A Quilt, A Birthday and a Bit of Serendipity: A meaningful quilt gift for my granddaughter
It’s becoming a family tradition to gift each grandchild a quilt when they turn eight. By this age, they’ve outgrown their baby quilts and are ready for something a little bigger – something that feels more like them. There’s often a new appreciation, too, for a quilt made by Grandma. Clara is my second grandchild to receive a “big-girl quilt,” and we were able to celebrate her eighth birthday together during a recent visit here in California. She went home with a beautiful Rainbow Garden Variety quilt.

I have to admit, though – the quilt itself was a bit of an afterthought. Both the birthday visit and the gift came together somewhat serendipitously. It wasn’t until I was picking up a few last-minute birthday presents that it hit me: Clara needed her big-girl quilt. Her older sister had received hers at eight, so the timing felt just right. There was just one small problem – I hadn’t actually made Clara a quilt yet. Thankfully, I remembered the perfect one waiting in my UFO pile, ready for binding.

Rainbow Garden Variety Quilt
The quilt, Garden Variety, came together during a block-of-the-month class I co-taught in 2023. The pattern was designed by Natalie Crabtree, and my version finishes at 78″ x 78″. I made it entirely from my stash, pulling together a cheerful rainbow colorway that fits perfectly with the garden theme. At the time, I didn’t have a specific plan for the quilt – but as it turns out, it couldn’t be more perfect for Clara, who loves nature, bugs, and flowers.

I’m lucky to have a sister-in-law in the longarm business, so she added the beautiful quilting. After that, it sat in my UFO pile, just waiting for binding. I was so happy to rediscover it when the idea for Clara’s gift came to me. And as a bonus, it became my finished UFO for March – right in line with my goal to complete one each month.

How I added a simple quilt label
Quilts like this one for Clara are special, and they deserve a label to match. Since I was short on time, I used one of my favorite quick methods – a folded corner label added during the binding process.
Here’s how I did it:
- Cut a square of fabric (mine was about 6½” x 6½”)
- Fold it diagonally to create a triangle
- Press well
- Write your message on the front using an archival-safe pen (I used a Micron pen)
- Place the folded triangle in the corner of your quilt before attaching the binding
- Stitch the binding as usual to secure the label in place
It’s a simple detail, but one that lets her know it was a heartfelt gift. Not only does it tell the story of the quilt, it also preserves it as a treasured heirloom for years to come.

Moments like these are why I love quilting so much. It’s never just about the fabric or the stitches – it’s about creating something that holds meaning, memory, and love. Watching Clara receive her big-girl quilt felt like passing along a small piece of that, and continuing a tradition that I hope she’ll always remember.

Memories for always…… I’m sure that Clara will savor her quilt and the memories that go with it from her special Grandma for a lifetime. Such a perfect quilt for a young lady. Love it when a plan works out I’m working on a high school graduation quilt for my granddaughter at the moment. This is #8 of 9. Our “littles” are no longer little!!
Love the big girl quilts! Treasured memories! My great granddaughters, twins will receive their big girl quilts next year at age 10. I had completed them last year before the truck accident, just need to add labels. Quilting is still a challenge using my right arm causes so much pain. Glad I have a stash of UFO’s nearly complete. Love your corner label idea and planning to get those completed this month. Thanks Julie for your continuous support of new ideas! Happy Birthday Clara
Julie,
A beautiful quilt for a beautiful granddaughter!
Parabéns Clara. E a colchão ficou lindíssima.
A beautiful and colorful quilt for your granddaughter! I love the design. And it’s a beautiful tradition to make a big-girl quilt for each granddaughter. For me it’s making love and memories together and remind how precious life is.
What a perfect quilt for your granddaughter! The fact she’s wearing an outfit with butterflies goes to show that it’s with the right person.
Hi Julie. I love the idea of the label. I had been hand embroidered in a corner and it was getting difficult for me. I can take your idea and do them in advance and use them when I am doing the binding. I have 10 grandkids and now the are grown, one married, one engaged and as we go down the line serious partners, I am making quilts as a parting gift from me. turned 80. Will hopefully keep quilting till nothing left in my stash beryl.
What a special gift from your granddaughter’s special grandmother!!! Looks like the perfect gift for an 8-year old!
You’re granddaughter is lucky to have a great quilter for a grandmother!❤️
If you have an embroidery machine. ( or a friend with one) you could embroider a triangular section with your label saying and sew it into the quilt.
Love that quilt Julie and the precious picture of your granddaughter! I also do my labels the same way- many times I will fuse a little bird, flower or something specific to the recipient in the corner of the label- so adorable ! Thank you for your wonderful posts! NW
