Fall inspiration with quilts and more

Cooler temperatures, shorter days and autumn leaves falling from wind swept trees all point to the changing of the season. I love this time of year, and it’s a perfect opportunity to share some Fall inspiration with quilts and more. Get ready to snuggle up with some cozy quilts and decorate your home with Fall accents!

What makes a Fall quilt?

Two things to consider when making a Fall quilt is the fabric and the design. Both of these are key players in a quilt pattern. Let’s first take a look at fabric (my favorite thing).

Fabric is key

Any quilt can be transformed into a specific season with fabric. Color often tells the story better than anything else! A few examples are my Arrow Stone Quilt and Season Reflections. Both of these use the warm colors of Fall to evoke those “pumpkin spice” feelings.

Arrow Stone was originally designed with a very different color palette. I’m particularly fond of this scrappy version I made a few years ago. The Luxe Cuddle backing is such a luxurious addition to this snuggly quilt.

Season Reflections is a free pattern that you can download here. I love the bold, fall colors in this version. It was fun to see what fabric combinations my pattern testers came up with. Christmas is another good option for this one.

I’m loving the current trend of blue and yellow/gold together, too. When I first saw Fig Tree’s Denim and Daisies fabric collection, my heart skipped a beat.

I made a sampler quilt several years ago using this color combination and I just put in on the back of my couch yesterday. This quilt was made during the Moda Stitch Pink Sew Along with Fat Quarter Shop in 2020. I loved every step of making this quilt.

And my dining room table has this easy table runner I made using the Blue Barn fabric collection by Laundry Basket Quilts for Moda. By adding the gold and rust décor accents, it works really well with my fall theme. The pattern is called Snow Goose by Villa Rosa Designs and it’s jelly roll friendly. I made my runner as part of a blog hop that you can read about here.

Quilt design

Another element of a quilt that gives it that Fall look is the design. A quilt made with leaf blocks or has a pumpkin appliqued on top will clearly define itself as a Fall quilt. The fabric doesn’t necessarily take center stage on this one (but it still can).

I designed my Patchwork Pumpkins Wall Hanging specifically to add some Fall decor to my family room. I love the combination of the pumpkin applique and the pieced blocks. This pattern is available in my Etsy Shop here.

Another applique quilt with a Fall theme is this one I made for Jacquelynne Steves’ I Love Home BOM. This little quilt might fall into both the fabric and design category. Both of those elements really give this quilt its seasonal charm.

Pieced blocks can be used to create a story or a theme very effectively. My Falling Leaves Table Runner is a perfect example of that. These leaf blocks float across the top of the runner as if Autumn wind carried them there. You can find the free pattern right here.

A current project on my list is the 2024 Sweater Weather Sampler hosted by Quilt Scouts. There are nine quilt pattern designers that have each designed a block that fit the theme of sweater weather. The blocks are all pieced and I love them all! If only I had more time.

Decorating with quilts for Fall can add so much to your home décor. And these quilts come in a wide range of sizes and functions. I love to use table runners as accents for all of my tables. And then there are mug rugs, pillows, wall hangings and bed quilts. Below are some examples of all those things!

I’ll leave you with a little more Fall inspiration from around my house. I decorate more for this season than I do for Christmas!

  1. Good Morning Julie, Tomorrow morning at 9 something a.m. we will be “Fall.” Hard to believe as we are having our 9th heatwave of the year. Temps today, tomorrow and the beginning of the week will be low 90’s with lots of humidity. Sure doesn’t seem like the anticipated Fall to me, more like UGH!!! Thank you for your Fall inspiration, however. I actually did my Fall transition a couple of weeks ago. I must admit, not my favorite season. Spring is my favorite, the waking up of all that grows along with the soft gorgeous color. I always enjoy your tips and inspiration. I especially enjoy seeing your family photos. Enjoy your Fall and all the coziness that it brings.
