’ve wanted to use this fabric for such a long time! I love how it’s turning out.
I want to add a second, larger border of the tan floral print, but I don’t have enough fabric so I put in a cry for help on Instagram. I was lucky enough that someone had some in their stash and she’s sending it to me! Quilters are the nicest people!
I wanted this to be a smaller quilt than the pattern called for, so I left out the sashing and just sewed the blocks together into rows. It’s about 36″ x 54″ without any borders. With two borders it should measure 53″ x 68″. I don’t know what I’m going to do with this quilt, but I’m sure it will {some day} make someone very happy.
The most exciting thing that I’m working on is a new quilt block and tutorial for you guys! I just had to come up with a block that represents a flower since I seem to be in my Spring phase. It’s the cutest little posy and it’s easy peasy. Here’s a sneak peak of the rough draft:
I’m making it into a 6″ block, but I think I’ll give information on other sizes as well. I think a garden full of posies in a rainbow of colors would be wonderful!
How’s your weekend going? Any sunshine in the forecast? The nice thing about clouds and gray, cold days is they make you want to stay inside and sew. I’ll be doing some of that – planting flowers of fabric in my sewing room!

Hi, Julie. I’ve followed you for quite a while and love your projects. I really like your blossom block and am going to add it to my Moda Blockheads 3 folder. Sometimes some of the blocks are too directional so this will be a nice addition. I imagine I’ll use it several times. Thanks again.
I feel like i’ve “checked out” of the quilt world..but this spring pillow pattern makes me happy. IT has been sunny in the past week and will be nice weather all week. I’m getting ready for a new grandbaby–she will be here next month and I’m making a few blankets with flannel. Nothing like i made the first grandbaby….enjoyed reading during my lunch.. the spring table topper i still enjoy from that quilt along a few years ago and I made a similar mini bunny quilt. I hope to this summer make a couple pillows from your heart pattern i had purchased from craftsy a few years ago. Thanks!
Just when I see a block and think, “I love these fabrics and colors.” Then I scroll to see the next block . WOW. All the fabrics and combinations are great. The heart fabrics are just the touch of “Hope” for spring we need.

Olives Flower Market is one of my favorite color combinations ever. I also made a small quilt of the same line and wanted to keep it for myself!
Seeing your Spring Bunny makes me feel really guilty. I have one in pastels that I started “a while back” when I first saw yours. Seemed like a perfect front door Easter design for my apartment. Put it away twice because I misplaced the flowers I had saved for bunny to hold. I might do it this year? So adorable

Your Ombre Love quilt is gorgeous. The color combination is exquisite. And I agree with you, quilters love to share. At least in my experience they do.
No offense to you with respect to spring; but I’m just not ready for it yet. Here in Eastern PA we’ve had hardly any winter! Except for a short-lived dusting, we’ve had no snow at all and the cold & snow are what make me appreciate spring. I’m a cooler weather kind of girl. In the summer I’m always subject to heat exhaustion, even in weather that’s comfortable for others. I love seeing the green grass and pretty gardens, I just can’t stand heat and humidity. I should probably live in Colorado or Montana. Sigh!
I have to agree with you about the winter. As a lifetime New Englander, I feel cheated with all the rain, some sleet only due to fast drop in temperatures, and no blizzard or two in February. I know, be careful what you wish for. I love doing quilting when storms come, now that I am retired
