Spring Is For The Birds FREE pattern!
I’m so happy to be sharing my latest free pattern, Spring Is For The Birds! This adorable wall hanging measures 24″ square and it’s perfect for welcoming Spring into your home. Who can resist a birdhouse sitting atop a pinwheel?
Spring Is For The Birds FREE pattern
The pattern includes 6 pages of detailed instructions and diagrams. The piecing for this wall hanging is easy enough for a confident beginner. The applique adds a touch of whimsy and cuteness, but if you’re not a fan of applique, just leave it off. It will still be a cute wall hanging!

One thing I love about small quilt projects is how quick they are to make. Because of this, I sometimes allow myself some extra time in the details. For example, I did the applique by hand instead of by machine. I probably didn’t add much time to the process because I can do hand applique while watching TV at night or while traveling.
I used the freezer paper and starch method for the hand applique. I learned this technique a long time ago and it’s one of my “go-to” methods. I’ll have to add this to my list of tutorials to make. I do have a machine applique series that is great for beginners, though!
With small quilts like this, I love to spend a little extra time with free motion quilting. It’s so much easier to free motion quilt (FMQ) a small project, so I put a lot of focus on the quilting. Everything was done free hand (no stencils or rulers). I love to quilt swirls, feathers and pearls. They’re so fun and add great texture.
I know we could all use a little more positivity in our lives. It’s been a tough time for our country with the recent school shooting tragedy in Texas. The job of parents and caregivers just got a lot tougher as we try to explain these events to our children. How can we NOT make changes to our gun laws after this? I pray for change, and I pray for the families and community of Uvalde, Texas.
Thanks for taking the time to visit my blog.

Oh thank you so much for this precious spring is for the birds topper or wall hanging. I loved doing your bunny pattern and actually did the same free motion designs you did. I make a large paper pattern of the deign a
Then pencil in all the neat free motion designs you show and then practice them. Then I begin. I also use my frixion pen to guide myself. Haven’t done the feather one yet. Looks pretty challenging. But I am going to try it. I so appreciate that you gave us this pattern. I try to quilt and sew on a tight budget as I am retired and this makes me very happy to try using all my many scraps and discount fabrics I find.
Thanks so much Julie – looking forward to starting. Still working on my Arrow Stone table runner so need to get that finished as well. So many wonderful projects, So little time!!!
Hope all is well and you are enjoying the spring.

Thank you so much Julie, I love your designs and the great pick me up. I feel so bad for the young people today, their worlds are changing so fast and drastically for them as well. All we can do is pray that things can turn around somehow. You are a sweet person and thanks again.
A much needed bright thought
As this cute little bird and flower reminds us of the colorful wonder of nature and the shelter we can provide in a manmade birdhouse
The horror of the outcome of unnecessary weapons in the wrong hands shows the absence of humanity the care for others
Thank you for sharing your talent and pattern
Your applique and FMQ is beautiful! Nice job Julie. Yes, I hope something will change soon about how guns are managed in our country.
It’s a beautiful pattern and your free motion work is gorgeous. I hope I can come close. And I echo your thoughts about the recent school shooting and the lack of action regarding gun control. How can we do nothing?
thank you
Daughter is really into the birds that flit about her lawn. So, this will likely become a pillow for her patio furniture. \
Lovely post and lovely quilt – I especially love the geometric shapes in the corners. The freezer-paper applique post you linked to was very informative and had some great tips. I’ve been doing some simple hand-sewing lately (yo-yo’s) and find it a relaxing escape – now I’ve added applique to the project queue. So, thank you!
Thanks for the sweet wall hanging!! Your quilting is beautiful; having several close ups is much appreciated!
Julie,
I am so saddened by the two most recent shooting tragedies. I too pray for changes in gun laws. We cannot go on like this. Thank you for bringing a little sunshine with your adorable wall hanging.
I love your little bird quilt. I can’t see well enough to do the needle turn applique, but will definitely give it a go with fusible. Thanks for your generosity.
Thx for the free pattern. And thx for having the courage to state your opinion about gun laws. Our legislatures need to take action now to toughen gun laws.
Absolutely adorable! Thank you very much for the pattern. PattiK
Julie, your free motion quilting is absolutely beautifuul! I am jealous! Sandy
