Interview with Moda fabric designer Linn Warme
I’m so excited to introduce you to Linn Warme, a new fabric designer for Moda Fabrics! Her latest collection, Autumn Forest, is shipping to quilt shops now. Linn is a native of Sweden, and she is a super talented artist. I was able to connect with Linn through email and she kindly offered to do a Q&A interview for the blog. Enjoy getting to know Linn Warme!

Interview with Linn Warme
Q: Tell us about your background and what led you to surface pattern design?
A: I grew up in Västerås, Sweden, and have always loved drawing and making things with my hands. That interest led me to study art, and later Textile Art in Gothenburg. During those years I explored weaving, screen printing, other textile art expressions, but it was when I discovered surface pattern design that everything clicked. I loved that it brought together both creativity and structure, the freedom of drawing combined with the technical craft of building repeats.
Q: How do you describe your style? Has it changed over the years?
A: My style is flowing, botanical, and full of color and detail. It has always been rooted in nature, especially the Swedish landscape and my mother’s garden. Over the years, I think my work has become more creative and fun. In the past, I got stuck in the details but now I try to not get stuck in the little things.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the design process?
A: I love sketching fast in my sketchbook, capturing ideas without overthinking. It keeps the process playful. Later, I refine things digitally, but my favorite moment is when a sketch suddenly comes alive and I can see the potential for a whole pattern.
Q: Where do you get your inspiration?
A: Mostly from Swedish nature and my mother’s flower garden. Her garden is a magical green in the summer, with every flower imaginable. Seasonal shifts here in Sweden give me endless ideas, from delicate spring blooms to autumn forests.

Q: What’s your favorite art medium?
A: I love drawing with markers, it’s such a fun and direct way of working. The colors are bold right away. I can add layers upon layers, and there’s no chance to erase or overthink, which keeps it playful. I enjoy how quickly I can put ideas on paper with them, and sometimes those spontaneous sketches become the starting point for whole patterns.

Q: Tell us about what you’re working on or your latest collection.
A: My latest Autumn Forest collection for Moda Fabrics is filled with warm, earthy colors and motifs like leaves, mushrooms, pinecones, and late-blooming flowers. It captures the calm and richness of Sweden in the fall. My next collection, Floral Fondant (coming 2026), is very different, with bright playful colors and flowing florals that feel light and joyful.

Q: How do you like working with Moda?
A: It’s been wonderful! The quilting world is new to me, and Moda has been supportive from the beginning of our collaboration. Jamie, Megan, Rachel and everyone over at Moda have been so great to work with. They really let me express my creativity and style, and I truly appreciate that. It’s clear to me that they’re passionate about quilting and fabrics, and they have such great respect for the craftsmanship us pattern designers bring to the table.

Q: Have you ever tried quilting or designing a quilt pattern?
A: I haven’t made a quilt myself yet, but I’d love to try someday. I love sewing, but I’m not sure I have the incredible patience quilters seem to have. When I get to sewing I want it to go fast, otherwise I get impatient, and I don’t think that’s a good quality to have when quilting!
Thanks, Linn, for taking the time to answer those questions. Your love of nature and art truly shine through your design work. I can’t wait to see your future fabric collections!

I hope you enjoyed learning about Linn and her journey as a surface pattern designer. I’d love to visit Sweden (and her mother’s backyard) to capture some of the beautiful flora and fauna there. But since I’m limited to what I have on hand, I played with her Autumn Forest fabric in EQ (design software). Below is my soon-to-be-released quilt pattern, Sheridan, using many of the prints in her collection.

I hope you’re inspired to make something beautiful in your creative space. I’m feeling the Autumn vibes, myself, and it might be time to break into some fall-themed fabric. Who knows where it will take me!

Julie, thank you for this interview. You and Mr. Crafty Quilter have to go to Sweden! A beautiful place, welcoming people, and to my amazement, EVERYONE spoke English! I never got a chance to practice the Swedish phrases that I’d practiced.
