Week 4 of Simply Stars QAL & my tips

This is the 4th week of the Simply Stars QAL hosted by Fat Quarter Shop. We’re making the Legacy Block this week which is 24 1/2″ square! I love a big block and this one is really fast and easy to make. You can find all of the quilt along details at The Jolly Jabber (Fat Quarter Shop’s blog).

Remember, you’ll need the book, Simply Half Yards by It’s Sew Emma, for complete instructions for each block. The Simply Stars quilt design has been made just for this quilt along. The cutting guide for this week can be found here.

Tips for making the Legacy Block

I have a few tips for you if you’re making this block. I love making flying geese with the four-at-a-time method. I also oversize them so I can trim them down perfectly. I have detailed instructions for two methods for oversized flying geese with cutting charts that you’ll definitely want to bookmark for future reference.

I found an opportunity to do some strip piecing with the (D) rectangles and (J) squares. Instead of cutting individual shapes, I cut strips for each and then stitched them together. Then I cut them into the correct size segments.

I also love using design boards (by Lori Holt). They are so handy to keep your pieces organized and in place. I often carry a loaded design board to and from my cutting table/ironing board/sewing machine. It saves time and prevents many of those “oops” moments. They come in a range of sizes and I have three of them!

My last tip is to play with color in this block. I felt like my block looked too dark because of the dark background fabric I’m using so I auditioned a few other colors for the center unit. I ended up using a yellow floral that was perfect for fussy cutting.

This Legacy Block was so fun to make and came together quickly. I can’t wait to see what the quilt will look like when all of the blocks are put together – next week!

I’m using half yards of fabric from the Nutmeg Collection by Basic Grey for Moda Fabrics. It’s a gorgeous array of warm and spicy prints that look amazing together. I’m using a dark background of Moda Grunge fabric in the color, Marion Berry Pie.

Don’t forget to check out some fellow quilters who are sharing their version of each block. You can follow them for more tips and inspiration!

  1. Lori Holt has a tutorial on youtube to make her project boards, very simple to do, and a bundle of 3 would make a nice gift for a quilter friend.
