16 Christmas gifts to sew

Note: This post has been updated and was republished on December 14, 2024.

Today I have some great ideas for 16 18 Christmas gifts to sew that are quick and easy! It’s that time of year when we need to find a project that we can whip up in a hurry. Now is the perfect time to check out this list of Christmas gifts to sew that are fast and easy.

Christmas Gifts to Sew

I’ve included a variety of Christmas gifts to sew that you can make in an afternoon. Whether you’re a new quilter or hobbyist or you’ve been at this for a long time, you’ll find something here that strikes a chord. I’ve broken the list up into gifts for the kitchen, gifts for kids, gifts for friends and family.

Gifts to sew for the kitchen

  1. This Double Pot Holder with Hand Pockets tutorial at Make It & Love It is perfect for the chef on your gift list. It’s kind of like having two pot holders in one – no more searching for that second potholder!
  1. One of my most popular tutorials is the Cookie Plate Crumb Catcher. This tiny quilt is fun to make and is a great addition to a hostess gift (along with a plate of cookies of course)!

  1. I love working with cork fabric and these Cork Accented Coasters & Mug Rug are great for holiday gift making (and giving). I love a gift that you can make into an ensemble of similar items such as this one. You can add a cute mug, favorite tea or coffee house gift card to make a complete package.
  1. If you have fat quarters (and who doesn’t?) you’ll love this Self Binding Cloth Napkin Tutorial from Crafty For Home. These make great gifts and are very customizable with the right fabric choices.
  1. A microwaveable bowl cozy is something that everyone would love. Here is a free soup bowl cozy pattern from All People Quilt that looks great and this Microwaveable Bowl Potholder tutorial from The Spruce Crafts includes several size options. Most of these start with a 10″ square, a perfect project for a layer cake bundle. Another option is to use the Creative Grid Bowl Cozy Template Set. I used this for mine and it was quick, easy and resulted in four cute bowl cozies! I also used Pellon Wrap n Zap for the batting, which is perfect for the middle layer of these cozies.

Gifts to sew for friends & family

  1. Several years ago, I made an easy flannel scarf using Mammoth Flannel by Robert Kaufman Fabrics. They have a free blanket scarf pattern that looks unbelievably easy. Since I bought six different colors of that flannel, I was able to make scarves for each of my adult children and my husband. Instead of square scarves, mine were long rectangles. Warm and cozy gifts are the best!

  1. Christmas ornaments are always popular gifts to make and these Fabric Christmas Trees from Hook Stitch Sew are ideal for using up bits of fabric scraps. If you’ve been saving those buttons, then you’re all set!

  1. Some gifts you make, you might just want to keep! That’s very true of this Merry and Bright Cushion Cover by Amy Sinibaldi. It’s so very sweet and it’s been on my list for years.
  1. Gnomes are still very popular, so add this Christmas Gnome Free Sewing Pattern to your Christmas sewing list. Caroline at Sew Can She has all of the instructions to make this cute little guy.

Gifts to sew for kids

  1. If you have kids or grandkids, a travel-size pillowcase is a great gift! This tutorial gives you directions for two different size travel pillowcases and it includes instructions to make a coordinating book bag, too.

  1. If you have any children on your gift list, this Easy Reading Pillow Tutorial from Village Bound Quilts is a must make. This pillow has a large pocket sewn into it that is just right for a toddler’s favorite picture book. It’s great for snuggling too!
  1. If your sewing skills are geared more towards garments, you’ll definitely want to make these Sew Pajama Gifts Sets from Melly Sews. Everyone loves new Christmas pajamas and I love how cute these are! I know some grandkids out there who would love these.
  1. If you live in a cold climate, the littles in your life would love these adorable Pocket Hand Warmers. The free tutorial by Amy at Diary of A Quilter walks you through all the steps.
  1. Are you looking for something fast and easy to make? Then check out these Fabric Books Marks at Quilters Candy. Guest designer, Mara, from Quilt in Progress, shares her tutorial to make these cute and fun book marks. Suitable for adults and children alike!

Pouch gifts to sew for all

  1. A great way to package a small gift or just as a gift in itself, is the Fabric Origami Pouch Tutorial that I shared last year. There is a video tutorial that is included with this blog post for the visual learners out there. I can never keep these “in stock”, because I’m always gifting them.

  1. With all of the fabric we quilters accumulate, it makes sense to make some gift bags out of fabric. This Super Easy DIY Gift Bag Tutorial at Apple Green Cottage is quick to make and is a good “green” alternative to paper packaging.
  1. This Reusable Fabric Gift Bag from Charmed by Ashley is great for any occasion, but especially the holidays. She gives several different sizes options which is a real bonus!
  1. If you’re feeling adventurous, you might try this Flat Bottom Zip Pouch Tutorial from Melissa at Polka Dot Chair. She includes a video tutorial, so you can’t go wrong. I’m making each of my grandkids a zipper pouch for Christmas. You can fill them with their favorite small toys!

I hope you’ve enjoyed this inspiration for 18 Christmas gifts to sew! Make sure to start a list and then schedule some sewing time on your calendar. I’m really good at making lists, but finding the time is the hard part. I’m getting my calendar out now! Enjoy!
