Updated (and free) Nordic Star Table Runner Pattern
I have a new and improved pattern to share with you today! The Nordic Star Table Runner has been one of my most popular free patterns. I recently made it again and thought it was time to update the pattern. I’ve changed the piecing method for the HST’s (half-square triangles) to be more efficient with the 8-at-a-time method. I’ve also added an option to include an accent fabric which gives you more flexibility with fabric and design!

Nordic Star details
The Nordic Star Table Runner measures 15.5″ x 54.5″. The blocks are easy to make and measure 12.5″ unfinished. There is a sashing strip in between each block. The table runner can easily be made shorter or longer by removing or adding a star block. You could also make the borders wider or remove them altogether.
The original table runner has a simple, two-color design that gives it that classic Scandinavian feel. For my latest version, I’ve added an accent color (orange) and a different border fabric. It’s nice to have options, and I love them both!

I made the new table runner with fabric from the Denim & Daisies collection by Fig Tree. This color palette is a nice transition from summer to fall and it fits my home decor perfectly! The background fabric is Glaze (color, Arctic) by Libs Elliott for Andover Fabrics. It’s the perfect blue for this combination. I also love the splash of orange color that really warms up the look.

I quilted this with an orange peel design. I kinda wish I hadn’t, but once I committed it was hard to change directions. I still prefer the straight, parallel lines from my original version. Anywho, I used a stencil to mark the orange peels and then free motion quilted them with King Tut thread (Superior Threads). I had a little issue with getting the tension just right which really drives me nuts. The bobbin thread felt too lose and adjusting the top tension wasn’t enough to counter it. But, it’s finished (which is better than perfect)!

For the backing, I used three fat quarters from Denim & Daisies along with a few leftover strips of the border fabric. I love using what I have, and it definitely works here.

I often use a flanged binding when I want a pop of color or if I don’t have enough of one fabric for a full binding. In this case, I wanted to use the light blue background fabric, but I only had enough for a flange. So, I paired it with a solid navy and voila, a nice finish to the edge. You can find my tutorial for flanged binding with downloadable instructions here.

Julie, this is a beautiful piece! Thank you for your generosity ❤️ I just printed it out and am going to try it in Christmas colors!
Hi Julie.
It’s nice as always hearing from you. I came out of the hospital a few days ago. I had cellulitis
to my leg, I am doing better. Many thanks for the table runner pattern, I love both, but
the blue is my favorite. Hope all is well with you and your family.
Fond regards,
Joy
Beautiful! This is stunning in blues with the touch of orange. Thank you for sharing.
Beautiful in blue. While I am partial to red, I love the blue too!
Beautiful table runner Julie, I can see why it has been so popular!
Thank you!
